One Thousand One Hundred and Forty-Five Locust Control (I)
Confucius was a very smart man.
Judging from his various words and deeds, he is not the kind and kind old man on the painting, who explains the truth of life to you with a pleasant face.
All kinds of records can show that Confucius was very wise, he was very intelligent, he had insight into human nature, and he observed many things very thoroughly, and saw through the essence at a glance.
For example, the state of Lu issued a decree that those who were rescued from other countries and were exiled abroad could go to the government to receive the money spent, and Confucius's disciples did not collect the money after rescuing a person from the state of Lu, and proudly showed off in front of Confucius.
As a result, Confucius was furious.
Do you think everyone is as rich as you are and likes to make a name for themselves? They all care about their own interests! Who wants to do something that has no interests?
If you don't take money, people will praise you, and if someone takes money in the future, others will accuse him, and slowly, will anyone be willing to save the homeless locals?
Confucius's wisdom and insight into human nature can be seen.
Then again, if Confucius hadn't been smart or wise, would he have been able to establish Confucianism in that time of great controversy?
He saw that in the face of natural and man-made disasters, people only knew how to pray but did not know how to find reliable solutions, and only knew passive prayers but did not know how to actively seek solutions, so he sighed deeply.
It's just limited to that era, although Confucius advocated respecting ghosts and gods, focusing on his own subjective beliefs, and not letting ghosts and gods dominate, he still believed in the existence of ghosts and gods.
Then Dong Zhongshu carried it forward for political purposes.
These miscellaneous ideas and the worship of ghosts and gods are also the biggest obstacles to many of the policies that Xiao Ruxun is about to implement, and if China wants to move towards a new life, it must break the superstition and worship of ghosts and gods.
The people must know that everything is created by their hands, and it has nothing to do with the cow ghost snake god, what they have been fighting for is the meteorological disaster caused by climate change, it is nature, not the heavenly punishment caused by man-made evil, and the cow ghost snake god does not exist at all.
These thoughts have a far-reaching legacy, and they must be dismantled, so that the people know that their hands and legs are more reliable than any bull, ghost, snake and god.
Because the locusts could not be destroyed, they actually built a temple to worship the "locust god", trying to move the locust god and not let it eat the crops.
Ridiculous, pathetic.
If you can't solve anything, you will sacrifice the other party to the gods, never look for a solution, and blindly ask God and worship Buddha, this is the evil result.
It is also the importance of dispelling such superstitions.
Locusts are a very headache in all dynasties, and they can't be managed well, so they forced the people to build temples and worship to ask God for blessing.
But the dynasties and dynasties are not tied down, nor do they not find other ways to deal with locusts, they only know sacrifices.
In the Han Dynasty, the government began to pay for the purchase of locusts and let the people organize a fight, and in the Tang Dynasty, Tang Taizong personally took the lead in eating locusts, which led to the custom of eating locusts among the people, and people discovered the edible value and medicinal value of locusts, and tried their best to fight against locusts, but still could not solve it.
Not to mention ancient times, in modern times, when science and technology are so advanced, there is still no good way to eradicate locusts, because their reproductive ability is too strong.
However, although it is not possible to eradicate locusts, it is possible to control locusts by various means to reduce the frequency and frequency of locust plagues.
It's just that no one has summed up a reliable strategy for controlling locusts, and no one has taught the people these methods, and once the locust plague occurs, the people can only watch the locusts rage.
Some people naively think that eating locusts can eradicate the locust plague and feed the victims, so as to solve the problem of locusts.
Locusts eat crops and crops so fast that they can eat all the edible plants in one place for a day or two, and then immediately take off to move on to the next area, how many locusts can people kill in a day or two?
After the grain is eaten, the locusts killed are enough for so many farmers to eat for a few days? Will you be able to eat the next crop?
It is true that locusts are high in protein and rich in nutrition, but they are low in calories and fast in digestion, and they are not enough for the victims to eat for a few days.
Therefore, if we want to deal with the locust plague, spending money on the purchase of locusts and mobilizing the people to eat locusts are all acts of hindsight, and in fact they do not belong to prevention and control, but only to save them, and the salvation is still very limited.
The ancients are not fools, although they are restrained by the induction of heaven and man, but not all of them are waiting to be killed, since the development of printing technology in the Tang and Song dynasties, there are a lot of locust control techniques left on paper, and the ancient books that people are familiar with today are recorded.
However, first, the mobilization power of the state is insufficient, the enforcement power of officials is insufficient, and the understanding of the people is not deep, so it is difficult to form a sufficient force to control locusts and to carry out a thorough sweep of locust growth areas to prevent locust disasters.
So every time the locusts grow wings and start to wreak havoc, people can only sit and wait to die, watching the overwhelming locusts eat up their crops, doing nothing but worshipping the Buddha and shedding tears, and then starving to death one by one.
At the same time as Xiao Ruxun sent people to investigate climate changes, he also sent a considerable number of capable young officials to retrieve books on locust control over the years from the treasury to find out how to control locusts, and to collect the patterns and main places where locusts occur, as well as the main places where locusts are wreaking havoc.
It took a month for the locust control team to come up with the where, when, and how often locust plagues occur.
They concluded that locust plagues tend to occur on a large scale after a major drought, and that the outbreak sites are mostly in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, much more than in the Yangtze River basin and south of the Yangtze River, and that the outbreak time is generally most rampant from May to August, that is, between summer and autumn.
Summer locusts are the most prosperous in the middle of May to early June of the lunar calendar, autumn locusts are the most prosperous in the first and middle of August of the lunar calendar, and the sixth and seventh months of the lunar calendar are the concurrent period of summer and autumn locust plagues.
Locusts don't eat crops, they eat people.
The locust control team further concluded that the distribution of locust plagues was most common in the lower reaches of the Yellow River, especially in the three provinces of Hebei, Shandong, and Henan.
Ancient books record that locusts are affected by drought, so the locust control team believes that locusts need to grow in a relatively arid environment, and places with abundant rainfall and humid climate are not suitable for locust growth, so the Yellow River basin has been plagued by locusts after each drought.
Ancient books also record that locusts grow from larvae to locusts in the soil, and then from locusts to locusts, so the locust control team believes that locusts should lay their eggs in the soil to grow, like drought, winter and spring do not grow and summer and autumn grow, so they like warmth.
In other words, if there is a severe drought in one area, there is a good chance that there will be a locust plague the following year, where the locusts will grow, eat the crops first, and then move to other places.
