Chapter 881: Confrontation (2)

(a)

Reading the "Naxian Bhikshu Bhikshu Sutra", I felt that the two sides were asking questions and answers, and the intelligence was agitated, and it was wonderful, and before I knew it, I saw the East and the white, and finished reading the first volume of the sutra in one go.

The next day, I couldn't help the attraction of the scriptures, and continued to read the next volume of the confrontation between the Western philosopher king and the Indian Buddhist monks.

King Milan asked the bhikkhus: Among you Shamen, there are people who persuade people to do good deeds all their lives, and there are also people who persuade people to do good deeds at the end of their lives, and to be guided by the Buddha, do you have to do good deeds all your life in order to live in a good place, or do you have a good deed at the end of your life so that you will not fall into the evil path?

Then the first bhikkhu said, "O king, do you start digging a well when you feel thirsty and want to die?" Or do you start first when you don't feel thirsty?

King Millan said, "Of course, you can't wait until you die of thirst to dig a well."

Then the first bhikshu said, "So, O king, do you wait until you are hungry before you start sowing and planting food?" Or will it be cultivated before? Will you wait until the enemy is under the gates before you start raising an army to train it? Or will you do it before?

King Millan said, "All right, all right, I understand."

Then the first bhikshu said, "The Great King is sage, but there are still many fools who do not understand the truth." Here, I would like to advise all of you in this room, do not feel that you can abandon good and do evil in ordinary times, you can abandon righteousness, and just be unright, and feel that as long as you have a thought of goodness at the end of your life, you will not fall into the three evil paths, you must know that when you are healthy, conscious, and rational, you cannot be full of good thoughts and stick to good deeds, how can you expect to be able to do it when you are dying of weakness and faintness? Don't mislead others and yourself like this, crying when you are dying is useless, and you can't regret it.

King Miran said, "There are often people among you who say that the fire of the world is not as powerful as the true fire of Prajna Samadhi. Small stones that are placed in the fires of the world and burn for three days and three nights do not melt, and huge mountains can melt in an instant for those who have attained the true fire of Prajna Samadhi. However, there are also people among you who say that although the fire of Prajna is so powerful, there are also thousands of sentient beings who have done all kinds of negative karma in their lifetimes, which have gone through thousands of lives, and have not yet died. Isn't there a self-contradiction in this?

The first bhikshu replied like a stream: There is no contradiction. In Buddhism, those who see emptiness can instantly realize that "there are obviously six joys in the dream, but there is no great emptiness after awakening", not to mention that the huge mountain range can be dissolved into the invisible in an instant, and the three thousand worlds can also be turned into a dream bubble in an instant. However, even if you see emptiness, it doesn't mean that the good and bad karma of the past will not have some kind of effect on future lives. This is what the Vimala Sutra says: "There is no self, no creation and no recipient, and the karma of good and evil will not perish." It's just that for an enlightened person, because he sees the relationship between karma and the future, he can change the effect and manner of karma's influence on the future through his present mental behavior, and constantly transform the bad influence into a good influence, so that the good influence can bring more good influence.

As for the question of why the negative karma of many people who have gone through thousands of lives has not been able to eliminate the negative influence, you can understand it this way, O King.

May I ask the king, when the concubine of your harem is pregnant, she eats countless delicacies, will these things be digested when they enter the belly?

King Millan said, "Of course it will."

Then the first bhikkhu said, "So, will the fetus in her womb be digested by the mother?"

King Milan said, "Of course not."

Naxian Bhikkhu: May I ask you, the king, why is food digested but not digested in the womb of the mother?

King Miran said, "Because she feeds herself with food, but she feeds the fetus with herself, and the food is not the object of her offering, but the fetus is, so the food will perish, and the fetus will not."

Then the first bhikshu said, "That's right, O king." There are many sentient beings today who are doing their best to provide for their negative karma and make it grow up with their devastating thoughts and deeds over many lifetimes, and they are far more diligent than your concubines who are trying to provide for their own negative karma, and how can those negative karma perish. To do so is to constantly pour cold water on the fire, and to do this foolish thing of dousing the fire of prajna with bitter water every day, how can you expect the fire of prajna to melt boundless karma?

