Chapter 024: The Famous Generals of the Late Han Dynasty (II)
【Zhu Jun】
Zhu Jun (?) — 195), the word Gongwei. A native of Shangyu County, Huiji County (now Shangyu, Zhejiang). A famous general in the late Eastern Han Dynasty.
Zhu Jun was born poor, his father died when he was very young, and he was raised by his mother. He himself was very filial to his mother, and was later promoted to Zhu Jun as filial piety by Taishou Xu Xu Jue, and then promoted to Lanling Order, because of his good political achievements, he was commended by the East China Sea.
At that time, there were bandits in Jiaozhou, and the state pastors and county guards were weak and incompetent, and they could not be banned. Liang Long, who cochined, led a crowd of 10,000 people to rebel with Kong Zhi, the Taishou of the South China Sea, and broke through the county. In the first year of Guanghe (178), the imperial court appointed Zhu Jun as the history of Jiaozhi Thorn, and Zhu Jun recruited soldiers in this county plus a total of 5,000 people transferred, and went to crusade in two ways. He first sent envoys to Nanhai County to inspect the truth and preach virtue in order to deter the enemy. Then he joined forces with the soldiers and horses of the seven counties to persecute the thieves, killed Lianglong, surrendered tens of thousands of people, and put down the rebellion within a month. Zhu Jun was awarded the title of the Marquis of the Pavilion because of his merits, 1,500 households, 50 catties of gold, and was recruited to advise the doctor.
After the outbreak of the Yellow Turban Uprising, Zhu Jun was recommended by the imperial court secretary as the right middle lang general, holding the Son of Heaven Festival, and the left middle lang general Huangfu Song fought against the Yellow Turban thieves in Yingchuan, Runan, and Chen State. Zhu Jun first fought against the Yellow Turban Army's Bocai Division, but was defeated and was forced to retreat to Changshe. But then he cooperated with Huangfu Song tacitly, and the two fought successively, defeated Bocai and Peng Tuo of the Yellow Turban Army many times, recovered Yingchuan, Runan, and Chen State one after another, and finally quelled the rebellion of the Yellow Turban Army in this area. Huangfu Song said that he pacified the situation of the thieves and attributed the credit to Zhu Jun, so he named Zhu Jun as the Marquis of Xixiang and promoted to the rank of the thief general.
Later, Zhu Jun went to crusade against the Yellow Turban thieves in the Wancheng area, and although he experienced almost a change of commander on the way, he finally joined forces with Xu Xuan and Qin Jie, the assassins of Jingzhou, to pacify them.
In the spring of the second year, the imperial court sent an envoy to hold the Son of Heaven Festival to appoint Zhu Jun as the general of the right chariot cavalry, return to Beijing in triumph, serve as the doctor of Guanglu, increase the number of 5,000, change the title of Qiantang Marquis, and add a special position. Later, due to the death of Zhu Jun's mother, he resigned, and when he came out to be an official again, he was appointed by the imperial court as a master craftsman, and transferred to the young government and the imperial servant.
After a period of time, the remnants of the Yellow Turban Army began to gradually become active again, and the Montenegrin Army led by Zhang Yan once approached the Luoyang area. So the imperial court appointed Zhu Jun as the Taishou of Hanoi and led his soldiers to repel Zhang Yan.
After Dong Zhuo came to power, he respected Zhu Jun very much on the surface, but in fact he was quite jealous of him. After the Kwantung princes rebelled against Dong, Dong Zhuo intended to move the capital, but Zhu Jun repeatedly stopped him. Although Dong Zhuo was disgusted with Zhu Jun against him, he wanted to take advantage of his fame, so he asked him to be promoted to a servant and his deputy. But the imperial court envoy awarded the official, but Zhu Jun refused to accept it, and finally failed.
After Dong Zhuo went to Chang'an, he ordered Zhu Jun to stay in Luoyang, and Zhu Jun contacted the Kwantung princes and wanted to use himself as an internal response. Later, because the news might be leaked, Zhu Jun was afraid of being attacked by Dong Zhuo, so he abandoned his official position and ran to Jingzhou. Dong Zhuo later appointed Yang Yi, a Hongnong, as Henan Yin and stationed in Luoyang. After Zhu Jun heard about it, he immediately led his troops into Luoyang, and Yang Yi ran away after hearing the news.
