Chapter 504: Friction (Part II)

The Siamese government was in a state of diplomatic isolation, and the fanatical populace was inflamed to overestimate the power of the country itself, blindly believing that with the purchased planes and artillery, they could compete with the old Western powers.

By the time politicians find that the situation is starting to spiral out of control, the serious political consequences are already in place.

As a signal of displeasure, Britain and France severed most of their official dealings with Siam, leaving only the most basic channels of non-governmental communication, which were somewhat reluctant to convey the views of both sides, let alone diplomatic mediation.

Relations between Siam and France finally fell to a freezing point, and to the surprise of politicians, the colonial government of French Indochina, contrary to the restraint and forbearance it had maintained for the past two years, began to become aggressive.

The Siamese military discovered that the French were increasing their forces in the western border provinces, and although the exact number is not very clear, it is initially estimated that it should not be less than one infantry division.

The Japanese generously provided Siam with information they had gathered, showing that the French had transferred two infantry divisions from the country, all of which were elite troops who had participated in the European war, and the Japanese would not tell the Siamese that this was supposed to be used to defend against them, and the Siamese side also misunderstood, believing that all this was a premeditated operation against Siam.

As a result, contacts between Japan and Siam began to become more frequent, and officials of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs even privately stated that if there was a conflict between Siam and France, the Japanese Empire would firmly stand on the side of its Asian brothers and jointly resist the attack of Western colonizers.

In addition to providing Siam with information on the French colonies, Japan also took advantage of the diplomatic crisis in Siam to sell its own weapons to the Siamese government. Compared with the British and French weapons that Siam had always used, Japan's army weapons did not have many advantages, and the problems of materials and processing have always been a flaw for Japanese weapons. But Siam now has no more choice, except for the Japanese, they can no longer find a willing to trade with them, seeing that the French look like sharpening their knives, Siam urgently needs to obtain a batch of weapons to deal with the coming war.

The Siam Army purchased a shipment of Type 38 rifles from Japan to arm several newly drafted infantry regiments, as well as a shipment of much-needed military supplies such as belts, water bottles, and steel helmets.

The Royal Siam Air Force purchased twenty-four KI-30s from Japan, the Mitsubishi Type 97 light bombers used by the Japanese Army Air Corps, a single-engine light bomber that was once very active in the Chinese theater of war, and was able to launch accurate dive bombing against ground targets under the command of skilled veterans.

Along with the bombers, 12 KI-27 Nakajima 97 fighters were procured to replace the aging Hawker III in the Royal Siam Air Force. This is the first time that the Japanese government has agreed to export such an aircraft to a foreign country, because until this time, this fighter was still the main fighter used by the Japanese Army Air Force, and in the future it will be used to replace its KI-43 "Hayabusa" fighter, and it is currently being developed in China.

Historically, these planes departed from Nagoya, Japan, first by cargo ships through Taiwan and Hainan Island, and finally landed at Haiphong Port, and then flew back to Siam by Japanese and Siamese pilots.

Because of the führer's wings, the northern part of French Indochina did not fall into the hands of the Japanese, and relations between Japan and France remained superficially friendly, so if they continued to follow this route, it would be like a demonstration to the French, and the Japanese did not want to provoke the French any more.

After refueling and replenishing fuel from Taiwan, the transport ship went west into the South China Sea, bypassing the Indochina Peninsula, crossing the Philippine Strait, and finally entering the Gulf of Siam, with a total transportation mileage more than twice that of history.

This shows the strategic importance of French Indochina, and if Indochina were to be used as a springboard, the logistical supply lines for Japan's military operations in Southeast Asia would be shortened by at least half. In the memoirs of the Japanese army staff officers, they all believe that the root cause of the defeat of the Great East Asian War was buried as early as the moment of the failure of the Indochina Raider, and Morimoto Otaji, as a specimen of the stupid Showa Army officer, became the favorite object of torture by Japanese historical researchers.

Turning back to the topic, the Royal Siam Air Force has obtained these aircraft with decent performance, and their confidence has become high again, which cannot be blamed for their intelligence lag, or the Japanese side deliberately concealed something, in fact, even the Japanese did not understand the real situation of the French colonial air force at present.

