Chapter Twenty-Eight: Tragedy Strikes
After completing the prayers, the tribesmen returned to their places around the campfire and returned to normalcy, sitting around talking and laughing, sharing all kinds of anecdotes and the harvest of the day's hard work.
Several young tribal girls, holding hands, rotated in circles around the bonfire and danced hula. Perhaps out of welcome to Katyusha, one of them left the dance floor and walked straight up to her, bowing and inviting her to join in the dance.
Amid the hammering of the wooden drums and the cheers of the audience, Katyusha quickly followed the rhythm of several dance partners, twisting her body, full of excitement and joy, singing and dancing with everyone, letting the breath of youth and vitality bloom into the night sky of the bonfire dance with the rising sparks.
The next morning, when the group had just woken up from their tents, the guide was communicating with the chief, informing him that he needed to leave today and continue on his way, full of gratitude for the hospitality.
The chief ordered some of his people to bring two wooden barrels of water to wash them, and cut off a large piece of freshly cooked wildebeest meat, which was wrapped in wide plantain leaves. As a parting gift, it was handed over to the guide.
At last night's bonfire, the little boy who had eaten Hugh's berries walked over with her sister. The boy held a necklace of unknown fruit seeds in his hand and brought it to Hugh, who took the gift, took out two pieces of chocolate from his pocket, tore off the wrapper, and put it to his mouth to make a bite motion to indicate that it was edible food. Then he handed it to the boy, patted the boy's head, and the other party grinned happily, then ran away with a puff of smoke, hiding behind a wooden house, and looking around.
The girl held the straw hat she had knitted with her own hands and handed it to Katyusha. Katyusha bent down, squatted in front of her, took the gift from the girl's hand, and with a warm smile, gently stroked the girl's face to express her gratitude.
"It's getting late, let's go!" The guide packed his bags and walked over to remind.
"Yes, on our behalf, like the chief and his people, I would like to extend my sincere greetings and thank them for their hospitality." Hugh said to the guide.
He thanked the chieftain, and saw that the other party showed a smile of relief and kindness, leading the people behind him, facing the early morning sun, watching the distant visitors gradually disappear on the horizon.
A few minutes later, Hugh and Katyusha sat in the jeep, reminiscing about the hospitality and kindness of the indigenous tribes with their guides.
"Hurry up and turn around, they seem to have an accident." Katyusha exclaimed.
The two jeeps made a 180-degree turn and accelerated in the direction they came.
a few minutes ago......
The chieftain and the tribesmen had just bid farewell to their guests and entered into the daily tribal business, when a cloud of dust rose from the ground in the distance, and three government jeeps, full of soldiers, rushed murderously towards the location of the village.
Seeing this, the chief hurriedly beckoned to the tribesmen, and ordered the women and children to hide in the huts, while the young tribesmen and hunters took their weapons and hid behind the fence, closed the tribe gates, and waited for the battle.
The roar of the other party's vehicles got closer and closer, and a jeep rushing in front of it increased its horsepower, directly ignoring the gate of the tribe, broke through the fence, and drove under the tribe's totem pole, and the other two jeeps then arrived, and a big man with a tiger's back got out of the car, and said in the local indigenous language: "I want to requisition your young and middle-aged men here, go to the battlefield, and fight for us."
The chief gazed at them: "This is our homeland, the place where we have lived for generations, and my people and I are free and will not be enslaved by you." Several tribal hunters behind them, sensing the hostility of the other party, gathered around the rear of the chieftain in an attempt to protect their own chieftain.
"You hard-mouthed guys, it seems that you won't obey if you don't give some color." The lead officer gestured to a soldier with a machine gun behind him. The latter jumped out of the jeep, raised his machine gun, and poured fire on several tribesmen with sticks beside him, who collapsed in a pool of blood before they could take a step forward.
A young woman and her child, who were hiding in the hut, cried out in terror and staggered forward, kneeling before her husband's corpse, crying heartbreakingly.
"You demons, Heaven will punish you." The chief raised his cane as he spoke, and the hunters beside him drew their bows, ready to return fire. The officer raised the AK47 automatic rifle in his hand, aimed at several hunters opposite, and pulled the trigger continuously. The chief watched as the hunters around him fell, his heart filled with fear and hatred.
