Chapter 143: New Combat Mission
"Everyone, stop talking, the correspondent is here, maybe there is a combat mission." Ye Chuchu looked out from the observation window of the control tower, and saw a messenger running over quickly, and immediately reminded everyone.
Sun Hui and the three girls stopped talking, Ye Chuchu opened the top cover of the turret, leaned out, and the correspondent saw her and quickened his pace.
"Comrade Yelena, there is an order for you." The correspondent handed a folder to Ye Chuchu, and then saluted and left.
Ye Chuchu opened the folder, and sure enough, as she guessed, this was an operational order issued by the Leningrad Military Council to the special tank platoon, requiring the special tank platoon to assist the Soviet 67th Army stationed in Dubrovka against the German attack from the direction of Mga, and the order also specifically pointed out that the German SS armored units would be in the vanguard, and the task of the special tank platoon might be put into the new heavy tanks, and the task of the special tank platoon was to "serve as an iron fist" and give the invading enemy a "head-on blow".
After the establishment of the special tank platoon, it was directly under the leadership and command of the Leningrad Military Committee in terms of relations and did not belong to any group army. As a special unit, when needed, the Leningrad Military Council directly ordered the special tank platoon to go to the most critical battlefield, which is equivalent to a small "fire brigade", but because it was established by the order of the chief of the General Staff Zhukov, it can be said that it also accepted Zhukov's direct orders, of course, for the supreme commander Stalin, who "even had to ask about the placement of a roll of barbed wire and the setting of a machine gun position", he could also directly give orders to the special tank platoon.
The content of this order combined with what happened in history, and Sun Hui knew that the moment of head-to-head confrontation with the "Tiger" tank had finally arrived.
Sun Hui and Ye Chuchu went to see Voroshilov together and showed him the order of the Leningrad Military Committee, Voroshilov did not object to this, he thought that after several months of rest and training, the "521" crew should lead the special tanks to fight and achieve another "brilliant" victory, which boosted the morale of the Leningrad army and people, and at the same time he told Sun Hui and Ye Chuchu that the "GRU" had received news that Himmler was ordered by Hitler to inspect the territory of the German-occupied Soviet Union in the future, The main purpose of his visit was to inspect the victories of the SS and Wehrmacht on all fronts and the implementation of Hitler's "Eastern National Policy."
Hearing that Himmler was really coming to the Soviet front, Sun Hui and Ye Chuchuqiang suppressed the excitement in their hearts, which meant that they were getting closer and closer to achieving their goals.
Voroshilov told them that perhaps they would be able to kill Himmler without having to travel long distances through the German lines, because the GRU spies had also learned another important news: Himmler, who believed in the "occult" and superstitious astrology, would take the opportunity of this visit to secretly visit a mysterious ancient ruin near the city of Mga and possibly excavate it.
Upon hearing the news, both Sun Hui and Ye Chuchu were excited: for the "521" crew, this was a great opportunity to kill Himmler.
Voroshilov told Sun Hui and Ye Chuchu about his plan to form a guerrilla force to assist Sun Hui in his plan, and wished the "521" crew another brilliant success, Sun Hui expressed his heartfelt thanks to Voroshilov for his help, and wanted to entrust Voroshilov to help build a pistol grenade launcher modified with a flare gun as soon as possible, Voroshilov promised to make it out within a month and deliver it to them.
After all the preparations were completed, on June 2, a special tank platoon consisting of four of the latest Soviet heavy tanks set off for the Dubrovka front.
At the time of the arrival of the spring of '42, the military situation near Leningrad was still very tense. As early as April 5, Hitler, in Directive No. 41, ordered the German Army Group North to take Leningrad by means of a strong attack, in order to restore the decline of the German Army Group Center on the outskirts of Moscow, and at the same time to relieve the fear of the German summer offensive aimed at capturing the Caucasus oil fields and Stalingrad. The mass-presence of German troops in the areas of Mga, Sinavino, Tosno and Lyuban between the Leningrad Front and the Volkhov Front was a sign of their preparation for a new offensive against Leningrad.
According to Soviet estimates, the Germans were likely to launch a fierce assault in the vicinity of Volkhov and Tikhvin and join forces with the Finnish Army Group Kareli on the banks of the Svir River in order to completely encircle and isolate Leningrad and deprive it of the only line of communication with the interior via Lake Ladoga.
In view of this aggressive offensive posture of the German army, the Leningrad Military Committee immediately decided to take various contingency measures to improve the permanent fortification system of the in-depth echelon configuration within the defense line, strengthen the personnel and weapons of the front-line troops, and increase the strength of each combat division to more than 8,000 men. In addition, tens of thousands of Leningraders were quickly mobilized to fortify and build fortifications in the city in preparation for street fighting. They set up 306 kilometers of wooden barricades, built 15,000 fire points, and erected 35 kilometers of barricades.
By the end of May, the Leningrad Military Council, while ordering the troops to hold the ring line outside the city, decided to re-establish the defensive positions in the city. At first, the city was divided into three defensive sections: western, central, and eastern. The 1st Western Defensive Sector includes the Red October, Lenin and Kirov districts, the 2nd Central Defensive Sector includes the Kuibyshev District, Frunze District and Moscow District, and the 3rd Eastern Defensive Sector includes the Smolny and Volodarsky districts. Later, in order to defend the southern part of the city, a Red Banner Baltic Sea defense zone was established, and at the same time, a fourth defense section was set up in the Red Guard area to the east and northeast of the city, and a sixth defense section was set up in the coastal area. At the same time, by decision of the Leningrad City Committee, 26 district-level military training centers were set up in the city, where more than 17,000 young men and women received military training in the use of weapons, and on the basis of which militia battalions of armed workers were formed in various factories.
While the Soviet troops were fully preparing for defensive operations, the Germans were not idle.
Since the siege of Leningrad in September '41, the Germans have built many permanent fortifications in depth and echelons in the vicinity of Leningrad. The German defense system consisted of three frontal positions and three diagonal positions, and the trenches on the positions were connected to the fortifications and underground bunkers. In addition, the Germans set up magnetic minefields, anti-infantry barriers, anti-tank trenches and power grids within their multi-layered defensive lines, and many of the strong stone houses of local residents were converted into concealed machine-gun fire points.
