Section 13 The Siege of Akagi (I)
The "Canglong" is finished. This is not only Deng Zichao's idea, but also Nanyun Yizhong's idea.
The "Soryu" class ("Soryu" and "Wyvern") aircraft carriers are the first class of standard fast fleet aircraft carriers built by Japan. At the design stage, the experience summed up on several previous aircraft carriers was directly adopted. However, at the time of the construction of the "Soryu", Japan only had 20,000 tons of aircraft carrier construction tonnage, and the "Matsue Treaty" had not yet been abolished at that time. Therefore, the Japanese side has made a fuss about the displacement of 20,000 tons, that is, to ensure that the aircraft carrier can carry enough fighters, and to be equipped with a large number of artillery pieces (even large-caliber sea-facing main guns), and to emphasize the survivability of the aircraft carrier. This is obviously a difficult task to accomplish. Later, the number of carrier aircraft was reduced to 72 (exactly three brigades according to the composition of the Japanese naval aviation), and at the same time there was no longer a requirement for 203-mm heavy guns (this was the standard main gun on Japanese heavy cruisers). However, with the level of Japanese ship design, especially the technical level of the power system, it is obviously very difficult to ensure that 72 combat aircraft can be installed in a displacement of 20,000 tons, and that they must be able to reach a speed of 35 knots, and be equipped with a large amount of ammunition, fuel, and anti-aircraft artillery. As a result, the "Canglong" could only reduce its armored defenses and did not adopt an ammunition depot and oil depot with a compartmentalized design, which sacrificed the survivability of the battleship.
The "Soryu" that was hit by 6 torpedoes and 6 bombs was not saved, and even if it did not sink for the time being, with the degree of damage and the speed at which it entered the water, I am afraid that this aircraft carrier would not be able to return to the Japanese port at all. However, just when Nagumo was heartbroken about the "Soryu", those bombers who had not yet dropped their ammunition had already locked their eyes on Nagumo Kazutada's flagship "Akagi".
The Akagi was the largest aircraft carrier of the Japanese Navy at that time. It was originally one of the battle cruisers of the Amagi class. However, after the end of World War I, Japan could no longer afford to build more capital ships, and with the entry into force of the Treaty of Matsue, Japan's capital ship tonnage had exceeded the maximum limit of the treaty. As a result, the "Akagi" was in danger of being dismantled. Later, after the economy recovered a little, Japan immediately decided to convert the "Akagi" into an aircraft carrier, so that the hull that had already been built could not be wasted, and at the same time it could quickly form an aviation combat force.
It was also a very famous battleship, Japan's first fast fleet aircraft carrier. However, the experience of this aircraft carrier was also very tortuous. In the beginning, there were three flight decks on the aircraft carrier, which was obviously a very stupid design. Afterward. The "Akagi" underwent a major overhaul, mainly by dismantling the three-tier flight deck and turning it into an all-access flight deck. And in the last pre-war improvement, the 203-mm naval guns were dismantled and replaced with twin 127-mm anti-aircraft guns. After the Battle of Jeju Island, the "Chiseong" underwent comprehensive repairs, and at the same time, more than 30 25-mm machine guns were added, and the anti-aircraft fire of the aircraft carrier was significantly strengthened.
At the same time, this is also a very famous battleship. Admiral Yamamoto, commander of Japan's Combined Fleet, served as a captain on this aircraft carrier for two years. Although this did not change Yamamoto's superstition about battleships (which was an important reason why Japan still insisted on building the "Yamato"-class battleships after the outbreak of the war), Yamamoto also gained a deep understanding of aviation operations during his time as captain of the "Akagi". Later, Yamamoto 65 planned a plan to attack Naha Port with aircraft carriers as the core force and destroy the most powerful First Fleet of the Tang Empire, which was formed when he was the captain of the "Akagi".
However, the current "Akagi" is facing the test of life and death. When the "Canglong" was blown into a sea of fire, nearly half of the bombers did not drop ammunition. And Deng Zichao's eyes were directly locked on the "Akagi" behind the "Canglong". Then he began to direct the bombers to launch an attack on the "Akagi".
The first to fly over the "Akagi" were 12 "Kingfishers". These bombers have been circling over the battlefield for 5 minutes, and they are not carrying much fuel, if they are not able to attack the aircraft carrier within 5 minutes, then they will have to bomb the escort warships on the periphery, otherwise the remaining fuel will not be able to guarantee their return to their carrier fleet.
The 12 "Kingfishers" were divided into three groups and arrived over the "Akagi" like a flock of geese. The first 4 immediately began to dive. Escorting the "Akagi" were the heavy cruisers "Takaya" and "Maya". Both heavy cruisers pretended to have a large number of anti-aircraft guns, especially the twin 127-mm anti-aircraft guns, which had an elevation angle of 85 degrees, which could completely cover the sky over the "Akagi". And the anti-aircraft firepower on the "Akagi" is not at all worse than that of the heavy cruiser, thanks to its huge hull and a displacement of almost 40,000 tons (in comparison, the "Soryu" class aircraft carrier cannot be equipped with so many anti-aircraft guns). As a result, none of the first 4 "Kingfishers" were able to complete the attack, and only one withdrew from the battle after hastily dropping bombs.
The second batch of four "Kingfishers" did not flinch in front of the heavy anti-aircraft fire of the Japanese battleships, but followed one after the other. The first two were quickly shot down, but the two that followed dropped their bombs without incident. The "Akagi" also immediately turned to the left, preparing to avoid the falling bombs. However, this also made it difficult for the anti-aircraft artillery on the aircraft carrier to lock on to the targets in the air, and it was difficult to deal with the last four "Kingfishers".
All four of the last four Kingfishers dropped bombs, and only one was shot down by anti-aircraft artillery when it was changed. And after successfully avoiding the first two bombs, the "Akagi" was no longer able to avoid the bombs that fell immediately after. Two of the four 500-kilogram armor-piercing shells hit the "Chicheng". The first left a large hole in the middle of the flight deck with a diameter of more than ten meters, and at the same time blew the hangar below to pieces, while the second bomb that hit the rear elevator fell directly into the engine room below, but this bomb did not explode!
When he was shot, Nagumo Yizhong and the staff officers in the bridge command were all shocked and flew away, and many people immediately lost consciousness, and many more were injured to varying degrees. However, this is not the most important thing, because the bombing of the "Akagi" has only just begun.
