Chapter 34: The Fortune Boy
The farmer walked unhurriedly to the fireplace and threw a few chunky sticks of wood into the fire that provided warmth for the room. Outside the window, it was still snowy.
"Thank you very much for your hospitality, Mr. Green, it's time for us to go!" Cullen walked up to the old Englishman and gave a standard British military salute, and the other commandos got up to leave.
"It's so windy and snowy outside, let's wait for the weather to get better before leaving!" The farmer seemed very hospitable, even though Karen and the others were able to dry up their family's food store in a week.
"No! We still have a mission! I hope that the next time I see you, peace has come to this land! Cullen showed a smile that is usually very rare, the wind and snow outside naturally caused inconvenience to the team's walking, but it was also the best time for the commandos to carry out the "scattering of money".
"I hope so!" For the coming war, the farmer prefers to see the war end as soon as possible.
"May God bless you, brave warriors!" Mrs. Green had a cross on one side.
Cullen took one last look at the interesting and pathetic Englishman, and then walked towards the door with a determined face. When the gate opened, a wind and snow poured in, and the commandos suddenly cleared up their spirits. The family just didn't know who they were, they were British after all, and they were Germany's number one enemy until the end of the war.
Winters in England are not particularly cold, with temperatures generally not dropping below -5 degrees, so it seems that Karren and his team have encountered the coldest weather of the year. After a few of the seriously wounded were loaded onto the wagons, the convoy of cars and oxen and wagons set off again, and Cullen intended to scatter the carts to a distance away from the farm, and finally the commandos would march on foot, so as to minimize the traces left behind by the group.
In the Atlantic, Churchill's special fleet was also trying its best to hide its whereabouts.
"Report! A telegram from the Admiralty! The correspondents said as he handed the telegram to Churchill.
After perusing it, Churchill pulled out his lighter and lit the paper, an elusive expression on his face before the orange flame burned out.
"Send a clear telegram to the Admiralty, we will first go to the port of ReykjavΓk, Iceland to replenish the fleet!"
"Yes! Is that a signal to the ships? The Communications Officer asked earnestly.
"No, of course not! We didn't really want to go there! Churchill looked at the somewhat naΓ―ve lieutenant, "Send a signal to the other warships, keep the radio silent from now on, and at the same time order our monitoring room to keep an eye out for radio signals coming from the fleet!" β
After the communications officer had left in a daze, Churchill took his cigar in his mouth and went to the porthole, hoping that the blizzard would not stop until his fleet reached the British mainland, and that the German submarines' field of view would be reduced to a very small point in these sea conditions.
In England, in the western suburbs of London, in a somewhat old barracks, Tobias was escorted by two fierce British special police officers to several British officers dressed in British clothes.
"Name, rank, unit number?" A man in a major's uniform asked.
"Second Lieutenant Tobias of the German Army! Subordinate to the Imperial War Department! Tobias looked blankly at the row of Britons in front of him, the highest of them was a skinny colonel, then a lieutenant colonel and three majors, and next to him sat a guy in black uniform, who seemed to be the head of the so-called British Royal Special Police Force, that is, the group of "hunters" who caught him.
"Troop number!" The British major asked again in an accentuated tone.
"Second Lieutenant Tobias of the German Army! Subordinate to the Imperial War Department! Tobias repeated unceremoniously, his voice not loud as he was far from recovering from fatigue, but his tone was full of indifference and determination.
The British major looked at the colonel sitting in the middle with an inquiring gaze, and then reluctantly gave up the question.
"When and how did you come to England? How many accomplices are there? β
"No comment!" Tobias remained indifferent, his eyes staring straight at the window behind the Englishman, at the white beauty of the world.
"If you want to watch your companions get sent to the gallows one by one!" The black-uniformed guy spoke coldly in English with a Scottish accent, a hoarse voice that displeased Tobias.
Tobias was not the slightest afraid of the intimidation of the British, and from the time he joined the commandos, he was determined to deal with death, and so did his commandos.
"If you dare to do that, I can guarantee you and your men an even more miserable fate after our Imperial army has conquered Britain! Besides, your country now has tens of thousands of army and navy officers and men imprisoned in our German prisoner of war camps! β
The black uniform was a little surprised, and his eyes suddenly became fierce, "It seems that we are going to use some ancient tricks, so you may be able to cooperate!" β
After receiving the acquiescence of the Thin Colonel, the Black Uniform motioned for the two guys who had brought in with Tobias to escort him out again. The mistreatment of prisoners of war was not unique to the British, not to mention the fact that the black-uniformed guy and his men were special police officers who specialized in dealing with criminals, and torture to extract confessions was very common for them. The Englishman waited with a grim smile as he waited for the screams to come from the next room, but unfortunately they were disappointed, and there was nothing but the faint sound of violent limbs striking each other.
