Chapter 44: Xiao Liu's filial piety and thoughts of his mother, Xuan Ce asks about the relics again (II) (Page 1/1)
"Master, I don't know where this Buddha burned his body back then, and I'm going to pay homage to it?" Wang Xuance asked the old monk with his hands folded.
The old monk looked at it, it was still early, and after scanning the crowd again, he changed his sadness just now, so he said to them happily: "The place where the Buddha burned his body is on the other side of the river, so there is an old monk to take you to take a look." ”
"That being the case, thank you master," Wang Xuance replied politely.
Crossing a pontoon bridge not far ahead, they crossed the Athondovardy River and came to the other side of the forest. I saw the old monk lead them to a flat stupa in front of it, which was the same size as the ones I had just seen. It has also experienced vicissitudes and weathered by wind and rain.
"Is the yellow-black land in front of this pagoda the place where the Buddha burned himself?" Chen Maocai looked at the gray charcoal that was still mixed with the soil, and asked the old monk.
"Exactly, after the Buddha attained Nirvana, the people and gods were full of compassion, so they decorated the golden coffin with seven treasures, wrapped the body with a thousand layers of fine cloth, and placed a lot of fragrant flowers, set up a lot of vanadium canopies, and the Mora people carried the golden coffin, there was a guide in front of it, and there was an entourage in the back, and after crossing the Atandovardy River, they came here, piled up a lot of incense wood, placed sesame oil, and then set fire to it, and then they set fire to it, and there were two layers of fine cloth that were not burned, one was the one that was close to the body, and the other was the outermost layer, and then they got these many relics." The old monk then explained to the people.
When he heard that the Buddha passed away here, coupled with the last two words of relics highlighted by the old monk, Wang Xuance immediately remembered the last explanation of Empress Wu when he traveled to the five Indias. Therefore, after thinking about it for a while, I asked him for advice: "I have heard that this Venerable Master said that there are eight points of relics, and I dare to ask the master, the more than 84,000 relics of the Buddha back then, but they were all distributed to the nations from here?" ”
"It seems that the envoy also knows a lot about the Buddhist origin of my Tianzhu. Indeed, after the death of the Buddha, he received more than 84,000 relics, and the inscription next to this recorded the matter of these eight relics.
I saw that this stone pillar was one zhang high, and there were many words written in Sanskrit densely on it. Immediately, the old monk explained to them: "At the end of the Buddha's cremation, the kings of eight countries rushed over with their armies. Then they sent a virtuous Brahmin to persuade the Mora people in the kingdom of Nagara at that time: "The Buddha, the god of the world, has passed away in your country, so we have come from afar to ask for a relic to be offered in our country in peace, so that the glory of the Buddha may bathe the people." Although the kings of the countries at that time were very sincere, the Mahoro people said: "The Buddha deigned to come to our remote country, and now that the world's famous teacher has passed away, and all living beings have lost their loving fathers, the Buddha's relics, since we should have them to make offerings, it is impossible for you to give them, I hope you can understand"
When they heard this reply, the kings of the eight kingdoms personally intervened and pleaded with the Mora people at that time, hoping to grant their request, but the Mora people still sternly refused. So, after receiving no answer, the kings of the eight nations, after this consultation, then told the people of Mora in a solemn and solemn manner: Since you do not agree to the courtesy, then we can only use force. ”
At this critical juncture, the venerable Brahmin once again entered the city and persuaded the Manas: "Think about it, when the Buddha was alive, he was a man of great compassion. And how many years have you experienced, compared to what you have heard. Now to bring you Mora people into the endless flames of war, it really shouldn't be, every relic has this supreme spiritual power, one is enough, why bother to keep all these more than 80,000 as your own, I propose, it is better to divide this relic into eight parts, and each country to enshrine it, so that the Dharma will be transmitted to all parts of my five heavenly zhu, isn't it exactly what the Buddha yearns for?
So, in the face of such a situation, after weighing it again and again, it was for the sake of all the living beings in the whole world, so he obeyed their request and divided the Buddha's true body relics into eight parts, and offered them to each of them.
Later, on this day, the Emperor said to the kings: "There should also be a share in the heavenly realm, please don't force us to rely on force to fight." Later, the dragon king of Anabattata, the dragon king of Wenlin, also said: "Please don't leave us out, if you really want to rely on force, you are not our opponents" Faced with such a quarrel, the Brahmin man of high virtue said directly: Don't quarrel, you should divide it equally.
So they all sat down on the ground. The relics left by the Buddha were first divided equally into three parts, one for the gods, one for the dragon kings, and the other for the earth, and then divided equally among the eight nations.
When they received this supreme treasure, the gods, the dragon kings, and the kings of all nations were all sad and grieving. From then on, the endless war that was about to be caused ended in peace......"
Hearing what the old monk said, Wang Xuance immediately returned: "Think about the three supreme relics left by this Buddha. The Buddha's tooth relics are now safely enshrined in my Tang Dynasty, but unfortunately it is the Buddha's parietal bone relics, and the Buddha's finger relics are now missing, I wonder if the master knows his whereabouts? ”
Because he has been in contact for so long, through so many conversations, the old monk also feels that Wang Xuance and others are not like bad people, not to mention that he sees this relic thing relatively lightly, because what he pursues is the quiet in his heart. Therefore, he replied indifferently: "The old monk really doesn't know. Twenty years ago, on top of this uncovered assembly, I heard that these three supreme treasures were still safely enshrined, but I never thought that today two of them were lost, alas......"
"It's not a secret, the Buddha's tooth relics back then were given by Master Jiexian, and now they are shining in my Tang Dynasty; I came to worship the Buddha this time, it is to pay homage to the Buddha's finger relics and the Buddha's top bone relics, but unfortunately these two treasures are now no longer in the previous place of worship, so I am also quite sorry," Wang Xuance said with some worries......
"When the Dharma has never been dusty, even if it withers in one place, it will definitely flourish in another place, and the same is true of this Buddha's true body relic, since he has temporarily disappeared in my five Indias, I think he will definitely secretly go to the place where the Dharma flourishes, so please don't mind Wang Changshi" The old monk still said to them politely.
Hearing these words, although Wang Xuance didn't ask what he wanted to know, he was relieved a lot after all......