King Milanyou: Can all of you Shamen attain Nirvana after all?

Then the first bhikshu said, "Not everything." Only those who are able to distinguish between truth and falsehood, good and evil, beautiful and ugly, and who follow this standard in a down-to-earth manner to practice all good can attain Buddhahood. "When the practitioner pursues it, those who do not follow it abandon it", "when the person who reads it, and those who do not recite it abandon", this must be practiced by everyone personally, and if it is not practiced, it cannot be achieved, even if it is the Buddha, it cannot replace the practice of his own son.

King Milan saluted: "First, I admire your honesty. However, all the monks here, have you all witnessed nirvana?

The first bhikkhu replied, "You can't say that."

King Milan said, "Since we have not witnessed Nirvana, how can we be sure that witnessing Nirvana will bring ultimate liberation to perfection and bliss?"

Then the first bhikshu said, "O king, have you ever had your hands and feet cut off?"

King Millan said, "Of course not."

Then the first bhikkhu said, "How could the king, then, know that it is a painful thing to have his hands and feet cut off?"

King Millam said, "Because I have seen that after others have been punished in this way, without exception, all of them groan, I know that it is very painful."

Bhikkhu: So do we. Although I have not experienced it myself, but when I see those great sages who have witnessed it myself, everyone says that after all, nirvana can bring the ultimate liberation of perfection and bliss, so I know that it can bring ultimate liberation.

King Milan said, "Then bhikkhu, have you seen the Buddha himself?"

Nasan Bhikkhus: No, Great King.

King Milan asked, "So, your master has seen it?"

Nasan Bhikkhu: I haven't seen it either.

King Milan: Then your master's master must have seen it.

The first bhikkhu replied truthfully: No.

King Milan said, "Since you haven't seen it, how can you know that the Buddha is not a historical legend, but a real person?"

Nasan Bhikkhu: May I ask you, O King, have you seen your ancestors 500 generations ago?

King Millam said, "I have not seen it."

Then the first bhikshu said, "So, has your father, or your ancestor, seen it?"

King Millan said, "I have not seen it."

Bhikkhu: So, how can you know that your ancestors 500 generations ago are not a historical legend, but actually existed?

King Milan smiled and asked, "Then the first bhikkhus, you have never seen the Buddha, how can you be so sure that his wisdom is unmatched?"

Nasan Bhikkhu: Great King. There are five rivers in your dominion, and they flow into the sea every day, but never overflow or return, so we will know that the sea is so vast and deep that no river can exceed the depth and breadth of the sea. We wait for Shamen, and the same is true. Because for hundreds of years, it is common for the sages of all countries and ethnic groups to admire the Buddha's way, and after studying the Buddha's way, the troubles are cut off, the character is outstanding, the strength increases, the heart is broad-minded, the dragon and the phoenix in the adulthood, the teacher of all beings, loved by all the people, born and died calmly and worry-free, fearless in all difficulties and dangers, grateful for the Buddha's teachings, and vows to pass on the life and generation to retribution, so we believe that the wisdom of the Buddha is unmatched.

King Milan nodded and said, "Very good, I admire your faith. However, the Buddha has been in extinction for hundreds of years, and you can't even see his face, so how can you learn from him?

Bhikkhu: Just now in the temple, I saw the calligraphy written by the king on his desk. May I ask you, who is your calligraphy teacher?

King Milan said, "Oh, I'm currently writing a post by an ancient calligrapher named "Quality."

Then the first bhikshu said, "The great calligrapher has been dead for hundreds of years, how can the king learn calligraphy from him?"

King Milan said: Although others are dead, but the calligraphy works are still there, I imitate the calligraphy works as if I learned them myself.

Then the first bhikkhu said, "The same is true of the samun." Although the Buddha has been in extinction for many years, the sutra precepts are still there, and when we study according to the sutra precepts, it is the same as learning from the Buddha himself.
