Chapter 033: Fighting Hefei Again?

In the twenty-fourth year of Jian'an (219), Liu Bei proclaimed himself king of Hanzhong, and in the same year, Guan Yu sent troops north to crusade against Cao Ren and launched the Battle of Xiangfan. However, it is also recorded that in this year, Sun Quan once again went north to attack Hefei.

【Tsundere Guan Yu】

Liu Bei proclaimed himself the queen of Hanzhong, set up Guan Yu as the former general, Huang Zhong as the rear general, Zhuge Liang knew about it, and persuaded Liu Bei: "Huang Zhong's reputation has never been comparable to Guan Yu, Ma Chao and others, and now let him sit on an equal footing with Guan and Ma, Ma Chao and Zhang Fei are now nearby, they have heard and witnessed Huang Zhong's military exploits, and they can also explain to them, and Guan Yu is far away in Jingzhou, he will not be happy to know this matter, can this appointment be canceled?" Liu Bei said: "I will explain it to Guan Yu!" ”

So Liu Bei sent Fei Shi, a native of Qianwei, to pay homage to Guan Yu, the governor of Jingzhou, as a former general. When Guan Yu learned that Huang Zhong had been appointed as a general, he said angrily: "The eldest husband will not be in the same column as a veteran!" Therefore he refused to be worshipped.

Fei Shi persuaded Guan Yu and said: "Those who establish a great industry are not just one kind of person. At that time, Xiao He and Cao participated in the Han Gaozu Liu Bang had a friendship since childhood, while Chen Ping and Han Xin fled for their lives later. When it comes to their official order, Han Xin's title is the highest, but he has not heard that Xiao He and Cao Shen have complained because of this. Now the king of Hanzhong has given him a high favor because of Huang Zhong's temporary merits, but when it comes to the status of the king of Hanzhong's heart, how can he equate Huang Zhong with you! The king of Hanzhong and you are like the same whole, sharing joys and sorrows, blessings and misfortunes. I don't think you should care about the rank of official, and the number of knighthoods. I am but a messenger who has been commanded, and if you refuse to accept the appointment, I will go back at once, but I feel sorry for you, and I am afraid that you will regret it later. Guan Yu was greatly moved and came to his senses after hearing this, and immediately accepted the appointment of the former general.

In history, Guan Yu's personality is relatively arrogant, as early as Ma Chao's matter, it can be seen as early as Ma Chao's matter, Zhuge Liang, Liu Bei and others also know this, so everyone has a high tolerance for Guan Yu, but internally, it is good to say that externally, Guan Yu will offend people by doing this.

[Fight Hefei again? 】

According to the "Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms: The Biography of Wen Hui", in the twenty-fourth year of Jian'an (219), Sun Quan once again led his troops to attack Hefei. On the one hand, Yangzhou Assassin Shi Wenhui garrisoned the army, and on the other hand, he said to Yanzhou Assassin Shi Pei Qian: "Although there are enemy troops here, but there is no fear, I am worried that General Ren Zhengnan (referring to Cao Ren) will have an accident." Now that the river is rising, Zixiao's troops are alone in the depths of the enemy and lack of support, and they have not made long-term precautions. Guan Yu, who has always been known for his sharpness, must be a disaster if he takes advantage of the rising water to march. As a result, Guan Yu really took advantage of the time to attack Fancheng, causing Cao Ren's army to fall into a bitter battle.

From this account, we learn that before Guan Yu's crusade against Cao Ren, Sun Quan had sent troops north again, and shared considerable pressure for Guan Yu. But is this record true? Did Sun Quan really send troops again in the twenty-fourth year of Jian'an (219)?

You must know that Sun Quan had already sent the commander Xu Shen to visit Cao Cao in the twenty-second year of Jian'an (217) and asked for surrender, Cao Cao also agreed to repair, and Cao Sun was reunited as in-laws, and it was only about two years before Sun Quan tore his face? Does Sun Quan have a reason to do so?

