Article 3 of Mexico's first federal constitution, enacted in 1824, clearly states that Mexico's state religion was and will always be Roman Catholic, and that other religions are prohibited from operating in Mexico.

In contrast, Article 1 of the Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits the establishment of a state religion and guarantees religious freedom for the people.