At the moment, the Siamese side still believes that the French colonial air force is only an empty shelf, and only nine of the more than 100 aircraft are still combat-ready, and the rest are World War I-level garbage.

Now the Siam Air Force has more than thirty advanced fighters, which are already overwhelmingly superior in both quality and quantity. On the ground, the Royal Siam Army may be under tremendous pressure, but in the sky, the Royal Siam Air Force will be invincible.

The Air Force began to train its pilots day and night, trying to make these pilots proficient in these new aircraft in the shortest possible time. Because many Siamese pilots had been trained in Japan, and they were familiar with Japanese aircraft, this goal was easily achieved by the top brass of the Air Force.

The strengthening of the air force was no less than a shot in the arm for the Siamese government, and the attitude of the army generals began to harden, believing that if Siam had the upper hand in air supremacy, perhaps the French would have some concerns about the war, after all, this is not the time to fight a war by numerical superiority.

However, despite the confidence, the preparations must continue, and no one dares to bet on one-sided speculation.

The movement of the French infantry units has been very obvious, and the border posts have seen battalion-sized troops on the opposite side assembling in the field on more than one occasion, and even conducted a live-fire exercise in front of the border patrol team.

There are also a large number of enthusiastic young soldiers on the Siamese side, who believe that as soldiers defending the country, they must not ignore the despicable provocations of the French, and the Royal Siam Army must resolutely fight back against such behavior.

As early as the thirties, the young Zhuang soldiers in the Siamese army had formed independent factions within the army, they were all highly educated, had considerable influence at the grassroots level of the army, and their attitudes often represented the ideas of ordinary soldiers.

In late October and early November, there were dozens of clashes between Siamese patrols and French colonial forces along several borders in Cambodia's northwestern province of Banteay Meanchey. Several soldiers have been injured in the clashes, but fortunately no one has been killed.

"The kitten calls the blue house, the kitten calls the blue house, do you hear me? The kitten calls to the Blue House. Major Sporu shouted with his oxygen mask in his hand.

There was silence on the radio, which was clearly unusual, and Spellu flipped the FM switch to make sure it was set to the preset frequency.

"White Three, can you get in touch with the Blue Room here, there may be some problems with my radio." Sboru said to Second Lieutenant Nemo.

"Wait a minute, White One." The second lieutenant's voice came from the headphones.

"I can't get in touch here, if it's not that the two of us have a radio problem at the same time, then there must be something wrong in the blue room." After more than ten seconds, Lieutenant Nemo replied.

"It's unlikely, it's a first-class air station, and there are more than two radios on duty at all times." Shi Boru said.

"White Four, what do you think?"

"I agree with the chief, it's really unlikely, I've never encountered this kind of thing before, and the navigation station is working normally." Second Lieutenant Sara replied.

"Don't forget that this is French Indochina, anything can happen, White Four." Nemo and his friend raised the bar.

"Shut up both of you, anyway, it will only take another five minutes, and we will be above the air terminal, and then everything will be understood, now descend to three thousand and a half." Spellu immediately put a stop to a debate that could go on for a long time.

Three Mercedes-Schmidt fighters slightly deflected their fuselages and began to slowly descend to the flight altitude.

The weather conditions were good that day, except for some broken clouds at a low altitude of 700 meters, and the view from the air was very good.

BF109 headed at cruising speed towards the Sethophon Air Station, an important air station just 35 kilometers from the border, where the French Colonial Air Force deployed a squadron of reconnaissance aircraft, armed with two Farman F350s and four F430s, to monitor the surrounding 100-kilometer-long border.

Recently, the station has been extremely active, pilots often cross the border to conduct reconnaissance, and Siamese fighter jets have been late every time, and so far there is no record of being intercepted by the other side.

"White One, there's smoke on the ground!" Ensign Nemo reported loudly.

"I see it, White Three." Shi Boru frowned and looked at the few black plumes of smoke that suddenly rose on the ground.
