Chapter 101: Weapons (4)

The M24 grenades are usually stored in metal boxes, each containing fifteen grenades, as for why it is singular, because there is space for the fuse box of the grenade.

As mentioned above, the fuse and body of the German grenade are separated from the body during transportation, which can ensure the safety of transportation, because the TNT charge will only be detonated by using a detonator, and it will only burn slowly even if it encounters an open flame, which is why it is called a "safety explosive".

Only before the battle did the Germans install a fuse on the grenades and distribute them to the soldiers who needed them, but when ammunition was tight on the front line, grenades were only available to veterans, as they were better equipped with the weapon than the rookies.

Some later data show that the throwing distance of a handleless grenade is farther than that of a handle, and some data show the exact opposite, in fact, to put it bluntly, it is very simple, and the weight of light things is thrown farther than the proportion. The total weight of the US military's MKII grenade is exactly 595 grams and the weight of the M24 is exactly the same, and the distance between the two is about the same, but looking at the charge of the two, the German M24 charge is 170 grams, but the MKII is only 65 grams, and the difference between the two is more than twice as much.

MKII is a defensive grenade, the killing mechanism is different from the M24, in fact, the two should not be compared together, here is to illustrate a point, that is, in the case of the same charge, the handle grenade can often be thrown farther than the egg grenade because of the special throwing method.

Of course, it also depends on the user's physique and habits, for example, many Americans have learned to play baseball since childhood, so throwing grenades is better than the Germans, on the contrary, they will feel very unaccustomed to throwing German grenades.

The Germans also have a handleless oval grenade, the final designation is M39, which is also an offensive grenade, using a thin steel plate shell pressed in half and up, and the killing range is controlled within five meters like the M24, and the weight is only 340 grams, so the throwing distance is farther than the M24, and because the charge is reduced to 12 grams, the power is also reduced, of course, the enemy soldiers who have been hit by a grenade of this kind may not agree with this point of view.

Xu Jun plans to make a major improvement to the M39 grenade, and he wants to use a mechanical fuse to replace the original fire tube. In this regard, Xu Da has a bunch of designs in his hands to learn from, such as the US military's MKII, Xu Jun found that the M39 equipped with a mechanical fuse and a fuse looks almost exactly the same as the M26 that the US military later equipped, which makes people wonder if there is any connection.

Xu Jun expected that the Germans would face a brutal tug-of-war on the Eastern Front, mainly around various support points and strong defensive lines, so the troops had to be equipped with a large number of defensive grenades.

The production of steel balls or grooved wire nests for the M24 grenade has now been given the highest priority. As for the improved version of the M39, it has been designated as the M40 grenade, which is still made of thin steel stamping, but with a prefabricated fragmentation layer added inside, and each grenade is filled with 150 alloy steel balls with a diameter of two millimeters, which can penetrate a stamped steel plate two millimeters thick within the killing range.

This grenade weighs a hundred grams more than the M39, the charge has not changed, and the soldier can hang it on a belt around his waist, or he can use a special canvas carrying bag, as well as a triplet canvas grenade leg bag, which can be used by paratroopers and mountain troops.

Xu Jun also equipped the German army with a batch of captured grenades, such as the aforementioned Mills grenade, the German army had a good impression of it, especially the safety design, which can interrupt the throwing during combat, you need to do just reinsert the safety bolt, replace it with the German army's own M24 and M39, and then throw it out after pulling the string.

For the time being, these improvements were limited to the grenade, and of course some special ammunition types were also developed, such as the German favorite smoke grenade, which was the most commonly used weapon when attacking platoons, and the German infantry tactics emphasized the role of smoke barriers on the attacker.

After talking about grenades, let's take a look at the German gun grenades, the German army is currently equipped with only two kinds of gun grenades, one is a high-explosive personnel personnel kill projectile, the other is an anti-armor grenade, the former has a charge of about 30 grams, and the latter uses a hollow charge, which can penetrate 50 mm steel plates, and the performance can only be said to be average in the early days of World War II.

The German army's existing rifle grenade launcher, known as SMK (grenade launcher with a crosshair mounted on the muzzle), note that M is capitalized, otherwise it will become a steel core armor-piercing bullet, this launcher is put on the muzzle through the bayonet mount, used to fire personnel and anti-armor grenades, because the German army is currently equipped with a grenade charge of only 30 grams, so the power and range are quite impressive.

What is even more surprising is that the number of SMK grenade launchers distributed to troops is not very large, and the weapon that the German army currently routinely uses to fire grenades is actually a flare gun finalized in 1928.

And because the prototype signal gun is a smoothbore barrel, which is not suitable for firing grenades, the German army also specially added five rifling wires to this gun, in order to distinguish it from the prototype, the gun body is marked with the Z mark, so the German army called this grenade pistol "Z combat pistol".

In France, the performance of this weapon was very mediocre, mainly because the ammunition was too weak, the long-range accuracy was too low, and it often required soldiers to shoot at close range, which was really not as convenient as using grenades.

In fact, the grenade launcher, named Type 42, was not fully equipped with troops until 43, and each combat team could only be assigned one.

To tell the truth, the German army is very uninterested in gun grenades at present, because they were overwhelmed by the performance of the "Z combat pistol" on the French battlefield, and the SMK did not react very well, because after using this launcher to fire a grenade, the residue and flame of the propellant will damage the muzzle of the rifle, so it is very unpopular with German soldiers.

Now that Germany has a new Führer, the embarrassing position of the gun grenade in the German army is about to change. At this time, European countries were more or less equipped with some grenade launchers, which were used to fire special grenades or conventional grenades, and it should be pointed out here that Japan was ahead of the world in similar weapons, and they designed and developed a unique grenadier canister, which surpassed their European counterparts in terms of performance and power.

The British did come up with a grenade projectile like a dog jumping over a wall before the Battle of England, but this was just a crude emergency product, and it was completely different from the Japanese professional grenadier canister.

Xu Jun also considered equipping the German army with grenadiers, but found that there was an overlap with the status of the German army's 50mm mortars, and that mortars with a full set of sights were easier for Xinding to use than grenadiers that required long-term training and experience.

So Xu Da Fuhrer put his eyes back on the grenade launcher, he could directly take out the historical 42 type firing cup system, but His Excellency, who had seen a large number of advanced models in later generations, had long since stopped taking this thing into his eyes.

In the end, after repeated selection, Xu Jun finally determined a grenade launcher that he thought was most suitable for the current German army, that is, the American M79 grenade launcher that made the Vietnamese communist guerrillas bleed all over the ground in the jungle of Vietnam.

Later generations also called it the M79 hand cannon or howitzer, this weapon since the day of its birth, is destined to be covered with blood, until the 21st century, this weapon is still in service in the special forces of the US military, then people found out that this seemingly stupid black weapon, has been fighting for the United States for almost half a century.
