Chapter Ninety-Four: Equipment (I)
The individual equipment of the German infantry cannot be said to be very advanced in performance, but the quality and workmanship are very excellent, and it is worthy of being the product of the old military industrial enterprises. The winter tests were carried out by conventional weapons in the past, mainly to test the reliability and use of weapons at low temperatures.
Together with Dutch Shell, Farben has developed antifreeze gun oil, which has been tested at low temperatures in the laboratory freezer to ensure that it can be used normally under conditions of minus 40 degrees.
Gun oil is different from lubricating oil, of course, it also plays a certain role in lubrication, but the main purpose of gun oil is to clean the surface of weapon parts and cover them with an anti-rust layer to prevent weapon parts from rusting.
Gunpowder residue has a certain corrosiveness, each use needs to be wiped as soon as possible to wipe the barrel, chamber and bolt to avoid rust, even if it is covered with paint or blued gun shell, will gradually lose its protective effect because of the wear and tear in use, only regular maintenance can increase the service life of the weapon, to avoid failure in use.
The German army has a very strict weapon maintenance program, and soldiers will take care of their weapons spontaneously when they have free time, because the experience on the battlefield tells them that weapons are their second life.
Historically, the German army still used conventional gun oil on the Eastern Front, and in the low temperature environment, these gun oils became extremely viscous, and even solidified into solids in the extreme cold, with the consequence that the bolt movement of automatic weapons was hindered, the spring force was reduced, the re-entry was not in place, and the bullets could not be loaded normally.
Especially for light machine guns, the squad tactics of the German army were developed entirely around this weapon, and once the machine guns and submachine guns in the squad failed, then the entire infantry squad could only rely on a few rifles and grenades to withstand the wave of the Red Army's charge.
As for whether the rifle bolt will be frozen, it depends on the soldier's maintenance level, the rifle does not need to be lubricated as much as the machine gun, so it is less likely that the bolt will be completely frozen, unless the soldier is a novice and has put too much oil on his weapon.
At this time, the temperature in Norway has not yet reached the peak required for the test, but it is said that this year's winter will be particularly cold, and the test team is expected to stay until the beginning of the spring of the following year, conducting combat drills in various extreme temperatures, obtaining the most detailed data, and finding out the loopholes in the current German winter tactics.
The Führer sent winter combat instructors to the test detachment, a group of taciturn Finnish servicemen who at first seemed unaccustomed to contact with strangers, and who seemed to them to be overzealous enough to know what to do.
But then when it comes to the experience of fighting in the cold zone, these men showed a very high level of professionalism, they all participated in the recently concluded Soviet-Finnish war, and each of them had at least fifty Red Army souls in their hands.
They carefully taught the Germans how to survive in the snowy woodlands, how to rely on tools and the naked eye to find the right direction, you can't always count on the compass, in the low temperature it often fails, under the thick snow, you can't find any traces of the road, in the wind and snow you can't use the sun to discern the direction, if you don't have a certain knowledge of survival, it is easy to get lost in the snow, or even lose your life.
In history, the famous "Hakkoda Mountain Marching Incident" of the Japanese army was lost because of a snowstorm, and as a result, a reinforced squadron of 210 people was almost wiped out in the snowstorm. (Captain!) I've seen that tree! ∑(っ°Д°; )っ)
The Finns had a well-developed set of winter snow tactics, which had been tested in combat and was exactly what the Germans needed most at the moment. The Finns also saw through the plans of the German army, which was obviously preparing for the war against the Soviet Union, so they almost unreservedly taught the Germans all the experiences and lessons they had gained in the Soviet-Finnish war.
The Finnish officers saw a glimmer of hope in the Reconquista, so much so that they devoted themselves almost selflessly to training in order to inflict greater losses on the Soviet Red Army in the future Soviet-German war.
Finland and Germany frequently exchanged secret envoys during this period, and the terms and conditions of the alliance agreement were being negotiated, and once the two sides signed a treaty, Finland would fully cooperate with Germany's military operations on the northern front after the outbreak of war, and even launch a direct attack on the Soviet Union when the conditions were ripe.
