CHAPTER XXXV

Cassandra is a small seaside city hundreds of miles southeast of Thessaloniki and a Turkish naval fortress. A small fleet of the Turkish Navy, consisting of 2 destroyers, 3 shore defense gunboats, 3 torpedo boats and several transport vessels, is stationed here, as well as more than 2,000 troops from the fortification. The commander here was Rear Admiral Ozturk, one of the few brave generals in the Turkish army, who was assigned to this small place because of his odd temper and confrontation with his superiors. Although the weapons in the hands of the soldiers here are no different from those of other Turkish troops, under Ozturk's training, their combat effectiveness and morale are a cut above those of ordinary Turkish troops.

Just as Kemal's forces appeared outside Thessaloniki, Ozturk received a request for help from the governor of Thessaloniki, and he led two destroyers and 1,500 garrisons from the water to reinforcements. While Kemal was leading his forces through the city to clear the recalcitrant elements, Ozturk's fleet had just entered the port of Thessaloniki.

Seeing the Turkish soldiers firing at each other on the pier, Ozturk understood that the revolutionaries outside the city had stormed the city, and he quickly commanded his men to land and occupy the pier with the support of naval guns, and then began to gather the defeated troops and hold the port.

Kemal's forces, after the failure of the assault on the port, regrouped two blocks east of the pier and sent someone to call Ollie outside the city to come to their aid.

"What? Warship! Shelling! Ollie heard the communications soldier sent by Kemal say that warships had appeared in the harbor and were shelling the troops attacking the harbor, and hurriedly pulled him to the front of the map, "Tell me how many warships there are?" In what location? ”

It's a pity that the poor communications soldier didn't even see what the warship looked like before he was driven back by the enemy's gunfire, so he couldn't provide Ollie with useful information. Fortunately, a vacant lot outside the city has been used as a temporary airfield for ease of communication, and two planes are parked there.

"Link, you take a battalion to concentrate the artillery of the Turkish army defending the city, and find some more shells!" Ollie instructed the officers below, and he ran towards the plane, "Pilot! Hurry up and get ready for takeoff! I'm going to the port! ”

When Oli flew over the port of Thessaloniki, Kemal's troops were charging the dock, the Turkish troops holding the pier were firing wildly with machine guns, and the two destroyers in the harbor were constantly firing at the attacking side, and the attacking crowd was occasionally thrown up with severed limbs.

"Pilot, lower it a little more!" Ollie sat in the co-pilot's seat, and it was the first time he had observed a battle from this angle.

Rear Admiral Ozturk, who was standing on the bridge of the destroyer, watched the plane whizz over his head, he had only heard of such a thing as an airplane before, and this was the first time he had seen a real thing. Although he didn't know what this thing, which was not much bigger than a carriage, he had a sense of foreboding.

"Alright, pilot! Let's fly around the harbor again! "Ollie had clearly seen that the warships in the harbor were only two old destroyers, and that they could be killed with a six-pounder gun if they were in a suitable position for shelling.

By the time the plane returned from the harbor, Ollie had found the position he was looking for - a small open space behind a street north of the harbor, from which the guns could be fired just enough to reach the destroyer over the roof, but the destroyer's fire could not reach it directly. By this time, Oli's soldiers had gathered eight 6-pounder guns that could be used in the Turkish defenders' positions and found hundreds of shells from the arsenal. Ollie went with a battalion and 4 cannons to the firing position on the north side of the pier, while the remaining troops and artillery went to the east side of the pier to support Kemal.

Half an hour later, Ollie and his troops finally arrived there. By this time, the situation at the dock was already very bad, the Turkish army under the leadership of Ozturk had gathered more than 4,000 soldiers, and the artillery on the warship had caused heavy casualties to Kemal's troops, and Kemal was ready to retreat if it were not for the support of the Oli regiment. Although most of the garrison in Thessaloniki had declared an uprising, they now had no unified command and could not coordinate with Kemal's forces, but simply rushed forward and eventually became the ghosts of the Turkish navy. When the situation turned against them, some even began to waver.

"Hurry up and get your artillery ready, and the rest of us will build a defensive position nearby! Block the streets with two machine guns and occupy a few houses over there! Ollie commanded his men to prepare quickly, and because of the proximity to the docks, he had to use the more than three hundred soldiers in his hands to deal with a possible attack by the enemy on the docks.

Boom...... Boom......

A few columns of water rose not far from Ozturk's destroyer, and the officers on board raised their binoculars to see where the guns were firing at them, but all they could see was the corpses and the ruins, and there was not even a shadow of the artillery.

Boom......

The column of water that rose a few dozen seconds later was closer, and this time the destroyer began to shake.

"Quick! Find out the location of the enemy's artillery and hurry up and return fire! Ozturk shouted anxiously, but no one knew where the shells were coming from, and the smoke from burning around the pier obscured the smoke that rose from the guns after they were fired.

Bang......

Eventually, another destroyer was hit hard, and the fire quickly rushed onto the old destroyer with an iron and wooden hull.

