Zeng Tzu said: Filial piety has three grades. The first-class filial piety is to be able to shine on the father, the second-class filial piety is not to disgrace the reputation of the parents, and the third-class filial piety is to be able to support the parents. Zengzi's student Gong Mingyi asked Zengzi: Teacher, can you say that you have achieved filial piety? Zengzi replied: Where is that? What are the words! The so-called filial piety of a gentleman is to do what his parents want to do without waiting for his parents to express something, and at the same time he can reassure his parents that everything he does is in line with the right path. I can just support my parents, how can I say that I have achieved filial piety!
Zeng Tzu said: His body is the remains of his parents. Do you dare to be careless with the remains of your parents to do things? If you don't pay attention to your daily life, you are not filial; If you are not loyal to the monarch, you are unfilial; When doing things, it is child's play, that is, unfilial piety; Talking to friends doesn't count, it's unfilial; If you are not brave in battle, you are not filial. These five aspects can't be done, on the surface, it seems that they are being punished, but in fact, they are harming the remains of their parents, from this point of view, dare not be careful! With delicious food and sacrifices when the year is old, this cannot be counted as filial piety, but can only be counted as raising.
The so-called filial piety of the gentleman is admired and applauded by the whole country: It is really blessed to have such a son's father and mother! This is the so-called filial piety. The root of all kinds of morality is called filial piety, and the manifestation of behavior is called nurturing. Even if it can be done, it is difficult to respect; Even if respect can be done, it is difficult without reluctance; Even if it can be done without reluctance, it is difficult to persist after the death of a parent. After the death of parents, they can also carefully use the remains of their parents to act, and do not cause their parents to be criticized, which is called lifelong filial piety.
The so-called benevolence is to be benevolent in filial piety; The so-called rite is to fulfill the word filial piety; The so-called righteousness is to do things that are suitable for filial piety; The so-called faith is to be honest in filial piety; The so-called hard work is to strive to make a fuss about filial piety. Joy arises from acting in accordance with filial piety, and punishment is caused by acting in violation of filial piety. Zeng Zi said: filial piety as a virtue, erected can stand up to the sky, flat can cover the four seas, passed on to future generations are also pursued by people forever, and are not subject to geographical restrictions, to promote to the East China Sea is the criterion, to the West Sea is the criterion, to promote the South China Sea is the criterion, to promote the North Sea is also the criterion.