Ten minutes later, Tobias, covered in bruises, was escorted back again. After wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth, Tobias still stood in front of the Englishman like a proud knight.
The black uniform frowned, he found himself running into a hard character, but the British major looked very optimistic, "Now can you tell me when you came to England and how many companions you have!" Otherwise, your men will all accept the 'courtesy' you have just received, and I don't think they are as strong as you. In addition, one of your men seems to be suffering from a severe cold and is very ill, and our doctor is examining him, and if he is not treated in time, he may soon be out of this world. You know, thanks to the excellent performance of your navy, we in the UK are running out of medicines! β
"Despicable!" Tobias endured the pain all over his body and gave his own evaluation.
The disgruntled Thin Colonel finally spoke, "Speaking of despicability, your navy's sneak attack on Pascafro, the sneaky attack on our warships with submarines, and your army's brazen invasion of neutral Belgium, you Germans are even more 'excellent' than us in this regard!" β
Tobias didn't respond to this, he didn't bother to respond to this guy who couldn't even tell the difference between tactics and morality.
After a while, the thin colonel changed his "amiable" expression, "Alright, Second Lieutenant Tobias, let's make a deal." If you are very cooperative in answering our questions, how about we can heal that one of your men and provide food to your people? β
Speaking of food, Tobias realized that he had not eaten since the night before, and that even the pain from his body could not completely satisfy his hunger, and the situation must have been even worse for the German soldiers who had suffered minor injuries and colds.
After thinking for a long time, Tobias gritted his teeth, "If you heal my soldiers first and provide them with food and warmth, I can consider answering some of your questions!" β
Several British officers deliberated in a whisper, and finally the Thin Colonel announced the decision, "We can heal your companions and provide them with bread and blankets, but if you break your promise, we will not be able to guarantee their lives!" β
"Agreed!" Tobias sneered in his heart, his answer was that the British had no way to verify the authenticity in a short time, and it would not be long before the British would have no time to interrogate themselves.
"Very good!" The thin colonel gave a few words to an officer next to him, and the man left the room.
"You can rest assured that we are absolutely trustworthy! Now you can answer our questions honestly! After the thin colonel finished speaking, the previous major resumed his questioning.
"Name, rank, unit number?"
"Second Lieutenant Tobias of the German Army! Special forces directly under the Imperial War Department! "Actually, Tobias was part of the airborne forces of the German 8th Army, but the British would not have known the real situation without making great efforts on this point.
The British major made a quick note in his notebook, while the thin colonel held his chin thoughtfully, and the black uniform didn't seem to be good at military things, and he listened with a blank face.
"When and how did you come to England? How many accomplices are there? β
Tobias didn't think much about it, but replied naturally, "We came to the sea near Brighton on the night of December 1 in a submarine, and then I and the 31 soldiers I took left the submarine and swam to the beach and passed through the Brighton Beach defense!" In the battle with you, 15 of us were killed, and the remaining 16 were all captured by you! β
The thin colonel's palm suddenly slapped the table, "Lie! Brighton Beach is heavily defended, how can you easily get past it! β
Tobias was unfazed, he pointed to his military uniform, "Don't forget, my people and I are wearing British uniforms!" β
The puffed British colonel had to glare at Tobias until his major pointed out the suspicions, and he did not regain his excitement.
"Do you have any other companions? As far as we know, while you are holding back our reinforcements to the vault, there are also a large number of accomplices attacking the vault and carrying gold! β
"I'm sorry, but my people and I are just in charge of blocking it. Others came to the UK by other means, and my superiors wouldn't have let me know about them. As for their number, as far as I know, no less than 500 people! After saying that, Tobias looked at the surprised exchange of ears in front of these Englishmen, and secretly laughed in his heart, these Englishmen did not seem to be very good at distinguishing the real from the fake.
In the end, the British seemed to be more than satisfied with the fact that 500 German soldiers had managed to capture a vault guarded by more than 400 British troops. For an ordinary robbery gang, an infantry battalion has an absolute deterrent, but unfortunately this time there are too many "robbers", and they are too strong.
"And where did they evacuate after they managed to capture the vault?" Colonel Thin asked impatiently.
"I'm sorry, but the order given to us by our superiors is to hold off and withdraw when the troops attacking the vault are successful. As for their movements, the superiors did not inform us for safety reasons. If you were the commander of this operation, you probably wouldn't have shared such important information with a blocking force! β
Tobias's rhetorical question once again left the thin colonel speechless.