"Hurry up or we're going to get hit sooner or later!" Ozturk finally remembered something and gave the order to get his warship to start moving. Just then another shell hit the hapless destroyer, and then there was a violent explosion, and the ship began to tilt and soon began to sink.

"Great! Now concentrate your fire on the other one, don't let it run away! Ollie leaned on the roof in front of the artillery position, watching as one destroyer burned and sank, while the other began to move slowly.

"Lieutenant Colonel, the enemy's infantry is coming!" The Turkish troops on the pier had already discovered that the shells were flying from this side, and Ozturk's troops took the lead in rushing over.

"The artillery continues to fire, others against the enemy's infantry!" Ollie climbed down from the roof of the house and ran to the corner of the street to direct the soldiers to defend it. The first wave of Turkish soldiers, numbering more than 200 men, rushed with rifles.

"Look for death!" Ollie smiled contemptuously, the two Maxims blocking the street would be enough to reimburse them.

On the whirling destroyers in the harbor, Rear Admiral Ozturk saw through his binoculars that his soldiers were being put down like wheat harvesters, and the middle of the street was littered with corpses.

"Their artillery must be behind the houses on both sides of the street, firing that way!" Ozturk excitedly shouted to the sailors on the deck gun position, the other party's shells kept chasing him, and one of them actually grazed the strings of the ship, so frightened that the people on the ship immediately knelt down and thanked Allah for the blessing. "Signal soldiers, flag slogan! Let the soldiers of the docks continue to storm after our shelling, and be sure to destroy that artillery position! ”

Ozturk found that his whole body was soaked in sweat, as soon as the opponent's artillery appeared, it would be immediately wiped out by the superior artillery fire on his own ship, this time the opponent actually found such a hidden place, the shells fired just over the roof, that position he couldn't see or hit, now he can only use the naval guns to weaken the defense of the opponent's infantry, and then let his infantry rush up to destroy the artillery there.

"Everyone, hide ......"

Rumble...... Rumble......

After a burst of shelling, two machine guns at the street entrance had been reimbursed, and a dozen or so Oli soldiers lay in pools of blood. At this time, Ollie could no longer care about the distress, and commanded the soldiers to drag the wounded to the back for rescue, and then prepared to meet the charge of the opposing infantry.

"Oh...... Oh...... "There were nearly 1,000 Turkish soldiers rushing up this time, and although the warships in the port could no longer take care of the pier at this time, the Turkish army's several machine guns on the pier still suppressed the attacking troops on Kemal's side.

"Shoot!" With two machine guns missing, the gunfire on Ollie's side was much quieter, and all that was left was a Maxim on the second floor on the right side of the street, and then there was the Mauser 1898 in everyone's hands.

One by one, the Turkish soldiers fell into the street, but more people swarmed behind.

"! How are these Turkish rabbits so brave! A German veteran on Ollie's side spat in indignation, pulled the pistol, ejected the cartridge case, loaded it, took aim, pulled the trigger, and five seconds later another Turk squirted blood on his head, then fell to the ground and convulsed twice.

Click...... Click......

The only Maxim was actually stuck at this time, and the Turks rushed even more fiercely.

When the Turkish soldiers rushed over a distance of 50 meters, the soldiers of the Oli regiment threw grenades one after another, and suddenly the Turks fell in large pieces, but the people behind did not mean to stop the charge.

"Fight, bayonet!" Ollie shouted the words 'bayonet' very loudly, and the German soldiers' blood boiled all at once, and the blood of Germany began to explode.

"Kill ......"

The Turkish soldiers who rushed to the front saw the appearance of this group of big men and tigers coming down the mountain, and they were so frightened that they were ready to retreat, but the soldiers behind squeezed up again, and they had to bite the bullet.

But how could they be the opponents of these well-trained and experienced German veterans, and in a few minutes dozens of Turkish soldiers fell under the bayonets of Mauser 1898. Finally, the Turks were stopped by their momentum and retreated one after another.

Click......

At the critical moment, the machine gunners finally repaired the Maxim and frantically poured bullets at the retreating Turks.

After driving the destroyer out of range, Ollie's artillery redirected and began firing at the Turks on the pier, and soon the attacking forces east of the pier finally broke through the line and rushed to the pier. Seeing that the tide was turning, the Turkish soldiers on the dock threw down their weapons and raised their hands. If it weren't for the 1,500 soldiers brought by Ozturk, the rest of the "Turkish rabbits" would have surrendered long ago.

In the distance, Ozturk stood at the stern of the destroyer, looking at the burning harbor, and his heart was very heavy. I lost half of my ships this time, and all the soldiers I had worked so hard to train were left to the enemy, and I didn't know what to use to defend Cassandra.

At dusk, the Battle of Thessaloniki came to an end. The 33,000 defenders of the Turkish Third Army were completely annihilated, the Oli regiment lost 63 soldiers and more than 100 wounded, and Kemal's partisans suffered nearly 1,000 casualties, but the capture of Thessaloniki was of great significance for the Turkish revolution.

Half a month later, Rear Admiral Ozturk led all the defenders and ships of the Cassandra fortress to surrender to Kemal's troops.