At that time, Yangzhou Zhang Liao and other generals were still stationed in Hefei, Sun Quan's previous two crusades ended in failure, where did he get the confidence to take Hefei now, and Sun Quan took the initiative to surrender, he finally ended the conflict with Cao Cao temporarily, why start the war again.

In the twenty-second year of Jian'an (217), Lu Su, a representative of the pro-Liu faction, died, and was replaced by Lü Meng, who advocated the seizure of Jingzhou, when Lü Meng actively persuaded Sun Quan to seize Jingzhou first, Sun Quan's eyes also began to turn from Hefei to the Jiangling area, and the rapid development of Liu Bei's power also caused Sun Quan to be deeply jealous, in this case Sun Quan had no reason to give up the peace with Cao Cao, because Sun Quan did not have the capital to fight Cao Cao and Liu Bei at the same time, but he was absolutely self-aware.

Theoretically, Sun Quan may not be far behind after seeing Liu Bei's success in capturing Hanzhong, so he wants to try to occupy Hefei while Cao Cao's army is still in Hanzhong, just like he did when he sent troops to Hefei for the second time.

However, in the first-hand materials of the relevant history (the so-called first-hand materials mainly refer to the materials of the Wei and Jin dynasties in the "Three Kingdoms" and Pei Songzhi's supplements, excluding the later "Book of the Later Han" and "Zizhi Tongjian" and other integrated materials), only the "Biography of Wen Hui" has a relevant record this time.

In the twenty-fourth year of Jian'an (219), Sun Quan's troops went north are not recorded in the "Emperor Wu Ji" and "The Biography of Lord Wu".

In the "Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms", the biography of the monarch is very important, it not only includes the personal affairs of the monarch, but also records some major events that occurred within the group at that time in the same year, such as the tug-of-war between Sun Quan and Cao Cao in the Jianghuai area is recorded in the "Emperor Wu Ji" and "The Biography of Wu Zhu", including two Hefei battles, two battles of Weixukou, in which there are contradictions about the time of the first Hefei battle, if Sun Quan sent troops again in 219, there is no reason not to be recorded.

This is not only in the "Emperor Wu Ji" and "The Biography of Wu Zhu", except for "The Biography of Wen Hui", in other biographies of the "Three Kingdoms" and in Pei Songzhi's supplement, I have not found any relevant records (Note 1).

The most important thing is that if this dispatch is true, it means that the relationship between Sun Quan and Cao Cao has broken down, but until the third year of the Huang Dynasty (222), when Emperor Wen of Wei Cao Pi ordered Sun Quan to be conquered again, the relationship between Wu and Wei was relatively friendly, and there were no signs of rupture or repair after the rupture.

Therefore, on the whole, Sun Quan sent troops north to attack Hefei in the twenty-fourth year of Jian'an (219), which is somewhat convincing, and in principle, Sun Quan's reason for going north at this time is not sufficient, and more importantly, there is not enough information to endorse such a major event as Sun Quan's crusade against Hefei, so this record in "Wen Hui's Biography" cannot determine the authenticity.

Personally, I think that from the 22nd year of Jian'an (217) to the 3rd year of the Huang dynasty (222), Cao Wei and Jiangdong entered a brief period of peace, during which both Cao Cao and Sun Quan had violent conflicts with Liu Bei's group, and the two were relatively restrained, especially Sun Quan was more cautious in his aspects.

Because the strength of Sun Quan's group was relatively average at that time, Sun Quan did not have the capital to fight with the two at the same time as Cao Cao, so if Sun Quan wanted to seize Jingzhou, he must obtain the support of Cao Wei, and in the face of the conflict with Liu Bei, Sun Quan must also protect himself from being attacked from both sides, in this case, Sun Quan basically could not take the initiative to provoke the Cao Wei group, which also shows that Sun Quan's possibility of crusading against Hefei in the twenty-fourth year of Jian'an (219) is low.

Note 1: If there is any other first-hand evidence to corroborate it, then my inference will have to be repeated.
