Chapter Ninety-Six: Equipment (II)

Armored vehicles have generators and batteries that can provide electricity for electrical appliances, and heating up quickly is just the easiest means of heating. The Führer also proposed the idea of an electric kettle, which was not the shiny streamlined kitchen appliances of later generations, but a simple handle kettle shape, which was quite suitable for the aesthetic taste of the Germans at this time.

It's just that it takes time to set up a production line, and it is not possible to come up with finished products for the time being, and I believe that it will be very popular not only in the military, but also in the civilian market.

At this time, piped gas was not fully widespread in German cities, and some of the old buildings still used coal-fired stoves, but all buildings were connected to electricity, and citizens would definitely like this clean and fast water boiling tool compared to the foul-smelling exhaust gas emitted by coal-fired stoves.

If it weren't for the fear of early leakage of cavity magnetron technology, Xu Jun would even be ready to make a microwave oven, this kind of heating artifact is too convenient, but it seems that he can only wait for another year or two.

The United States did not get the British cavity magnetron technology as it did in history, and because the British did a good job of secrecy, the Americans did not even know that this technology existed at this time.

The cavity magnetron (resonator magnetron) is the core component of the centimeter-wave radar, and Germany and the United Kingdom are currently cooperating with each other to develop a new generation of mobile radar stations, as well as anti-aircraft and fire control radar systems used on warships.

Of course, these projects are top secret, all participants are under strict surveillance, and the British, well aware of the great value of this technology, have begun to become wary of their relatives on the other side of the Atlantic and will no longer allow their high-end technology to drain to the other side.

The newly developed mobile radar vehicle will be able to maneuver with the troops, and will be able to detect medium- and high-altitude flying objects within a range of 120 kilometers and ultra-low-altitude targets flying at an altitude of 20 meters within a range of 50 kilometers, which basically eliminates the possibility of low-altitude surprise attacks by enemy bombers.

Several of these mobile radar stations can cooperate with various mobile anti-aircraft artillery equipped by the German army to build a complete air defense system and support a solid umbrella for the ground forces.

As for the corresponding anti-aircraft artillery, Xu Jun has already determined several design schemes, and is currently only waiting for Rheinland Steel to develop the universal delivery platform he needs. Rheinland Steel is now conducting comparative tests on several projects, and the most outstanding performance is the tracked chassis improved on the basis of "Fenris".

It is the chassis of the aforementioned reduced version of the Karl 600 mortar, Rheinmetall has installed a new engine on it, replaced it with a new suspension system, increased track width, and made it gain better cross-country ability, and the unloaded chassis once ran the highest speed of 57 kilometers per hour on the test track, FZ170.

The FZ170 served as a universal tracked chassis, on the basis of which it was then converted into various mobile fire platforms. This chassis could easily carry a full 88mm anti-aircraft gun, and there was no German gun that it could not carry, except for the train gun, of course.

Xu Jun needed to improve the versatility of German equipment as much as possible, which was of great significance for both manufacturing and logistical maintenance, and Xu Jun's goal was to ensure that any German self-propelled gun could be damaged and find suitable replacement parts in the nearest repair center.

In the future, the anti-aircraft firepower of the German armored forces will be divided into three layers: short, medium and long-range configurations, short-range anti-aircraft firepower will be dominated by quadruple 20-mm anti-aircraft guns, and medium-range defense will be undertaken by twin 40-mm caliber anti-aircraft guns, and long-range will be handed over to the famous 88-mm anti-aircraft guns.

As for the more powerful anti-aircraft artillery systems, such as the 105 and 128 mm anti-aircraft guns, they are only responsible for the air defense work in the core and critical areas, and they are good at attacking high-altitude targets, while in the field mobile air defense, they often encounter high-speed targets at medium and low altitudes, such as fighter-bombers and ground attack aircraft, these large-caliber anti-aircraft guns are full of power, but they are not suitable for fighting these small flies flying around.

Xu Jun once wanted to install the "Fafnir" on the land combat platform, but then found that the ammunition consumption was too fast, and a small amount of deployment would not have much effect, and a large number of logistics units would be deployed to rebel.

However, Xu Jun will not let go of this excellent design, he has ordered Krupp to design a rapid-fire machine gun based on the "Fafnir", using 12.7 mm caliber machine gun cartridges, Xu Jun is going to install this machine gun on a heavy wheeled armored vehicle, I believe it will become a nightmare for Soviet Red Army soldiers in the cold night.

At the same time, Germany bought a license for the production of the M2 Browning from the United States, and the American arms industry has been sluggish and urgently needs to obtain overseas orders. In the face of the Germans waving checks, the plutocracy doesn't care whether you are a dictatorial fascist or not, as long as the price is right and the technology does not involve too many secrets, they are willing to sell anything.

The Browning M2 machine gun left a deep impression on the German generals during the shooting performance at the weapons test site, and everyone unanimously demanded that the German troops be equipped with a large number of such large-caliber machine guns to supplement the medium and long-range strike force.

Xu Jun also plans to replace some of the MG34 machine guns equipped with the M2 machine gun, which can be used as a universal anti-aircraft weapon for armored units, as well as attacking enemy infantry and lightly armored units.

At that time, whether it is an 82-barrel truck or an off-road Beetle, or a half-track personnel carrier and a heavy truck, it will be able to carry an M2 as a self-defense weapon. The disadvantages of this machine gun were excessive size and weight, and the amount of ammunition carried was limited, but after installation on a motor vehicle, these shortcomings ceased to exist.

Speaking of half-track vehicles, an improved version of the 251 is being developed, and for this purpose, several American M3 half-track personnel carriers were specially bought as references, and in the end what can be made, Xu Jun is waiting and seeing.

The half-track transporter has a strong characteristic of the times, is the product of a special period, when the roads in Europe and the Americas were not as developed as in later generations, most of the countryside is still earth-based roads, and even in many towns in Eastern Europe the roads are still dirt roads, and they become muddy in the rainy season, which is not an exaggeration, this situation abounds in Poland, Romania and the Soviet Union.

The half-track is suitable for driving on regular roads, as well as on the original dirt roads in the countryside, with good passability and considerable speeds. Therefore, the half-track became the preferred model of armored transport vehicles at that time, not because people at that time were unknowledgeable, but because the conditions at that time dictated it.

The full-tracked personnel carrier of later generations is an equipment that is born in order to be able to follow the tank unit to assault together in a large-scale armored war or even a nuclear war environment, requiring the personnel carrier to have the same off-road speed as the tank in addition to the three-defense capability, and the open-hull half-track vehicle lacks the ability to survive in this war environment, so it was quickly eliminated by history.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the mode of warfare changed dramatically, so most European countries abandoned the bulky, expensive, fuel-guzzling and complex full-tracked personnel carriers in favor of faster, more flexible and economical wheeled vehicles.

The topic is far away, back to the German half-track car family, the German army's logistics transport convoy, there are several new members. The Führer came up with a plan for the modification of a half-track truck, but in fact, it was not complicated to say that it was to replace the original rear wheels of the truck with a tracked action mechanism, so that an ordinary military truck would have the off-road ability of a half-track vehicle.

It was not only German trucks that were modified, but also some British and French trucks captured by the German army that had undergone similar modifications, especially several all-wheel drive models, all of which showed amazing off-road ability after being fitted with track modifications.

It is foreseeable that these seemingly simple modifications will greatly improve the German army's ability to transport and supply in harsh terrain conditions.
