Chapter Ninety-Three: Flying Shear Galen Ship

PS: Regarding the detailed mode of the Flying Shear Galen ship, in addition to reading this chapter, you can also go to "Divine Favor Spain" to watch, it's the same. As for why the author wrote here, the first one is to count the words and make up the chapters. The second is that after all, there are two books, and the product of my book still needs to be specifically introduced, although it is almost the same. As for the author's conscience, back then (and this year) I was sorry to see the eunuch book "Divine Favor Spain", so I wanted to create a big duck empire. So I'm embarrassed to borrow from anyone's author, but there is nothing wrong with borrowing this book, and there is a feeling that the original is born from the same root......

……

When the salted cod in Newfoundland is ready, it is shipped back on a distant-water fishing boat.

This morning, three sea vessels suddenly appeared not far from the coastline.

Sailors and fishermen on the coastline or on the coastal sea, some of them noticed the problems with the three boats......

It's so fast!

That's right, this is Ferdinand's gospel to the pioneers of the New World: the Flying Shear Galen Ship!

The main item on board these three ships was salt. The salt used to marinate cod. After a few days, they will be able to bring back the marinated cod.

The Flying Shear Galen was created by Ferdinand in his quest to strengthen the connection between the New World and the Spanish mainland, and to increase the speed and safety of shipping in Iberia and the rest of the world.

In the Atlantic, there will be a large number of cod, cane sugar, salt, spices, gold, silver and copper, saltpeter, coal and iron and other materials to and fro in the future.

The speed of material transportation needs to be improved, but safety needs to be ensured urgently.

In one of the novels Ferdinand read, as well as in real history, the Spanish fleet was sacked by the British and Dutch pirate ships. Even if Ferdinand succeeded in seeking Flemish dominance in the future, it would only be to remove the Dutch, and the possible pirate ships of the British were a big problem.

Especially when Ferdinand learned about the historical connection between Spain and Flanders, he felt even worse, if he succeeded in seeking Flanders, then the sea connection was very important, and it was always very unreliable to borrow the Shinra......

So Ferdinand had been strengthening his navy against the British and French navies and pirates. Fortunately, the French sea power is very bad, otherwise the French are robbing and disrupting the shipping routes in the English Channel every day, and the trouble will be even greater.

Equipped with 18-pounder British Koflin cannons, the "Hongyi Cannon", the Galen ships have been greatly developed, and the tonnage has ranged from medium Galen ships of 500~600 tons to large Galen ships of 800~1000 tons, and has been incorporated into the powerful Mediterranean fleet.

After dealing with the French, the Mediterranean fleet stopped playing in the bathtub and ran to the Atlantic to rob the French.

What the? Why are you still fighting? Hehe, it's still early for the war to end! It's going to be more than a year old, but I haven't written it yet.

As for the more shabby Castilian Atlantic Fleet, Ferdinand assisted a group of Galen ships armed with merchant ships, but they were all small and medium-sized, and they were early versions, and their speed was not much higher than the existing sailing ships of the same class, ahem...... His heart can be punished! If it's not for the defense of the wife, then the directivity is obvious!

……

According to some later sources and relevant historical novels read by Ferdinand, by the second half of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century, the Galen ship had a maximum speed of 10 knots, while the pirate clipper had a maximum speed of about 12 knots.

Of course, the Galen ship armed with powerful guns or the Galen warship can bombard the opponent to slag, but the pirate ship is not to rob the Galen warship or the armed merchant fleet, but to rob the Galen ship that is similar to the lone salt ship, and it is the weakly armed Galen ship, which is a weak and deceitful ship.

It's hard to get rid of or retaliate against pirates, but you can't catch up with them.

For example, he ordered the production of a batch of clippers early on, cruising around Sardinia and the Balearic Islands and the east coast of Iberia, acting as a coast guard, fighting smuggling and espionage, and beware of the ill-intentioned presence of North African pirates, the French navy, and the Turkish fleet.

