Chapter 970: Hearing the Heart is Two

The Bodhisattva said: The bodhisattva's heart and the sound and hearing heart are two. Contemplating the emptiness of the mind is like an illusion, without the mind of a bodhisattva, without the mind of hearing sound, is the only way to enter.

The name of the wonderful arm is to describe that the Dharma has two arms, one is the Hinayana shravaka vehicle and the other is the Mahayana bodhisattva vehicle. The Mahayana path can be born or entered, and the Hinayana path is absolutely born. If the Hinayana path enters the world, it will no longer be Hinayana and will have been transferred to Mahayana.

The transliteration of Mahayana in Sanskrit is Mahayan, Mahayana means great, and later generations will become Maha according to the Pali transliteration, and Mahayana will become Mahaya, which means big cart. (The Chinese translation does not directly translate into a car, but uses the word "ride", which also has the meaning of car, but pays more attention to the meaning of loading, and has the function of transportation.)

If you have a lot of loads, you will turn it into Mahayana, and if you have a narrow state of mind and little opinion, you will turn it into Hinayana. The purpose of both is to get rid of life's troubles and to reach a transcendent world, so it is okay to go by big car or by small car.

Of course, it is easy to take a small car, and some people on the side of the road want to take a ride, because the car is small and cannot be moved, so they have to refuse to take it. But when a bodhisattva in a big car waves, he stops as long as someone on the side of the road beckons, and even if you don't wave, he stops in front of you and invites you to get in the car.

Mahayana are the two arms of the Dharma. Without Hinayana there is no high level of Buddhism. But it's useless to be high and high, it's to be placed on the top of the mountain to enjoy it. The Mahayana Bodhisattva path is not a pure and high one, it can hide dirt and dirt, and contain everything, good and bad, good and evil, and everything can be accommodated.

The bodhisattva mind is based on great compassion, which is the foundation of bodhichitta.

Bodhi is the transliteration of Sanskrit enlightenment, because Chinese enlightenment cannot fully express the meaning of Bodhi, so the transliteration is retained, not translated.

Those who study Buddhism cannot attain enlightenment because they do not develop bodhichitta deeply. After the Mahayana Bodhisattva attains enlightenment, he takes great compassion as the door to love all sentient beings, which is the bodhisattva mind.

The sound of the heart is from the Han, that is, Lao Tzu said, "If you don't see what you want, so that the people's hearts are not chaotic". It is also renunciation, disgusted with everything in the world, and adopting an attitude of not being out of sight and out of mind. Therefore, the sound of hearing is biased towards taking the empty route, hiding in purity, letting go of all fates, and not having a single thought.

In our family, sometimes we get bored, and the Hinayana thoughts arise spontaneously, and we really don't bother to take care of it, and if we don't bother to take care of it, we give up, and we want to hide in the mountains and retreat, and this is the Hinayana mentality. Ordinary people appreciate this mentality very much, and countless poems in the Central Plains praise such a realm, full of Hinayana thought. For example, "close the door and ignore the moon in front of the window, and tell the plum blossoms to open independently", "everyone sweeps the snow in front of the door, and doesn't care about the frost on the tiles of others", "pick chrysanthemums under the east fence, and see Nanshan leisurely". Another example is "The Story of the Peach Blossom Spring" and "The Biography of Mr. Wuliu" and other articles.

Another example is in foreign countries, it is very popular to worship Hanshan and Shide, it is said that one of them is Manjushri, and the other is the incarnation of Fuxian. A poem composed by Hanshan:

My heart is like the autumn moon, and the blue pool is clear and clean

Nothing comparable to Lun taught me how to speak

It is also widely loved by people who study Zen, and if you meditate and use functions to reach this state, it will be amazing. But this realm is the shravaka mind, the Hinayana realm. In the words of Zhuangzi, it is the "spirit of bathing in snow", clean as white paper, without a single speck of dust. We all hope to reach such a state, but even if we do, we still hear the mind, and it is not enough to enter the bodhisattva path.

I heard that there was a Zen master who had attained enlightenment and saw that many people liked the side of Hanshan, so he said to everyone that what this side of the temple expressed was a pure face, which was a matter on the side of the Dharma body, and it was not enough to achieve the perfect retribution and hundreds of billions of incarnations. When others heard this, they were not convinced, so they asked him to talk about his realm. And he said,

My heart is like a lantern lit on fire, red inside and out

There is something comparable to Lun to come to the east of the sunrise

On the surface, this side looks like an anti-cold mountain, and it is a two-way method, but in fact, the lantern and the bright moon are the same. Hanshan is talking about the pure side of the Dharma body, and this Zen master is talking about the side of the Dharma body. There is a Taoist immortal person, he wrote a poem to his disciples before he died, the last sentence is "the heart of the blood is redder than Dan", I read this poem, very admired, this is a person who has attained the Tao should have the heart.

The Bodhisattva of the Wonderful Arm says here that the bodhisattva mind of the Mahayana is the opposite of the Hinayana shravaka mind, which is two. However, regardless of Mahayana and Hinayana, when the mind is moving, looking inward, there is no real thing. As the Diamond Sutra says, "The mind was unattainable in the past, unattainable in the present, and unattainable in the future." There is no distinction between Mahayana and Hinayana and Hinayana in this way, and there is no one way to enter the Dharma.
