Chapter 379: A Journey to the Garden (I)

On October 13, 40, which happened to be a Sunday, the Berlin Zoo now holds several animal shows every Sunday, attracting a large number of Berliners and their families.

This is Germany's largest and oldest zoo. This sprawling park was a gift from King Wilhelm IV of Prussia to the people of Berlin, and in the following years the most famous German designers left their masterpieces here, and for a time became the focus of the entire empire.

Located in the southwest corner of the old Berlin district, the park was originally the pheasant farm of the Prussian royal family, supplying the royal kitchen with pheasants and other game birds needed every day.

Even the German railway system has a platform dedicated to it, which will later become known as the Berlin Zoo station.

In the grocery store next to the exit of the train station, John. Gold spent fifteen fennigs on a tourist brochure with the latest version of the city's tour map and an introduction to the famous attractions. Like other Germans who had never been to Berlin, he had been full of anticipation and yearning for the city, and when he actually arrived at the heart of the empire, Gold found that the rumors he had heard were not exaggerated, and that he was not disappointed by the bustling and prosperous capital of the empire.

Gold tucked the travel book into the pocket of his coat and followed the flow of people down the sidewalk in front of the train station toward the south. Originally, the zoo opened a west gate directly opposite the train station, but because people rushed to cross the road and affected normal traffic, it was closed most of the time, and all visitors who wanted to go to the zoo could only take a detour to enter through the north and south main entrances.

Gold went to the south gate, which was closest to the train station, and the strong man from Hertzberg tried to pretend to be a well-informed city dweller, trying to restrain himself from looking around stupidly like a country bun, but when he followed the flow of people up to Hindenburg Street, looking at the bustling streets and the spire of King Wilhelm Memorial Church in the distance, Gold was still dumbfounded.

Hindenburgstrasse is lined with five-storey Baroque, Rococo and Victorian buildings, with an eight-metre-wide pedestrian walkway flanked by a tram lane on each side, and a car lane and sidewalks under buildings.

As he strolled down the sidewalk in the middle of the road towards the Gothic spire of the King William Memorial Church in the distance, he regretted that he had not heeded his friend's advice and went to Mr. Bell, who taught Chinese at the village primary school, to borrow his seventy-percent new Zeiss camera, or else he would have taken a lot of wonderful pictures for the group of friends in the village to see.

Passing through Carl Gustav Square in front of the church, Gold turned onto Budapest Street, and in fact, the south gate of the Berlin Zoo can already be seen at the entrance of the church. In later generations, this exquisite and unique gate was severely damaged, leaving only a part of the base of the main entrance, and the supporting ticket office, information office building and other buildings were completely destroyed under the bombardment of Soviet artillery.

These buildings, which were created by Germany's top architects, have never been rebuilt, so when later generations see this south gate, they will feel that the style is really a bit abrupt.

And now standing in front of this intact south gate, Gold is fascinated by the whole set of buildings full of rich oriental colors, he has never seen such an architectural form, the green tiled roof and arched eaves, everywhere reveals a kind of oriental delicacy and mystery.

The main entrance is a gatehouse with arched eaves, and the base is two stone elephants carved in the oriental style, many tourists think that this imitates the Chinese style, but it is very different from the traditional Chinese architecture, so it is often made fun of by Chinese tourists in later generations, and foreigners have not seen the real Chinese gate.

In fact, they are all mistaken, the style of the south gate of the zoo is not imitated by China, but Japanese architecture, to be exact, imitated by Japanese Tang architecture, which can be seen at a glance from the Japanese castle tower-style roof of the ticket office building and the arched eaves of the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple in Japan, but these supporting buildings were eventually destroyed in the war, and the Germans did not rebuild them as they were in later generations, because it would be reminiscent of the history of the alliance with Japan.

After spending seventy-five pfennig on a ticket, Gold walked around the red fence at the entrance with his head held high and strode into the Berlin Zoo, which he had always longed for.

The tourist brochure has a detailed map of the zoo, and Gold wants to visit the famous Stone Cave Pool and Poseidon Pond before returning to visit the aquarium.

A group of young men in brown SA shirts were arguing around a map by the side of the road, and judging by their armbands, they belonged to the Hitler Youth, and the tall German farmer stretched out his finger to wipe the silver-plated badge of the Agricultural Autonomous Corps on his chest, bypassing the rowdy group of boys, and continuing towards his destination.

After Germany won the war, the enthusiasm of the Germans to participate in the Nazi organizations became more and more intense, especially after the new Führer changed the paranoid and fanatical style of the past, reformulated the rules and regulations that were more moderate and humane than before, and abolished a large number of racially colored provisions, some centrists who had previously held bad views of the Nazis were also attracted and willingly joined those national organizations.

Now that the Nazi Party led by the new Führer is in full swing in Germany, even the most stubborn conservatives in the past are sincerely impressed by the achievements of this Führer, and the change in the style of the Nazi Party has given them hope that Germany will move forward in what they think is good, and the will and consciousness in Germany have been unified to a certain extent.

Hitler's influence on the Germans was slowly disappearing, and although the Germans believed that Germany could not have been revived so quickly without his leadership, the Führer's ideas were too extreme and no longer suited to the needs of the present German society.

What the Germans want now is a peaceful and stable development opportunity, and at the same time feel at ease to taste and digest the fruits of victory in the war, and just after a bloody war that lasted more than a year, Germany also had certain losses, and the people have some war-weariness, so what they need now is to recuperate, and it is really not suitable to toss and turn as carelessly as in the Hitler era.

It is said to be a pond, but in fact, there is an area of more than a dozen acres, a group of ducks and geese are playing happily in the pond, and there are more than a dozen proud swans, bending their long necks with graceful lines, swimming quietly in the shade of the trees by the lake.

With a loaf of bread in his pocket, Gold broke a small piece and began to tease the ducks, which is not normally allowed by the garden, but the sight of Gold's honest appearance of the earthen buns made the keepers of the pond turn their eyes away.