The pinnacle of clippers, the Casatik is an iron-ribbed wood-hulled clipper built at a cost of £16,150 and is 85.34 metres long and 10.97 metres wide. The empty load is 963 tons, the full load is 2133.7 tons, and the draft is 6.1 meters at full load. It can load 1,700 tons and 1,534 tons of cargo. Crew 28-35 people. Ferdinand kept a complete set of design drawings in his collection. From London to Guangzhou, the ship takes about 100 days. The highest recorded speed is 17.5 knots, which is equivalent to 32.4 kilometers per hour, and the longest range in 24 hours is 672 kilometers, which translates to about 15 knots, which is equivalent to 28 kilometers per hour!

……

This type of ship has a small freeboard, less superstructure, the length to width ratio of the ship is greater than 6:1, and the underwater shape is designed as the least drag body, but also maintains a certain lateral drag profile, using a curved scissor type head post to cut the waves to reduce wave resistance - this is also the origin of the name clipping boat. At the same time, the capacity of the sail has been expanded.

More importantly, the hollow bow technology of the clipper ship, the sealed hollow compartment makes it easy for the boat to raise its head in the waves, improves the course stability in the waves, and reduces the resistance.

On this basis, Ferdinand introduced the technique of stabilizer fins, which were initially just a few pairs of shark fin-like planks on the bottom of the boat, and then provided drawings for the craftsmen to study the more complex structure of the special stabilizer fins. At the same time, work was done to raise and enlarge the mast and jib, but this required the right wood, such as Bermuda cypress.

In addition, there was not enough shipbuilders in Valencia, Barcelona and other places to provide enough craftsmen to build ships, and there were not enough people in Sicily and Naples, so Ferdinand recruited a total of 8,000 shipbuilders from England, Scotland, Flanders, North Germany and other places to support his shipbuilding business.

In addition, Ferdinand built a new shipyard on the shores of Lake Cabras in Sardinia to increase secrecy.

Although the stability of the clipper ship is improved by the stabilizer fin technology, it is difficult for a pure clipper ship to install a broadside gun, let alone the Hongyi cannon.

Ferdinand decided to use the 500~600 ton medium Galen ship as the base, with a reduced width, a streamlined bottom and a hollow bow. Retrofitting of stabilizer fins (preliminary studies of the shape and structure have been completed). In addition, it is necessary to adopt the advanced iron rib wood shell structure of later generations. This is the Clipper Galen boat, which is a product that combines the characteristics of both the clipper and the Galen boat.

The preset Flying Shear Galen ship has three shapes.

(1) "Standard Balanced" 500-ton flying shear Galen ship, with a maximum speed of 14 knots. The loading capacity of the guns of the ships on the side was 24 (6 less).

Small and medium-sized auxiliary warships and ocean-going cargo and personnel transport vessels (mostly used for less cost-conscious operations). It is the best choice for killing people and goods, immigrating and colonizing, transporting troops, and fighting piracy.

(2) The "low-speed improved "500-ton flying shear Galen" ship, the width of the ship is not reduced, or a small amount is reduced, and the characteristics of the Galen ship are retained. On this basis, the hollow bow was added, the underwater sharp shape of the ship, the fin was reduced, and the sail area was increased. The cargo volume is larger, the artillery equipment is 22~24 guns, and the speed is 12.5 knots.

The Atlantic and Mediterranean regions are suitable for merchant marine options. It is an excellent tool for business exchanges, unimpeded trade, large transactions, and capital profits.

(3) "Flying shear optimized type", which can no longer be regarded as a hybrid type, but only adds modern swept stabilizer fins to the iron-ribbed wood-hulled flying clipper, which is an improved version of the flying clipper. The stability of such clippers is increased, maintaining a maximum speed of 15~17.5 knots, and the speed of ocean going is more than three times that of the Galen ship. It takes a little more than 100 days for a clipper to travel from London to Guangzhou, and a year for the Galen ship. Therefore, clippers are ideally suited for such ultra-long voyages to the Far East. But the loading volume is small, and it cannot be equipped with self-defense naval guns. Luckily, the speed was so fast that the pirate ship couldn't reach it.

Suitable ships for Far East trade, and Chilean Australia and New Zealand colonization. It is a famous car in Akiyama that raced on the sea, trafficked spices, imported silk tea, and teased pirates...... Boat.

In addition to the three "Standard Balance" Clipper Galen ships that have already been sent to Newfoundland for practical testing, Ferdinand will order 20 of each of the three hybrid vessels next year, which will travel from Iberia and Sardinia to North America, the Caribbean, Brazil and even Chile.
