Section 23 Crises (I)
When the lookout saw the eight white minelines and issued a torpedo attack alarm, the eight "Swordfish" torpedoes were already less than 500 meters away from the "Kaga", and for a torpedo sailing at a speed of 35 knots, 500 meters was only 30 seconds, and this was only enough for the "Kaga" to turn 40 degrees, or sail 400 meters, and it was impossible to avoid the attack of these eight torpedoes.
The first torpedo hit the bow of the "Kaga", and the shock wave generated by the explosion shook the gunners of the two anti-aircraft gun positions on the port side of the bow into the sea, and at the same time left a large hole with a diameter of more than 3 meters on the port side of the aircraft carrier more than 20 meters away from the bow, and the sea water quickly poured into the bow compartment. The second torpedo was concentrated on the port side of the aircraft carrier, however, this torpedo did not explode! The third torpedo concentrated in the stern of the carrier, and the explosion shattered both anti-aircraft guns in the aft port side, as well as the propeller shaft in the port side stern of the carrier.
At this time, four "Ospreys" attacked from the starboard side of the "Kaga", but three of them were shot down before the torpedo was dropped, and the last one, although it dropped its torpedo, was shot down by the "Zero" when it also broke away from the bombing channel, and the surrendered torpedo did not hit the target.
Almost simultaneously, the last four "Kingfishers" reached the skies over the "Kaga". These were four dive bombers led by Captain Yang Qinkai, squadron leader of the 1st Dive Bomber Squadron. Before that, the "Zero Battle" responsible for intercepting dive bombers had gone to deal with other fighters. Yang Qinkai took three other "Kingfishers" to take this opportunity to come to the sky over the "Kaga". Before the Japanese "Zero Battle" had time to intercept it, four "Kingfishers" almost simultaneously dived down towards the "Kaga" on the sea.
When the Kingfisher entered the dive channel, there were almost no fighters to intercept it, and the anti-aircraft guns of the Japanese battleships could hardly threaten these bombers diving down at high speed. This time, the lookout on the "Kaga" immediately spotted the bomber that was diving down from above it, and immediately raised the alarm.
After the torpedo attack of the "Kaga", the speed had been sharply reduced to 24 knots, and the steering gear on the left side was jammed, and the maneuverability of the aircraft carrier was greatly affected, and it was able to maintain course only by relying on the right rudder, and the steering speed was reduced by at least half. More seriously, the aircraft carrier has begun ****, that is, it is impossible to quickly evade the attack of dive bombers.
Four bombs fell from the sky, and Yang Qinkai pulled them up at the last moment, and the anti-aircraft shells flew near his fighters, and the "Zero Battle" that followed close was unlucky and was shot down by the anti-aircraft artillery on his own battleship. The "Kingfisher" piloted by Yang Qinkai successfully escaped the catastrophe, and then left the sky over the Japanese fleet at maximum speed. Yang Qinkai didn't even have time to take a look at the results.
The other three "Kingfishers" were not so lucky, one of them was immediately bitten by a "Zero Battle" because it was pulled up too early, and became a victim, while the other two "Kingfishers" chose the wrong course when pulling up, and were enveloped by anti-aircraft fire from a nearby heavy cruiser, and none of them managed to get out of the battle.
However, three of the bombs dropped by the four "Kingfishers" directly hit the "Kaga", and the other exploded less than 20 meters from the "Kaga". Yang Qinkai had no way of determining the outcome of the battle, but by the time the bomber group left the skies over the Japanese fleet, smoke was already rising from the "Kaga".
After all the bombers left the interception range of the Japanese fleet's air defense fighters, Luo Jinming led the remaining seven "Sparrowhawks" to get rid of the "entanglement" of the Japanese fighters and fly to the southwest. By this time, Major Zhang Naiding had already sent back the results of the bombing by telegram. Of course, there is a lot of moisture in this "result".
When Tan Renhao saw the telegram, he couldn't believe that the first wave of bombing had already "destroyed" three Japanese aircraft carriers, including two heavy aircraft carriers. And the telegram also stated that all three aircraft carriers were sinking. In addition, two Japanese heavy cruisers were sunk. The first wave of bombers lost 5 fighters, 19 dive bombers, as well as 21 torpedo bombers. Compared to the results achieved, this loss is nothing at all.
By this time, the second wave of bombers had already completed their formation over the fleet and was preparing for a second round of attacks on the Japanese fleet. Tan Renhao hesitated, is it necessary to launch a second round of attacks? Still, 24 fighters should be left behind for a possible attack. What annoyed him even more was that neither Zhang Naiding nor Luo Jinming mentioned in the telegram whether there were fighters on the aircraft carriers of the Japanese fleet and how fierce the air defense interception was. This made it impossible for him to judge whether the Japanese fleet had already sent a bomber group.
"Renhao, the second wave of bombers is ready, do you want them to continue the attack?"
Tan Renhao glanced at Lei Shaoqing, he hesitated slightly, and then nodded. "Let them go, at least we have to prove that the Japanese Southwestern Fleet is finished. Also, let the 'Li Jing' turn on the radar and search the surrounding airspace! ”
"Turn on the radar?" Lei Shaoqing was stunned, isn't this taking the initiative to expose his position?
"Yes, turn on the radar!" Tan Renhao sighed, "Colonel Luo Jinming didn't mention that there were bombers on the Japanese aircraft carrier, and they should not have been intercepted by many Japanese fighters, otherwise it would be impossible to easily achieve such a big result." In other words, maybe the Japanese fleet has already sent a group of attack aircraft and is now flying towards us! ”
Lei Shaoqing was stunned for a moment, and immediately asked someone to notify the "Li Jing". Two cruisers of the Fifth Fleet were equipped with radars, and the "Li Jing" was one of them. And according to the tests, the radar was able to detect fighters up to 30 nautical miles away, and the detection range of bomber groups reached 50 nautical miles. This made it possible to give the fleet at least 15 minutes of air defense preparation time, which was enough for fighters on the aircraft carrier to rise into the air.
As soon as the radar on the "Li Jing" was turned on, dense light spots appeared on the display screen, and the radar operator at first thought that the radar was malfunctioning, and this kind of radar only equipped by the Imperial Navy did often malfunction, but he soon discovered that this was not a malfunction, and those light spots were signals from enemy planes!
The air defense sirens sounded immediately, and this time, without Tan Renhao's order, the fighters who stayed on the three aircraft carriers immediately took off.
