Chapter 325: Voice

The instruments used by the naturalized musicians are still classical Chinese instruments – the erhu, guzheng, flute, dulcimer and other instruments – the players of these instruments were originally born on these instruments, and as musicians, they have been trained in various instruments since childhood, which can be described as extremely difficult. But forced to make a living, I had to wander around the major courtyards or opera gardens to play, and because of all kinds of bullshit, I went to the people.

For example, Qi Rongyuan, a female naturalized folk musician who plays the pipa, lived a life that was simply not human before she picked up the pipa again in Dongfang Port. Born in Hubei, she studied art with a troupe since she was a child, and later the local economic conditions deteriorated, so she had to follow the troupe to the world, and arrived in Yangzhou a few years ago. She played the lute very well with one hand and was in charge of playing it in a local brothel. Although Qi Rongyuan's appearance is not very beautiful, she also has a bit of beauty, and she is quite favored by her peers in the troupe and has attracted much attention. After a month of playing, she encountered the most terrible thing of her life, a local gentleman who did not take a fancy to the famous number one in the brothel, but fell in love with her. The gentleman was old, ugly and fat, and he walked trembling every step of the way, but he wanted to marry her home as a concubine. The head of the troupe was against it at first, but he couldn't stand up to the fact that people were rich! A few hundred taels of silver were smashed down, and she was immediately sold. How could she want to marry such an old and ugly old man, she wanted to run away at the time, but she was caught and tied up by the people in the troupe and sent over, so she had no choice but to be someone else's concubine. The old gentleman was not bad at all, and he lost his freshness within a few days of marrying her, and went out to visit brothels, and finally had a stroke in a certain brothel and died in the woman's belly. Because Qi Rongyuan had just passed the door, she was falsely accused of being a "broom star" by the family's wife and concubine, and wanted to drag her out to be buried with the old man. Fortunately, I met a Taoist priest who was a little kind-hearted, and he used a bit of a trick when he was doing the Fa, which saved her from this mortal situation. She escaped a way to survive and exchanged some money for funeral ornaments, and went south to Mingzhou without looking back, but before she had time to find something, she was inexplicably caught again, and then sold to an unknown master, and then was sent to "Hong Kong" with many women, and finally was sent to a huge iron ship to the Oriental Port, and finally she was selected to join the Oriental Port Band because of her experience in playing strings.

Although there are men and women in this band, except for a few members of the troupe who came to An Yun to play, went to the wrong place and inexplicably came to Dongfang Harbor and were "detained" and not allowed to leave, their experiences were basically the same. The new life in Dongfang Port made them feel for the first time that they could live such a "human" life with such a lowly industry as a ninth-rate person, and they could even be respected, women no longer need to be afraid that they will be sold to some pot-bellied person as a concubine for some reason, and men no longer have to worry about a rich boss suddenly beating themselves up or even pushing them directly into the river to drown, even if the members of the troupe who strayed into Dongfang Port have lived a new life for a few days, they can't get rid of them now, Practice carefully every day under the guidance of Pan Dai and the veterans of the propaganda department, for fear that if you don't do well, you will be really kicked out of Dongfang Port and return to the previous ninth-rate life.

In the past, there had been no ensembles in the troupe, but this was the first time that these musicians had encountered such a performance requirement in the Propaganda Department of Vostochny Harbor, and they had to play according to the conductor's movements, and they used a strange thing called a "staves". Not to mention that these musicians have been educated by the five tones and twelve rhythms since childhood, in addition to the five tones of Gong, Shang, Jiao, Zheng, and Yu, there are Huang Zhong, Da Lu, Tai Tuan, Jia Zhong, Gu Xi, Zhong Lu, Rui Bin, Lin Zhong, Yi Ze, Nan Lu, Wu Shot, Ying Zhong Twelve Laws, not to mention that the ancient composers did not have a unified composition, and the recorded music scores were simply full of tricks, and quite a lot of only memorization of fingering and not notation, and the way of inheritance was more by experience and word of mouth than by music scores. These musicians who couldn't even read the whole word were almost fainting when they saw the crooked tadpoles on the staff at first sight, and no one dared to believe that this thing was sheet music, until the orchestra conductor Pan Dai personally showed them a song "Dedicated to the Senate", so they had to believe that this thing was sheet music, so they devoted themselves to serious study - of course, there were also people who were not serious, but it didn't take long to be sent to other departments, although it was not as tiring and bitter as the labor camp, But compared to the "fairy days" of sitting in the practice room and playing music, taking four days off a month and resting for 15 minutes every hour, it is still far from it.

