Chapter 8: The Old Man of the Dust: I Think, Therefore I Am (4)

.

The old man sat on the futon, picked up the teapot, and took a sip.

From time to time, the mountain breeze blows from the peak of Qinggeng Mountain, gently blowing the Bodhi tree in the courtyard outside the window, and the rustling sound is like the whispering of children. The sky is light and the wind is light, and the cool sunlight shines obliquely through the gaps in the leaves of the linden tree, falling on the floor of the prayer hall under the root of the window, mottled, and slowly moving forward, like a few golden butterflies with irregular shapes and quietly crawling.

The scripture hall was very quiet, and all the disciples listened carefully, figuring out the mystery of the master's speech just now, or those who had comprehended it, couldn't help but show joy.

The old man looked at everyone and saw that all the disciples were very quiet, so he asked, "Next, who will ask the question, let's continue to discuss and discuss what you have learned in your daily life during this time, consolidate what you have learned, and apply what you have learned, so as to achieve the unity of knowledge and action." ”

A slender and handsome-looking half-grown child stood up timidly and asked respectfully: "Master, I am very interested in 'military science', and I have admiration for those heroic generals who have been shrouded in horse leather and iron horses in the past and present, so I think that when I grow up in the future, I can be like Huo Quai, holding a long knife, leading ten thousand horses, driving straight into the desert, stepping on the Huns, becoming a young general, and going to the world in another world to make contributions, so, hehe, Master...... So I want to know what I should do if the enemy has hundreds of thousands of troops, and we have only 10,000 or 20,000 or less? I want to know what kind of laws or tactics are followed in those cases where the weak defeat the strong. ”

"Well, Changfeng apprentice, I like military studies, I want to become a young general, make meritorious contributions, and have this ambition, it's very good. So, let's talk about it briefly. Sun Tzu said in the Art of War: Those who can win because of the enemy's changes are called gods! When we command a campaign, we need to follow the ten major military principles:

1. Fight the scattered and isolated enemy first, and then the concentrated and powerful enemy.

2. Take small cities, medium-sized cities and large rural areas, and then take large cities.

3. The main goal is to annihilate the enemy's living forces, and not to defend or seize cities and places. The defense or seizure of cities and places is the result of the annihilation of the enemy's living forces, and it often takes many times to defend or capture them.

4. Concentrate absolutely superior forces (two, three, four, and sometimes even five or six times the enemy's strength) in each battle, encircle the enemy on all sides, and strive to completely annihilate the enemy without slipping through the net.

5. We should not fight unprepared battles or uncertain battles, but strive to be prepared for every battle, and strive to have the certainty of victory in the face of the comparison of the conditions of the enemy and ourselves.

6. Promote the style of fighting bravely, not afraid of sacrifice, not afraid of fatigue, and fighting continuously (i.e., fighting several battles in quick succession without resting in a short period of time).

7. Strive to annihilate the enemy in motion. At the same time, focus on positional attack tactics and capture enemy strongholds and cities.

8. In the matter of siege, all strongholds and cities that are weakly defended by the enemy shall be resolutely taken. All strongholds and cities where the enemy has a moderate degree of garrison and the environment allows them to be captured, take them. All strongholds and cities that the enemy is defending are to wait for the conditions to be ripe and then take them.

9. Replenish yourself by capturing all the enemy's weapons and most of the man. The source of our army's manpower and material resources is mainly on the battlefield, turning the enemy into its own use, and strengthening itself while weakening the enemy.

10. Be good at taking advantage of the gap between two battles to rest and retrain the army. The time to recuperate, in general, should not be too long, so as not to give the enemy time to breathe as much as possible. ”

The old man stood up, paced a few steps on the podium, waved his sleeves, and said calmly like a general who has strategized to win a decisive victory: "The above ten military principles, in a nutshell, are based on military dialectics, and flexibility is their essence. In layman's terms, you fight yours, I fight mine, if you win, you fight, and if you don't win, you leave. It is necessary to despise the enemy strategically, attach importance to the enemy tactically, not be afraid of any enemy, but also not despise one's own opponent, and create corresponding combat methods according to the enemy's combat characteristics, so that the enemy can be defeated. 'Take what you want, and you will hold on to it.' or abandon cattle and horses and flee falsely, or hide the spirit to show weakness, or deceive and ambush, or sneak and ask for peace, all of them tempt me to benefit. The above four sentences, also known as the 'Four Tips for Showing Weakness', are the general outline for the study of the art of war for the teacher. For example, guerrilla tactics can apply the 16-character principle of 'the enemy advances and we retreat, the enemy is stationed and we disturb, the enemy is tired and we fight, and the enemy retreats and we pursue'; and the campaign tactics can use the 16-character principle of 'advancing and retreating in great strides, luring the enemy into depth, concentrating troops, and breaking through each one.'" These two 16-character principles can be flexibly applied to the battlefield according to the enemy's situation. Remember, the command strategy of war cannot be confined to books, of course,...... For a specific example of defeating the strong with the weak, we can refer to the mythical Northern Expedition led by Chen Qingzhi with 7,000 white-robed troops - 'Whoever takes thirty-two cities; Forty-seven battles, all directions'. ”

The old man looked up at the window, watching the changes in the clouds, his thoughts seemed to have returned to those fiery years, and he said softly to himself, "Famous teachers and generals are not imprisoned, and thousands of troops avoid white robes!"

"Master, Master, that Chen Qingzhi is so powerful!" Changfeng and the rest of the disciples couldn't help but show admiration.

The old man walked down from the podium, stood in front of a smaller child, gently slapped the child's head with a ring ruler, and said warmly: "Little apprentice Fanxiang, you are not paying attention again, listen carefully." ”

The little boy named Fanxiang was beaten, raised his head, smiled at the master, no longer looked around, and hurriedly said: "Yes, master, I will listen carefully, and in the future, I will become a big general like Senior Brother Changfeng, and go to another world to make contributions, hehe." He flipped to the third page of a military book in front of him and began to read it pretendly.

"Hey, you're too naughty, you can't help it, next time you don't pay attention, the teacher will punish you for the board. Looking at this very smart but naughty little apprentice, the old man patted the ring ruler lightly in the palm of his left hand, his tone couldn't help but be aggravated, shook his head, returned to the podium, stomped back and forth a few square steps, looked at the wind blowing and shaking the leaves outside the window, and his thoughts seemed to return to the battlefield of those iron horses and glaciers a long time ago.

"Yes, there are many examples of defeating the strong with the weak, such as the battle between the ancient Yellow Emperor and Chiyou, or the battle of Goujian's three thousand Yuejia swallowing Wu, or the battle of the overlord of Western Chu, after you come down, study carefully...... Sit down, Changfeng apprentice. ”

"Okay, thank you, Master, I will definitely study hard. Changfeng bowed deeply to Master and sat down on the floor.

The old man came back from his distant thoughts, his tone was calm, calm, and indifferent.
