Chapter 058: No. 2 Tragic Strategist Tian Feng

If Fu Zhu is the number one tragic figure in Yuan Shao's group, Tian Feng is undoubtedly the second tragic figure after him, and Fu Zhu at least died directly at the hands of his enemy Cao Cao, while Tian Feng was simply killed by his own monarch Yuan Shao.

【Honest Tian Feng】

In history, Tian Feng was an upright person, and he just made a mistake, and he couldn't tolerate a little sand in his eyes, so his career was not very smooth sailing.

According to the record of "The Behavior of the Ancestors", Tian Feng was smart since he was a child, and he was bereaved when he was a teenager. And Tian Feng is erudite and talented, very famous in Jizhou, initially by the Taiwei Mansion to conquer, recommended as Maocai, and later was elected as the imperial history, because of resentment of the eunuchs in power, virtuous ministers were killed, so he abandoned the official and returned home.

Soon, Tian Feng became a subordinate of Jizhou Mu Hanfu, but he was discouraged because of his integrity.

Then Yuan Shao rose and seized Han Fu's Jizhou, he heard about Tian Feng's prestige, so he brought valuable gifts, and recruited Tian Feng very humbly.

But because Tian Feng was too upright and offended many people, Feng Ji, another strategist under Yuan Shao, looked down on Tian Feng very much, and said bad things about Tian Feng in front of Yuan Shao several times, so Yuan Shao gradually began to alienate Tian Feng.

In history, Yuan Shao defeated Gongsun Zhan, and Tian Feng also contributed a lot. But Tian Feng's personality is indeed a little too straight.

Tian Feng asked Yuan Shao to take the opportunity to send troops to fight on the occasion of Cao Cao's crusade against Liu Bei, but Yuan Shao refused on the grounds that his son was sick, but Tian Feng got up and said directly: "Cough, the big thing is over!" It's hard to catch up with such an opportunity, but I lost the opportunity because of the child's illness, but it's a pity! After Yuan Shao found out, he was very angry.

Then Cao Cao defeated Liu Bei, Yuan Shao instead prepared to go south, Tian Feng thought that the time had passed, so he dissuaded Yuan Shao from sending troops, and instead supported the protracted war strategy of Fu Xiang, but Yuan Shao did not listen, as a result, Tian Feng did not let go of this matter, Yuan Shao was furious, and simply put him in prison.

In the end, Tian Feng, who offended Yuan Shao miserably, was killed by Yuan Shao, who returned from a fiasco in Guandu.

[The proposition of protracted war]

Historically, both Fu Zhu and Tian Feng opposed Yuan Shao's direct fight with Cao Cao to the death, and favored a protracted war with him, first slowly weakening his power and destroying him in one fell swoop.

It is described in the Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms, in which Yuan Shao's biography of Yuan Shao mentioned this idea to Yuan Shao after Yuan Shao crossed the river, while Tian Feng had already begun to strongly oppose Yuan Shao's preparation for the south, and was eventually imprisoned by Yuan Shao.

In other words, Tian Feng may have already mentioned the idea of protracted war before he was frustrated.

However, in the "Biography of Emperor Xian", it is recorded that Fu Zhu and Tian Feng advised Yuan Shao together, advocating a long-term war with Cao Cao, and in the "Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms", Tian Feng also advised Yuan Shao not to go south, and after a protracted war with Cao Cao, it is also recorded that Yuan Shao thought that Tian Feng was a henchman of Fu Zhu.

In the "Book of the Later Han Dynasty" and "Zizhi Tongjian", which are important collection materials of later generations, it is believed that Fu Zhu first advised Yuan Shao not to go south, and first put forward the argument of protracted war, and later Tian Feng supported Fu Zhu's views and re-expounded Yuan Shao.

On the whole, Tian Feng should have put forward the idea of a protracted war against Cao Cao no earlier than Fu Zhi in history.

【Qi Zheng Match】

Tian Feng is often considered a conservative because he supports the protracted war strategy of Fu Zhi, but in fact Tian Feng is a very good strategist, and he is also very bold in terms of strategy, but he is not blindly adventurous.

Before Tian Feng stopped Yuan Shao from going south, in fact, it was Tian Feng who first explicitly asked Yuan Shao to lead his army south to crusade against Cao Cao, when Cao Cao sent troops to attack Zhang Xiu in Nanyang, and was fighting with Zhang Xiu and Liu Biao's reinforcements, Tian Feng asked Yuan Shao to take the opportunity to send troops to Xuchang to recapture the Son of Heaven.

At that time, Yuan Shao tried to negotiate peace with Gongsun Chan in the north, but was ruthlessly rejected by Gongsun Chan, so Yuan Shao finally failed to go south, and chose to completely eliminate Gongsun Chan first and sweep away the threat from the rear.

Faced with the threat of Gongsun Zhan, a strong enemy in the north, Tian Feng dared to persuade Yuan Shao to go south to crusade against Cao Cao, and it can be seen that Tian Feng has a lot of courage in his calculations.

Then Liu Bei betrayed Cao Cao and entered Xuzhou again, Cao Cao personally led his army to Xuzhou after the "Cloth Belt Edict" incident, preparing to defeat Liu Bei first, so Tian Feng thought that this was another good opportunity to crusade against Cao Cao. But Yuan Shao was slow to react and finally missed this opportunity.

That is, in history, Tian Feng had twice persuaded Yuan Shao to seize the opportunity to send troops before Yuan Shao waved his army south, but unfortunately Yuan Shao didn't listen.

Later, Cao Cao defeated Liu Bei and returned, Yuan Shao was ready to send troops, and Tian Feng agreed with Fu Zhu's point of view and dissuaded Yuan Shao from going south, but in the end he sent himself to prison.

On the whole, Tian Feng's use of Qi is in harmony, and Qi is the first.

【Knowing Fate and Dying】

After Yuan Shao's failure in Guandu, many people in Jizhou thought that Tian Feng would be reused, but Tian Feng himself didn't see it that way, he had followed Yuan Shao for almost ten years, and he knew very well what kind of man his lord Yuan Shao was.

Tian Feng knew that if Yuan Shao won, he might not die, but if Yuan Shao lost, then he would definitely die if he had the name of foresight. But Tian Feng had no regrets, and when he knew that he had no possibility of success, he still dissuaded Yuan Shao like an egg hitting a stone, hoping that Yuan Shao would avoid this inevitable failure, but unfortunately it was useless.

But the sad thing is that Cao Cao put a big stone in his heart after knowing that Yuan Shao put Tian Feng in prison, and even after defeating Yuan Shao, he thought that if Tian Feng was in his own hands, he might not be able to defeat Yuan Shao.

And Yuan Shao finally ordered Tian Feng to be executed under Feng Ji.

Frustration was given to Guo Tu, Tian Fengzhi was given to Fengji, and the two top strategists in the Yuan Shao Group ended their lives in this way.

From 198 to 200, Yuan Shao was persuaded twice to take the opportunity to crusade against Cao Cao, but Yuan Shao did not listen, and then forcibly prevented Yuan Shao from going south, was imprisoned, and Yuan Shao was executed after failure

General comment: Like Fu Zhu, because he is Yuan Shao's subordinate, Tian Feng's life is full of cups.

Note: Tian Feng used the strategy three times, the first time because of the threat of Gongsun Zhan, so it was a bit too risky, although the second time was correct, but in that case it was not a very clever strategy, and the third time to stop Yuan Shao from sending troops was also a continuation of frustration, so overall Tian Feng was a qualified strategist, but still not a top strategist.
