Chapter 900: Disaster Strikes
Among the many countries in the world, there are not many countries with the potential to be a great power. The United States is undoubtedly blessed with a unique position, and the isolation of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans has ensured the security of the United States at home. Coupled with the fact that there are no major powers in the vicinity, this allows the United States to devote all its strength to foreign expansion. It can be said that it is precisely because of these superior conditions that the United States is called the chosen country. The reason why the American imperialists in another time and space were able to rise can be said to be inseparable from these factors.
India, on the other hand, also has the potential to become a great power. The vast land area, the huge population base, and the surrounding geographical environment are also very favorable. The tall Himalayas to the north held back the enemy. And the surrounding areas, again, there are no strong countries. It's just that, after all, India is sad that they have been in a state of subjugation from ancient times to the present. The nomadic peoples of Central Asia have invaded the south many times, while the local natives of India have not been able to defeat them at all and have been in a state of enslavement. It is precisely because of this that the indigenous people of India have always been at the bottom of the social class. On the contrary, those foreign nationalities have always been at the top of society.
After the Great Voyage began, Western colonists began to invade the whole world. And India, naturally, has become the object of competition and invasion by those colonizers. After a fierce struggle between the Western colonizers, Britain emerged as the victor and took control of all of India. However, this is not a good thing for Indians. At that time, the British Empire was in full swing. Their frenzied plundering of wealth from India further increased the power of the British. The indigenous people of India also tried to resist many times, but they were brutally suppressed by the British. In particular, the great Indian uprising in the mid-18th century, although it caused considerable losses to the British colonial authorities. However, the whole of India was also killed in a river of blood.
Since then, although there have been many uprisings in India. But, in general, a huge part of the Indians have been tamed. They have resigned themselves to their fate and willingly accepted the exploitation and oppression of the British. Of course, at the same time, there were also those feudal princes who rode on their heads.
However, after entering the twentieth century. Indians are also gradually starting to wake up. Gandhi, Tilak, Jinnah, and Nehru were among the people who were active. With the exception of Jinnah, who is a member of the Green Party coalition, the other three are leaders of the Indian National Congress. In order to fight for India to be free from British colonial rule, they led the vast number of Indian people to fight hard. Especially in the world wars, after Britain lost the war, many people thought that their opportunity had come.
It's a pity that even if Britain lost the war, even the mainland fell. However, British rule in India is still extremely powerful. In addition, the vast majority of the people had submitted to the rule of the British, and the feudal princes were also connected with the British colonial authorities. This made it very difficult for other parties, such as the Congress Party, to overthrow British colonial rule.
The Congress Party is the largest party in India with 30 million members. Unfortunately, however, there are also fierce contradictions within the Congress Party. The moderates, led by Gandhi, hoped to break away from British colonial rule through peaceful means. But the radicals, led by Tilak, advocated the overthrow of British colonial rule in extreme ways, including war.
Although, the two factions have different opinions. However, in the end, the purpose is the same. That is to be able to break away from British colonial rule so that India can become a truly independent country.
Mumbai, India, is the largest city in India and the most industrialized city in India. It was also the center of the Congress party.
The Congress headquarters, where radical leader Tilak and moderate leader Gandhi are meeting, are underway. In the office, apart from the two of them, only Gandhi's student Nehru, who was responsible for the record-keeping.
Now Tirak's attitude has regressed from before. He had previously led a general strike of workers in Mumbai, where he was arrested by the British colonial authorities and imprisoned for six years. Perhaps it was because in prison that Tilak realized the power of Britain that his attitude changed. In August 1914, he also pledged allegiance to the British, hoping that in exchange for the British agreeing to India's autonomy, and then moving towards independence. It is precisely because of this that the relationship between the radicals and moderates of the Congress Party has eased.
It's just that it seems to be a little late now. The British had already lost the war, and even the mainland had fallen. The British government can only survive in Canada now, and it is difficult to protect itself, let alone give Indians the opportunity to self-govern or even stand on their own.
Because, more powerful colonizers are coming, and more importantly, soon the whole of India will be plunged into war. I don't know how many people will die in the war, and I don't know how many people will die because of it. It is precisely because of this that those elites in India are worried one by one.
This meeting between Tilak and Gandhi was also mainly for this reason. As leaders of the Indian National Congress, they naturally have an obligation to save India from disaster.
"Mr. Gandhi, India is very dangerous now! The colonial authorities were expanding their armaments, and soon a major war would break out in India. On the Indian peninsula, I am afraid that there will be another river of blood! Tilak's face was full of despair.
"Is there no way to avoid this war?" Gandhi looked compassionate. Although he was very thin, he was almost a god-like existence in the minds of most Indians.
Tilak shook his head: "In the eyes of the Western powers, India has always been a piece of fat, and everyone wants to take a bite. Before, Britain was very strong, and other countries did not have a chance to do it. However, after Britain was defeated by Germany, the Germans simply did not let us go. Their army has already taken Egypt. I'm afraid it won't be long before they enter the Middle East. And after taking the Middle East, won't it be India's turn next? ”
"Is it possible for us to get in touch with the Germans and get them to support our autonomy or independence?" Nehru asked.
"It can't be! The Germans were more greedy than the British. They will never let go of the opportunity to enslave us. Tilak said with great certainty.
