Chapter 239: Dai Gong Through the Ages
Chapter 239: Dai Gong through the ages
The 96th Division of the 5th Army arrived at Menggong on May 10 and Mengguan (Mengchuan) on the 18th. The troops were sleepy and tired, and more than 800 people went missing along the way. When they arrived on June 24, there were only about 3,000 people left in the division.
Deputy division commander Hu Yibin led the rearguard troops to be ambushed by the enemy south of Grape and was killed in the battle, and the rest of the troops were led by Chief of Staff Hu Xinyu to meet the main force at Grape.
Due to the difficulty of collecting grain in grapes, the 96th Division sent an advance section to Weixi, Yunnan Province to eat.
The troops temporarily stationed in Grape will send planes to deliver grain from within the country, and there is a risk of running out of food when it rains. On July 27, Chiang Kai-shek telegraphed: "The division will be transferred from grapes to Weixi and return to China."
The 96th Division marched eastward over Gaoligong Mountain to Weixi, and transported grain from the military station headquarters to the west of Gaoligong Mountain.
On 17 August, the division went to Jianchuan via Weixi, and the whole division was assembled at Jianchuan on 23 August.
The 96th Division, which had 9,000 men in Burma, was alone in the Battle of Pingmanna, with the 18th and 55th Divisions fighting fiercely for 8 days and nights, with 2,200 casualties.
During the retreat, 3,800 casualties were lost. When they arrived in northern Myanmar, there were only about 3,000 people left in the division. The situation of losses was roughly the same as that of the new 22nd Division.
The 200th Division, after obeying the order to abandon Tangji on 26 April, pursued the enemy from Lerem to the north of Lacheng, and advanced to the vicinity of Ha Bang on 29 April.
On the same day, Lashio fell and the Eastern Front collapsed. Luo Zhuoying telegraphed the 200th Division under the command of Gan Lichu, the commander of the 6th Army, and moved to Jingdong.
Although the 200th Division was far from the main force of the headquarters. Alone behind enemy lines, they were in great fighting spirit, and on 30 April they began attacking the enemy of Releem.
On 2 May, Du Yuming ordered the division to "move from Tangji to Jingdong through the gap between Leiliem."
However, at that time, if you crossed the Salween River to retreat to Jingdong, you only needed to pass through a river and a road, the road was close, and the enemy's strength was relatively thin; If you go north to join the main force of the 5th Army, there are two rivers and three roads on the way, the road is long, and you have to break through the enemy's blockade.
After discussing the world with the division and regimental cadres, Dai Anlan decided to go north to rebuild. On 4 May, the 200th Division was again placed under the command of the 6th Army.
In accordance with the telegram issued by Commander Du Yuming on 30 April to quickly assemble near Jesha via the Mandalay Highway northeast of Tangji and northeast of Mandalay, the whole division marched northeast from the mountains north of Releem.
On May 8, Meimiao had passed and was ready to cross the Nandu River and return to China through Bamo and Nankan.
During the retreat to the north, the 200th Division had to avoid the main lines of communication, take small roads, dig into dense forests, and not only overcome the difficulties of lack of provisions, no water to drink, and no medicine to treat the wounded and sick, but also had to be ready to fight the Japanese troops at any time.
Whenever they wanted to pass through rivers or roads, they would hide their troops in the nearby mountains and forests during the day, send scouts to disguise themselves as Burmese people to find out the situation, and at night they would occupy covering positions in small detachments, and large troops would quickly pass through.
In this way, the troops successfully crossed the Nandu River and passed the Raman road.
On 10 May, the 200th Division joined up with the 1st and 2nd regiments of the corps led by Huang Xiang, guerrilla commander of the 5th Army, and contained two battalions of the 6th Army and a new 28th Division of the 66th Army.
On the night of 18 May, the 200th Division was ambushed by two battalions of the enemy's 56th Division while passing through the Xibao to Mogok road.
The enemy and the enemy fought all night in the middle of the night.
Dai Anlan commanded the 599th Regiment to surround the enemy from the left flank and was unfortunately shot and wounded.