"That's what happens against us." The officer beckoned, signaling his men behind him to line up in an attack formation. "If you start working together, nothing will happen. But now, your uncooperative attitude has left me with no choice. Even if you force your people to join the army, they will look for an opportunity to get revenge. ”
"So......" a wicked smile appeared on the corner of the officer's mouth: "Destroy them." ”
With the continuous roar of guns, the tribal village turned into a living hell, full of natives crying and howling for their lives, unarmed and at their mercy, shot by cold bullets or killed by merciless bayonets, the blood that flowed quickly stained the earth red, and the little boy was not spared, clutching the chocolate Hugh had given him before he died.
The gunfire finally subsided, and the officer issued a new order in cold blood: "Set this place on fire, turn this place to ashes, I don't want those troubled foreign journalists to see this scene and cause me trouble." ”
Two soldiers lifted a bucket of gasoline from the jeep and poured it on the surrounding wooden buildings, setting it on fire.
"It's come to this, prepare to evacuate, find the next village, and kill those who dare to disobey." After the officer finished speaking, he drove away with his men, and the monstrous fire, wrapped in thick black smoke, continued to rise behind them.
By the time Hugh and his party arrived, there was a sea of fire in front of them, the bodies of the unfortunate natives were everywhere, the chief had been shot twice in the head, his eyes were still open, showing horror and unwillingness, and behind him, several loyal tribal guards lay down.
The confrontation between the kind and simple prehistoric civilization and the modern civilization that bullies the weak is such an ending, and a sad feeling hits Hugh from the bottom of his heart.
Katyusha found the little boy and her sister among the bodies of the victims, and she held them tightly to her chest, her eyes filled with tears and her heart burned with anger.
"If we had left later, it might not have ended like this." Hugh felt remorseful.
"The government army is like this, it has always carried out the iron and blood rule of the president, doing all kinds of evil, and the people are complaining, and now that there is no military pay, it will only intensify the persecution of the civilian population."
"I'm going to make these guys pay for their blood." Hugh clenched his fists tightly.
At this time, the wind continued to increase, and looking at the growing fire, the guide reminded: "For safety, let's get out of here first, we can't do anything in the face of this situation."
Everyone stood up and came to the outskirts of the village, watching as the fire that rushed into the sky gradually swallowed everything in the village. The beautiful scene of last night came to everyone's hearts, and the hospitable smiles of the indigenous people seemed to be vivid, compared to the tragic scene in front of them, so many creatures were tragically destroyed in an instant, and they felt extremely sad in their hearts.
"Take us to the arms dealer, it's time to arm yourself." Hugh said in a low voice. Then walking towards the jeep, Katyusha watched his heavy and powerful steps, where deep hatred and anger were condensed, and the sound of his footsteps landing seemed to shatter the earthquake and leave deep footprints on the grass.
Everyone started the jeep, and the guide took out a homemade map from his bosom, pointed to the corner with a red circle drawn on it, and motioned to Katyusha: "The location of the arms dealer is still two hours away, in the basement of a town. The town is now deserted, and the local residents have fled to neighboring countries or caves and jungles to escape the war, and most of the buildings are now empty. It is now under the control of the ** armed forces and has become a stronghold for them. ”
"**Armed? How is the situation of the other party. Katyusha asked.
"Initially formed spontaneously by the local militia and led by a number of people with high prestige among the population, there was a certain gap in the number and power of weapons and equipment compared with the government army, but this gap has been narrowed by the successive influx of foreign arms dealers. Now the ** armed forces have an absolute advantage in numbers. Due to the sponsorship of some wealthy and well-known entrepreneurs in China, the armed forces have strong financial resources, sufficient supplies, food and drink, and the banner of justifiably overthrowing the government's rule has attracted many people to join their ranks. Even young people from some poor neighboring countries, in order to earn the first pot of gold in their lives, have become members of the armed forces. The guide gushed introducing.
"Then the current situation, ** armed forces are like the rising sun, and the government army is running out of energy, and it is only a matter of time before it is overthrown?" Hugh inquired.