After more than a year, Pan Dai finally corrected the bad habits of these music players, and then instilled the "correct" concept into their heads, although it is said that they can't start to play the symphony in the ensemble at every turn like the old world, but after a short time of rehearsal, the orchestra has been able to stumble and start playing in the ensemble, and it is quite like a back, and now Pan Dai feels very dissatisfied with the lack of corresponding recording equipment, Today, Pan Dai's main task is to urge the light industry department of the Industrial Committee to shift the focus of research and development to recording and playback equipment.

Chairman Mao said, "If we don't occupy the propaganda position, the enemy will occupy it." If you don't speak up, others will speak for you. "Now that the Senate has gained a foothold in Port Vostochny and has mastered the propaganda mouthpiece of Port Vostochny, what needs to be done now is to expand outward and spread the way of life of Port Vostochny to the whole world. But if you want to make the surrounding area immediately become "Oriental Port" overnight, it is tantamount to a fool's dream. Books and magazines are the first choice for cultural propaganda, and the Oriental Port is now secretly printing a large number of various "comic strip" publications for distribution, which is also a way to carry out cultural propaganda. However, in the "yellow zone" and "red zone" that are not in the "green zone", the vast majority of people are illiterate, and the heavy agricultural labor also consumes a lot of their time, and there is no opportunity to read books and newspapers.

Therefore, what is now falling into the eyes of the Propaganda Department of the Senate is to bring the voice of the Oriental Port to all directions through various means. Not to say that "a lie repeated a thousand times will become the truth", at least the songs and voices that sing the praises of the Senate can be spread and widely circulated in the "Yellow Zone" and "Red Zone", so that those potential and non-potential enemies can instill goodwill towards the Senate and the Oriental Port, subtly transform their thoughts, and turn them into friends of the Oriental Port, and at the very least, it can also make them begin to doubt their previous attitude towards the Oriental Port, and no longer become enemies, so that China's expansion pace will be smoother. The development and manufacture of recording and playback equipment naturally became an important goal of the Propaganda Department of the Senate. The production of recording and playback equipment inevitably requires the selection of a sound carrier, and the choice of which carrier has naturally become the object of dispute between the Industrial Committee of the Senate and the Propaganda Department.

In the old world, the debate over the superiority of analog and digital sound has never stopped, especially in the 21st century, with the advent of digital music carriers, from CDs and MP3s to Blu-ray, which have dominated almost all channels of music distribution, but have never been able to satisfy those who are obsessed with sound. What they were looking for was that otherworldly sound, and that kind of sound quality that almost only analog sound could provide. Now, although there is a complete digital sound technology manufacturing process in the scientific and technological reserves of the Senate, it cannot be used because it cannot reach the required technical level and production process, so the only option that can be selected at this time is analog sound. And there are two kinds of carriers of analog sound, the first is of course a magnetic tape, and the other is a vinyl record.

