Chapter 983: The Root of Learning Zen

The Bodhisattva of Wonderful Meaning is here, first teaching us from the eyes, just now we talked about the parable of looking in the mirror. If the eyes look at all hues, they can see that the color is not color, they do not have greed, they do not have longing (anger is from the inside to the outside, and complaining about the heavens and people is all thoughts), and they are not obsessed, then they are extinguished. Tantra has many ways to practice with the realm of vision, and now you enter the realm of non-greed, hatred, and non-naivety. It's not that Tantra is fast, it's that he can use the Promising Method to cultivate. But whether it is achieved or not, it still depends on oneself, not on methods.

You can also take a Buddha statue and look at it in front of you, and after looking at it for a long time, you will definitely not be able to see the hue in front of you, and it will be empty. We talked about the above sentence of the Three Ancestors' "Faith Inscription": "If the eyes are not sleepy, the dreams will be eliminated." If the heart is not different, all laws are the same", using the eyes to see the color, is also a method. Someone asked me, his eyes were ethereal when he stared, can he cultivate like this?

I said, why not? But don't look when you stare at it, because if you do, you'll be blind in no time. It doesn't matter if you open your eyes, but you don't see them, and you don't use the function of your eyes. Otherwise, you will hurt your eyes too much, then I am not responsible, let me make it clear first, you have to open and close your eyes for your own convenience.

The Bodhisattva of Wonderful Meaning teaches us the method of seeing colors with our eyes, and immediately attaining the state of freedom from greed and hatred, without jumping out of the world, and now it is the dojo of silence. Then there are the five roots of the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. The ear is for sound, the nose is for smell, the tongue is for taste, the body is for touch, and consciousness is for thought, all of which are relative. But if you also use the practice of seeing and seeing, you can also be liberated from these five roots.

His conclusion is that "if you know the law and are not greedy, greedy or stupid, your name will be destroyed." Because to sum up, greed, hatred, and ignorance are all psychological behaviors, which are emanating from consciousness.

So, are there any greed and hatred in the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and front of the body?

Some. However, from the perspective of consciousness, the greed, hatred, and ignorance of the first five consciousnesses are helpers, like accomplices, and the main culprit is consciousness. For example, the eyes are also cowardly, and the consciousness hates someone, so the eyes come out to stare at him, and follow the consciousness as an accomplice. If the consciousness likes someone, the eyes will smile and help the consciousness do it. To borrow the language of the law, the accomplice is less guilty and the principal is more serious. Therefore, if the consciousness is not greedy and angry with the external environment, then the first five roots will naturally be unable to be greedy and angry with the external environment, and they will naturally be extinguished.

If you make a mistake, you can't afford to be in the state of mind or another thought, it should be said: the number of the state of mind is up, and it will naturally disappear. This is the only way to enter. This story comes from the "Altar Classic" of the Six Ancestors, Cao Xi in Shaoguan, Lingnan (because Cao Cao's descendants migrated here to settle here, so it is called Cao Xi). Feng Shui is good. Later, the six ancestors said the Dharma here, and the temple of the Dharma was called Nanhua Temple in later generations, and at that time Zen Buddhism had two systems, the north and the south, and it could not be regarded as a faction, but the atmosphere was slightly different.

In the north, of course, it is the senior brother of the six ancestors, the Shenxiu line. Let's not look down on Shenxiu, his influence is greater than that of the Six Ancestors. At that time, the cultural center was in the north, and there were many practicing masters in the north. However, Shenxiu is taking the path of gradual cultivation, which is also the orthodoxy of Zen Buddhism. Don't think that Shenxiu is not orthodox Zen, that would be completely wrong. The great literati of the Tang Dynasty, such as Li Bai and Du Fu, and the Zen of this group of celebrities were all influenced by the Shenxiu branch.

At that time, there was a Wolun Zen master in Shenxiu's line, and when he meditated, the devil often came to grind him and tempt him, but he ignored it and made a poem:

The lying wheel has a trick to break a hundred thoughts

I can't afford to be in the state of mind, and the Bodhi day is getting longer

This is real kung fu! Don't despise him. Many people who studied Zen practiced according to this lineage, which later spread to Lingnan. The rank of the Wolun Zen master is naturally lower than that of the six ancestors, and someone took this side to ask the six ancestors, and the six ancestors said another side:

Huineng has no tricks and constantly thinks about it

How long is it to count the bodhi of the mind

The phrase "how long is Bodhi" is very wonderful, it is a question, how long do you say Bodhi is? One side is also the answer, Bodhi has no growth and no extinction, where can it grow? The Wolun Zen Master's son is the foundation of learning Zen, and it has been done fundamentally, with the realm of the Wolun Zen Master, you will talk about the realm of the six ancestors. Later generations of Zen learners took the chicken feathers of the six ancestors and today's arrows, which are the straw paper that the six ancestors rubbed their buttocks, you don't use it as a hat to wear! He can rub his butt with a hat, but you can't, you still have to start with the method of lying on the wheel.