Zhu Jun thought that Henan was ruined and had nothing to rely on, so he abandoned Luoyang East to garrison Zhongmu, notified various prefectures and counties, and asked them to send troops to fight against Dong Zhuo. Xuzhou Thorn Shi Tao Qian sent 3,000 elite soldiers, and the rest of the states and counties gave some, Tao Qian wrote to Zhu Jun to act as the general of the chariot cavalry. After that, Li Dao and Guo Yan led tens of thousands of people to crusade against Zhu Jun, and Zhu Jun attacked and was defeated. Zhu Jun knew that his troops were outnumbered, so he stayed at the pass and did not move forward.
In the second year of Chuping (192), Li Dao and Guo Yan killed Wang Yun, drove away Lü Bu, and held Emperor Xian of Han hostage to control the government. Zhu Jun was still in Zhongmu at the time, Tao Qian thought that Zhu Jun was a famous general, who had made many military exploits and could be entrusted with great responsibilities, so he and Zhu Haojie jointly elected him as the Taishi after the year, and passed it on to the shepherds of various states, and invited them to crusade against Li Dao and welcome the Son of Heaven.
Li Wei used the strategy of Taiwei Zhou Zhong and Shangshu Jia Xu to recruit Zhu Jun into the court. Zhu Jun decided to go to Chang'an because of the righteousness of the Son of Heaven, and Zhu Jun succeeded Zhou Zhong as the lieutenant and recorded Shangshu.
In the second year of Xingping (195), the Xiliang army was in civil strife, Li Dao first killed Fan Chou, and then Li Dao and Guo Yan attacked each other in Chang'an City, and Chang'an was in chaos. Li Dao kidnapped Emperor Xian to his camp, and Emperor Xian ordered Zhu Jun and Taiwei Yang Biao and more than a dozen people to persuade Guo Yan to reconcile with Li Dao. Guo Yan refused, because he detained Zhu Jun and others as hostages. Zhu Jun has always had a strong temperament, and he died of illness on the same day.
Zhu Jun has a strong personality, has integrity, and is good at fighting, but his politics are a little worse.
【Talking about the Three Generals】
Among these three generals, Lu Zhineng is capable of literature and martial arts, Huangfu Song is like a god in his army, and Zhu Jun is second.
Lu Zhi can maintain the righteousness of the court in the court, he can leave thousands of books in the opposition, he can keep one side safe, and if he is handsome, he can lead millions of soldiers, he is versatile, both civil and military, and there are disciples such as Liu Bei and Gongsun Zhan, but unfortunately he was first victimized by the villain, and then he was not allowed by the ministers.
Huangfu Song can be called the military god of the world, he has led troops in Yingchuan, Runan and Jizhou to break the Yellow Turban Army, in addition to Zhang Jiao died of illness, Zhang Bao, Zhang Liang were killed. Later, he broke the kingdom in the northwest to keep one side safe. Huangfu Song led the troops to fight all the year round as a general, but he was almost undefeated, even if he was besieged by the Changshe back then, he was dragged down by Zhu Jun. After he quelled the Yellow Turban Rebellion, he entrusted all the credit to Lu Zhi and Zhu Jun, and his high style and bright festival can be seen. He is brave and strategic, and he uses troops in a good way, even the ambitious Dong Zhuo has to be admired for it, but unfortunately he was finally feared by Dong Zhuo, and was idle in the central government, and he was not of great use. In terms of military ability alone, Huangfu Song was not inferior to Sun Jian and Cao Cao later.
Although Zhu Jun is not as good as Huangfu Song, he is also a general, and the number of battles he led the army in his career is no less than that of Huangfu Song, and he rarely loses.
Although the abilities of the three are not weak, especially with the strong military ability of Huangfu Song, their reputation is not high at all, and they are not at all comparable to Guo Ziyi, Shi Kefa and others, who are also generals in troubled times. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the heroes of the Three Kingdoms era behind them came out together, there are countless civil and military wizards, and the stars are too brilliant to completely cover them up; On the other hand, it is also because the large-scale turmoil in the Later Han Dynasty mainly came from the central government, and they were all imperial court generals, all of whom were controlled by the central court of the imperial court. Even if they leave the imperial court, because the local and the central are two systems, they can't adapt well, which is very different from other generals in troubled times.
Although Lu Zhi, Huangfu Song, and Zhu Jun are weak, their own skills are not low at all, but they are just tired by the times.
ps: Although I don't have a general evaluation of these three people, I personally think that Huangpu Song's command rate is "A+", and Zhu Jun is "A-"