The two sides of the vinyl record are covered with grooves, when the record rotates with the turntable of the record player, the stylus gently slides into the groove, with the ups and downs in the groove, the stylus broadcasts different sounds, vinyl records are the great invention of mankind, its source is a master tape (a tape), the recording of original music generally uses multiple microphones to produce multiple audio tapes, and this master tape is synthesized from the recording of multiple audio tapes. But the production of vinyl records is very complicated, first of all, it is necessary to produce the master disk, which is made of an aluminum disc and coated with a flat layer of silicate, the texture of the silicate is softer than that of vinyl, which allows the carving knife to burn on it, and there is a hole in the center of the master disk to place the rotating shaft, and a hole next to it to position the carving knife. The master tape plays a sound to drive the engcher, and the cutter carves different grooves on the master disk. After the engraving, the master plate is plated with a layer of silver to make it a conductor, and it is placed in an electrolytic cell for electroplating and nickel plating. A few hours later, the master disk was plated with a thick layer of metal. After the master disk is removed from the electrolyte, it is cleaned and separated from the plated metal disk, at which time the mission of the master disk has ended, and it is basically destroyed. The resulting new plate is the "flip" side of the original plate, i.e. where the original plate is "concave", is "convex" on the new plate. This plate is what we call the "parent" template. Next, oxidize the parent disc and then plate it to get a new metal plate. We call this plate the "mother" template. Because this template is copied from the parent template, it has a groove like a record on it, and the record company can use the record player to play this plate to check the effect. This step can be repeated, that is to say, multiple parent templates can be reproduced from the parent template, but not indefinitely, generally ten. The next step is to copy the parent template from the parent template, similar to the previous step, each parent template can be copied out of ten parent templates. The master template is in phase with the record and can be played. The parent template is inverted to the record and can only be used to press vinyl, not play. The vinyl record is pressed out between the two parent stencils. To be more precise, vinyl records are made by placing vinyl particles in the middle of two parent plates, heating them with steam, applying a pressure of 100 tons, and pressing them out after 28 seconds. Each set of parent stencils can be pressed on a thousand vinyl records. From this, it can be seen that when a master tape is played once and a master disk is burned, about 100,000 records can be produced.

The enmity section is not ruthless, and the inspection is carried out by the cold department

The enemy is far away, and the rear inspection is the most obvious

The production of magnetic tape is different, where magnetic powder, solvent and various fillers are mixed and diluted in proportion and sent to a sand mill for dispersion. After the magnetic paste is fully dispersed, the impurities and agglomerates should be filtered out, and then the curing agent is added and sent to the coating machine, which evenly coats the magnetic paste on the surface of the base. Typical coating methods are reverse roll coating, scraper coating, concave plate coating, or extrusion coating. The orientation of the needle-shaped magnetic particles is random during application, and for tapes that are recorded longitudinally, directional magnets are used to align the magnetic particles. The coated tape cloth is dried to evaporate the solvent and then calendered, which is achieved by pressing the surface of the magnetic layer with a steel roller with a very low surface roughness. The purpose of calendering is to make the magnetic layer dense and to ensure that there is good contact between the tape and the magnetic head during use. After calendering, the tape cloth should be cured to polymerize the adhesive molecules inside the magnetic layer into a network structure copolymer, so as to improve the comprehensive properties of the magnetic layer, such as adhesion, strength, wear resistance, thermal stability and corrosion resistance. Finally, the tape cloth is fed into a cutter and cut into tapes of the appropriate width. Unlike vinyl, tape can be used to record not only analog sound, but also images, numbers, or other signals, and was the best choice for storing files before the invention of disks and hard disks.

In the past year or so, Pan Dai has finally corrected the bad habits of these music players, and then instilled the "correct" concept into their heads, although it is said that they can't start playing the symphony in the ensemble at every turn like in the old world, but after a short time of rehearsal, the orchestra has been able to stumble and start playing in the ensemble and it is quite similar, and now Pan Dai feels very dissatisfied that there is no corresponding recording equipment. Today, Pan Dai's main task is to urge the light industry department of the Industrial Committee to shift the focus of research and development to recording and playback equipment.

The recording head is actually a hoof-shaped solenoid, with the poles very close together and only a slit in between. The entire head is enclosed inside a metal case. The tape base is coated with a layer of magnetic particles, which are actually many small ferromagnetic particles. The tape walks close to the recording head, and the audio current makes the strength and direction of the magnetic field at the gap of the recording head constantly change, and the magnetic particles on the tape are magnetized into "small magnets" with different pole directions and magnetic strengths, and the sound signal is recorded on the tape. The structure of the sound head is similar to that of the recording head. As the tape passes in front of the slit in the capsule, the magnetic field generated by the "little magnet" on the tape passes through the coil of the capsule. Since the polarity and magnetic strength of the "small magnet" varies, the magnetic flux generated by it in the coil is constantly changing, so an induced current is generated in the coil, which can be amplified to emit sound in the speaker.

There is a need for development of these two sound carriers, but now the R&D department of the Senate has limited strength and can only choose one of them, so which carrier to choose for R&D and production has become the most concerned goal of the technical department.