"I see this German has been fighting with us haha!" The guy in the black uniform said coldly.
"It's a pity that I can't produce any evidence to prove my words right now, if you don't believe me, I think it's better to end this inquiry!" Tobias calmly let the black uniform eat a "fly".
"Go ahead!" The skinny colonel scratched his head and let the major who asked the question move on to other questions.
"When is the German army scheduled to attack Britain?"
"Uh...... Maybe today, maybe tomorrow, people with low military rank like me won't know about this problem, maybe even my superiors won't know! The first half of Tobias's sentence is true, but his immediate boss is the first German "acting crown prince" who is ready to lead his troops to the British mainland.
"What is the purpose of your robbery?"
"Sorry! We soldiers are only responsible for carrying out orders and never ask why. Presumably the same is true of your army! β
It can be seen that the British are both helpless and invulnerable to Tobias's answer.
"After you completed the blocking mission, where did you plan to retreat? How do I liaise with other troops? β
"Our mission is to stop it, after which we just need to find a place to hide until the main force lands before we can carry out sabotage. Since yesterday, we have stopped contacting our superiors. If the German army had not landed, we would have been completely abandoned in England, and we would probably have to live by looting in the future! Tobias said with a sad look, as if they had really been abandoned.
"Nonsense!" The thin colonel jumped up angrily, he didn't see the clues in Tobias's words, but these answers were far from satisfying his superiors, but they only caught such a low-ranking German officer after all.
"By my life, what I say is the truth!" Tobias would rather lose his life than tarnish the honor of the Imperial Army.
"Take him down first!" The thin colonel waved his hand dejectedly, and his men escorted Tobias, covered in wounds, back to where the commandos were being held.
"I'll leave it to you, interrogate every German!" The thin colonel turned to the black uniform and said, "In addition, send people to cooperate with us in the pursuit of the Germans who attacked the vault, and we must capture everyone as soon as possible!" β
"That's nature!" Black Uniform replied with a smug face, arrest and interrogation were his forte.
Despite their confidence, the Blacks had no idea where the German commandos were going to attack the vault, thanks in large part to the successful resistance of Tobias's men.
While Tobias and his soldiers huddled in blankets and feasted on a pitiful little bread, Cullen and the gold-laden commandos were staggering through the snowstorm.
"There's a small town ahead, let's go there and 'scatter money'!" Captain Xie Ding, who was at the front of the line, stopped breathlessly, the binoculars in his hand quickly blurred by snowflakes, and a small English town was about a mile ahead of the group. Their two cars, which had been abandoned by them a short time ago because they had run out of fuel, and the oxen and horse-drawn carts had been driven to the woods by the roadside, and now they had become a full-foot team, and even heavy machine guns had been thrown into the roadside creek in order to lose weight. Now the burden of the team is only the few gold in the backpacks of the commandos, and the few seriously wounded lying on stretchers in the middle and back of the team, and the speed of travel is barely enough.
"I think we'd better get a new uniform, or find a place to wash our clothes! The way we look now, we look like we've experienced a fierce battle, and it's really easy to arouse the suspicion of others! Once again, Halim suggested to Cullen, the most professional soldier, who was more concerned about his appearance.
As a professional spy, Cullen considered the possibility of action, "Now that the British troops everywhere are on alert, it is obviously unrealistic to go to the barracks to grab clothes, as for washing clothes, second lieutenant, we must first distribute this gold, and then find a safe place." We don't have much medicine either, and it's a shame we didn't find much of it in the vault! β
Hayrim turned his head to look at Karen's injured arm and nodded sympathetically, "If we can't find medicine in that town in front of us, then it can only be said that our naval blockade is too successful!" β
After coming to the edge of the town, the commandos found that it was a very quiet town, there was hardly a single figure on the street, few shops were open, and fortunately, the chimneys of the houses were smoking, so it did not give people a dead silence. Even in the open shops, the thickly dressed men only glanced at the somewhat disheveled team from a distance, and then moved back to the stove.
"What a harmonious tranquility! It's been a beautiful winter! Cullen couldn't help but sigh, "It's a pity that the people here will soon be bothered by gold!" β
Soon, gold bricks appeared in the corners of the streets, in front of the doors, in some remote but not difficult places to see, and the heavy snow soon dressed the gold in white, until someone stepped on it, kicked it, or cleared the snow, and these things reappeared brilliantly golden yellow.
At that time, this winter will not be as cold as it is now.
