Chapter 7: The Forgotten Corner
After what happened to Mina and Valerie, Vane is very sensitive to child-related things. He was keenly aware of the unusualness in Derich's words.
"We can help you, but you have to tell us everything you know. Vane had seriousness in his eyes.
"I swear, I'm telling the truth. Derich raised his right hand.
"Let's go, go see your daughter. Vane stood up.
Derich hurriedly got up from the ground and thanked him repeatedly, as if hope burned in his eyes.
Derich expertly led the crowd through the dark alleys. The layout here is more chaotic than the Beibu Gulf area seen before, so it can be said that there is no layout. The dilapidated wooden houses were already good places to live, but there were more shacks made of wood and canvas, and houses of different heights were densely stacked together. The roads here are even more intricate and varied, with quite a few roads passing through the houses, some even just a plank between the two houses.
"This is the slum of the Gulf of Tonkin and the Gulf of Tonkin of Tonkin Gulf. Be careful with your purses and satchels. Derich said as he walked.
As Derich said, the slums of the Gulf of Tonkin are like a forgotten corner of God.
The heat also enveloped the slums, with most of the houses with their doors wide open, or many without doors. Shame doesn't seem to exist here, and when viewed from the door, most of the men and women in the small space are scantily clad or even naked.
If there is only one word to describe this place, it is probably lifeless. The pedestrians on the road moved slowly like zombies, and the people in the room stared blankly at the door, occasionally poking their heads out and quickly retracting. Vane even accidentally kicked a man sitting in the corner, who was motionless, not knowing whether he was alive or dead.
Of course, all this is just the appearance, and Vane suddenly remembered what the monkey face said - "There are everyone here, but there are definitely the most bad people." That should be the only truth he ever said.
While he was thinking about it, Derich stopped. In front of him was a dilapidated log cabin, the rough planks were badly deformed, some of them had been cocked, and it looked like it was going to collapse at any moment.
"Here we are, here it is. Derrish pushed the small wooden door open with a creak.
"Daddy, Daddy!" a little girl ran out with a "knock knock." Derich crouched down, arms outstretched, and a smile on his face for the first time. The little girl did not dislike the filth of Derich's body and threw herself into his arms.
"Susie, Daddy is back. Derich rubbed Susie's hair, picked her up, turned to Vane and the others and said, "Let's go, go in and talk." ”
The cottage is very small, so small that a small bed takes up nearly half of it. Derich carefully placed Susie on the bed and said embarrassedly to the crowd, "The place is too small. ”
Vane waved his hand and gave Elena a look. Elena understood, walked up to Susie, leaned down and said, "Susie, hello. ”
"Who are you?" said Susie, with big eyes on her dirty face, looking at everyone curiously.
"We're your dad's friends. Susie, have you had any guests in your house lately?" asked Elena in a relaxed tone, thinking that she was still very popular with children.
Who knew that Susie cried out "wow", crying and shouting "Uncle Magician".
"Uncle Magician?" Vane thought of something in his heart.
"What a child is talking about, there is no magician, I just owe Monkey Face some money......" Derich hurriedly explained.
"Drishy, I can't help you like this. Vane said, pulling out the sapphire staff from behind his back. "Is he holding a staff like this?"
"No, no, it's a sheep—" Derich suddenly realized he had slipped out.
"It's a man with a staff of sheep's skull and a black hooded cloak. Vane spoke for him.
"Why are you ......?" said Derrich, his eyes wide, and he fell to his knees with a horrified face, "Master Magician, don't say that I said that." They're demons who kill people without blinking!"
Susie on the side cried even louder.
"Go out and talk about it, don't scare the kids. Vane's face was calm, and he turned and walked out, but his heart was like a stormy wave. Black Cloak again, who the hell are they?
The crowd closed the door and stood again in the filthy alley. The night was like ink, and the stars were sprinkled on the ground, but the dampness and stench in the air could not be stopped.
"Derich, who the hell is the Black Cloak?"
"I don't know......" Derich's eyes became empty again, and he whispered. "They only come when they're 'inspecting' and never speak, and no one knows if they're men or women—"
Derich swallowed and continued: "It's not even human......" He shuddered all over his body after saying that. "Some say they don't have a face at all......"
"What do you mean by 'inspection'?" Vane interrupted Derich's rambling.
"Monkey Face will lead them to the house of the borrower as if they were children under the age of ten. I heard that someone lied about the age of the child, but I didn't hide it from them. In fact, in recent times, it's not just people who have borrowed money, there are children lost here almost every day. But who cares about a slum child?" said Derich, hunching his shoulders and laughing at himself.
After learning that Dridge owed Monkeyface more than one gold coin, Vane gave him two gold coins. He can't save everyone, but he can't die without saving them.
Derich's words fell like a stone on everyone's heart. But they were just a few adventurers, so what could they do if they found the Black Cloak? If they dared to do such a thing in the capital of the kingdom, the Black Cloak must have no fear. Thinking of this, Vane's heart cooled.
Nothing to say all the way.
When I returned to the Blackwater Inn, it was already late at night, and the boss was nowhere to go, leaving only an apprentice he had seen during the day to sleep on the table. After saying goodbye to Elena and the others, Vane and Felder tiptoed back to their room.
"Whew...... Today I really got to know the Gulf of Tonkin Gulf. Felder let out a sigh of relief.
Vane didn't speak, he looked at the roof in a daze, not knowing what he was thinking.
"Vane, do you still have the contents of your satchel? I was afraid that my sword would be gone when I came out of there. Felder laughed twice, and then couldn't laugh anymore.
"You said that if I became a great mage one day, would I be able to do whatever I wanted?" Vane said quietly.
"Of course you can!" Felder sat up from his bed, feeling refreshed. "You must know that the Great Mage, like the Chief Paladin, is the top existence in this world!"
"And what do you want to do?" Felder looked at Vane.
Vane didn't speak, a glint flashing in his dark eyes.