Finland's foundation is not thick, and it is close to the Soviet Union, although the previous war has won a tactical victory, but the national strength and military strength have also suffered heavy losses, before rearming Finland, it is a little unrealistic to let them contain the Soviet Union, Xu Jun does not expect too much from them, he now only needs them to provide combat experience with the Soviet army, to train their German soldiers, how to fight and survive in the ice and snow.
The German polar test detachment was well supplied, full of morale, well-armed, experienced in combat, and a group of Finnish instructors who were familiar with cold combat, the Norwegian ice and snow did not hinder them much, but because of a pile of new and delicious military rations, they were able to feast from time to time, and if it were not for the lack of entertainment on the ice field, the soldiers would not want to return.
Compared with infantry units, the armored units were much more difficult to test, in addition to the same individual equipment tests as the infantry, they also had to test the operation and use of the main armored vehicles and motor vehicles currently equipped by the German army in cold environments, as well as the supply and maintenance work in cold temperatures.
At this time, the armored test detachment was almost close to the brigade size, and the total number of various test vehicles was almost a regiment, as well as a bunch of logistics, maintenance, reconnaissance, and communications units, and there were almost 2,000 people scattered around, not counting the technicians sent by the major military industrial enterprises and the administrative officers of the army's ordnance department.
The German army is not without research on the use of armored vehicles in winter, and the winter in Germany is also a cold and snowy land, and the armored tank units often conduct winter exercises, but even the coldest winter night in Germany is as warm as spring compared to the cold night in Norway.
Close to northern Norway, such as in the mountains near Narvik, winter temperatures can drop to minus 20 degrees Celsius, which makes the unprepared German armored soldiers suffer a lot. According to the local meteorological department, in the depths of winter, the temperature in the northern Norwegian ice field will drop to minus 30 degrees, and the extreme temperature will even reach minus 40 degrees, making Germans feel like they are listening to the Arabian Nights.
The original cast non-slip teeth of the tracks of German tanks were suitable for snow marching, but they caused great damage to asphalt and cement roads. At present, most of the track shoes of German tanks are installed with detachable rubber blocks invented by the Führer, which can well protect the road surface and effectively reduce the noise of the tank in progress.
However, if you hit an icy surface, the rubber block may slip, and if you happen to encounter a downhill road, the tank will turn into an uncontrolled sled, which is not funny for the tanker, and if you don't stop the tank before rushing out of the road, it will probably cause a crash. Therefore, when encountering dangerous road sections, the rubber blocks must be removed and the regular tracks must be used to march.
The Führer specially invented detachable cleats for the half-track vehicles currently equipped by the German army, which can be screwed on both sides of the track shoes, and two four-tooth cleats are installed every five track shoes, and the installation tool only needs a wrench, and it only takes twenty minutes for a skilled mechanic to complete the redress, and it is very easy to replace it in case of damage, but when installing and dismantling, the driver needs to start the vehicle to cooperate, otherwise you can only use jacks and cranes, so the modification time is difficult to control.
When personnel carriers enter dangerous road sections or need to march in snow, the troops can install such anti-skid teeth in advance, and in the process of domestic transport scheduling, they use conventional tracks to march.
At the same time, the Führer also prepared winter lubricants for all vehicles, which is not a high-tech invention, similar products have been studied in Sweden and Finland for a long time. Technically, it was not much difficulty, and Shell and Farben barely took much time to make a finished product with good performance, to put it bluntly, to adjust the additive composition of the engine oil, so that it does not solidify at low temperatures and maintains a certain lubricating viscosity.
This oil can also be used on artillery and other heavy equipment, but it can only be replaced when the temperature drops below freezing, because it is too thin to lubricate normal oil at room temperature.
Farben is working hard to develop the kind of compound lubricant proposed by the Führer, which can be used normally at any temperature, but when it comes to changing the manufacturing process, there are many problems that need to be solved, and it may take a year and a half to come up with a finished product.