Although the 200th Division broke out of the enemy's ambush circle, it suffered heavy casualties. Dong Qian, chief of staff of the division, Liu Shuren, commander of the 599th Regiment, and Liu Jihan, commander of the 600th Regiment, were missing, and only one battalion of strength remained in each of the two regiments, and only one and a half battalions remained in the 598th Regiment.
After the battle, it was discovered that the whereabouts of Division Commander Dai were unknown, and Zhou Zhi, chief of staff of the division, risked his life to search in many ways, only to find that Division Commander Dai was seriously injured and fell in the grass beside the road.
The rest of the 200th Division, led by Deputy Division Commander Gao Jiren, Division Infantry Commander Zheng Tingji, and others, continued to move towards Mengmi (Monmitte).
On May 23, the 200th Division and the 1st and 2nd Supplementary Regiments and other units worked together to advance to Tengchong, an important town in western Yunnan, through the gap between Nankan and Bamojian.
The Chongqing Military Commission received information from the Air Force and ordered the commander-in-chief of the 11th Group Army to send Tengchong troops to the border to explore contacts.
At about 5 p.m. on 26 May, General Dai Anlan died of his wounds and was martyred at the age of 38 at the 598th Regiment in Maobang Village, north of Mengmi.
The engineer battalion immediately cut down the wooden coffin and carried the coffin forward by the 598th Regiment.
On June 2, the 200th Division passed through the last pass of the breakout, the South (Kan) and Ba (Mo) Highway, reached the vicinity of Tengchong on the 17th, crossed the Nu River to Caojian in late June, and moved to Yunlong for training on June 29.
According to a report by Gao Jiren, deputy division commander, there are still 4,650 officers and men left in the division. After that, he was ordered to go to Yongping to assemble and train. The 200th Division also had 9,000 men in Burma.
In addition to the battle casualties in the defense of Tongzhan and the attack on Tangji, the casualties in the encounters on the way to retreat, especially through the Seymour Road, were particularly heavy.
On July 15, General Dai Anlan's coffin arrived in Kunming. More than 10,000 representatives from all walks of life held a public memorial at Zhizhou Stadium.
The tall coffin is painted black, the front and back are painted red, and the front and back are painted red, and the front is written with seven golden characters of "General Dai Anlan's Spirit". The hearse is led by the "Dai Gong'an Mingjing, Commander of the 200th Division of the Fallen Army Major General" in red silk and white letters, and the portrait of the general is behind.
On the side of the hearse were four bloodstained shirts. On the side of the altar hangs the couplet of Wang Hesu, the widow of the general, in a prominent position:
The way of heaven is not based on the decline of the world, and the king is heroic and benevolent, and he has been lucky to take the name of the merit, and he will be slightly rewarded;
The national disaster is not continuous, and I am suddenly strong and shoulder a huge responsibility, how should I serve the two elders diligently and teach the arc?
The venue was filled with hundreds of couplets presented by military and political chiefs at all levels and people from all walks of life.
After that, the coffin was transported to Quanzhou, Guangxi, the birthplace of the 200th Division, through Anshun, Guiyang, Liuzhou, Guilin and other places.
Everywhere I went, there were thousands of empty alleys to welcome the loyal souls and solemnly sacrifice them. Mrs. Dai, her three sons and one daughter, and representatives of the 200th division have been escorted with the spirit. Newspapers across the country published commemorative articles.
Zhang Ziwen knew that it was only September, and Dai Anlan's mourning hall had been demolished.
Now Zhang Ziwen in the square is in tears, and he hasn't been together for a long time, and it is really rare to see a person like Dai Anlan who serves the country and the people.
The tension on the side was ashamed at this time, if it wasn't for his negligence and being supported behind enemy lines by Dai Anlan, Dai Anlan would not have died.
"You don't have to blame yourself, Brother Seagull was killed in battle, and he was shot in front of him and died."
After more than a month, Zhang Ziwen brought his remaining 1,000 people back to China.
Du Luming, as Zhang Ziwen thought, did not give himself a number, but gave himself a deputy commander of a guerrilla detachment.
To put it bluntly, he is a person who takes care of himself, but the name is better.
Because of the heavy losses, Zhang Ziwen had to take a break, and Du Luming let Zhang Ziwen return to Qujing to rest and recuperate, ready to support the front line at any time.
