Chapter 019: The Rise of Gongsun Chan

Gongsun Zhan, the word Bo Jue, was a native of Lingzhi in western Liaoning (now Qian'an City, Hebei). His personal situation is somewhat similar to Yuan Shao, both of whom were born in a big family, and his mother was also from a humble background, and later became a handsome guy. But Gongsun Zhan's luck was a little worse than Yuan Shao's, and he failed to inherit the side branch, so because Gongsun Zhan, who was born in his mother, failed to get strong support from the family, he could only serve as a small official in the book category at first.

When Gongsun Chan was a scribe in the county, because of his dignified appearance and loud voice, he was smart and conscientious, and sometimes he said several things at the same time, but he did not miss any mistakes. Taishou (Note 1) therefore considered him a genius and began to respect him, and later even married his own daughter to him, and asked him to go to Zhuojun to study scriptures with Liu Bei and others.

After Gongsun Chan completed his studies, he worked as a county official under Taishou for a period of time. Later, Liu Taishou had an accident and was summoned to see the court lieutenant, originally according to the imperial decree that his subordinates were not allowed to approach, Gongsun Chan put on makeup and changed clothes, lied that he was a soldier who served him, personally drove for him, brought clothes and food, and served by Liu Taishou's side.

When Liu Taishou was demoted to Jiaozhi Rinan, Gongsun Zhan prepared rice and meat, sacrificed his ancestors in Beimangshan, and prepared to go to Rinan together, he held up the wine glass and said: "In the past, he was the son of the family, and today he is the subordinate of the family, we are going to Rinan, there is a miasma in Rinan, maybe we can't come back, and we say goodbye to our ancestors here." Gongsun Chan was emotionally excited and sad and cried, bowed again, bowed and bowed, and then stood up with high spirits.

Perhaps the heavens were also moved by Gongsun Zhan, and Liu Taishou got the edict of pardon and returned it halfway through.

This incident also became an important turning point in Gongsun Zhan's bureaucratic career, and Gongsun Chan was later promoted to filial piety and honesty because of this incident, became Langzhong, and since then he has been on the fast track, and later moved to the long history of Liaodong's vassal state.

At this time, Gongsun Chan was still mainly handling government affairs in the state, and did not show his military talent, and later because of an emergency, Gongsun Chan slowly began his military career.

According to records, the first time Gongsun Chan led his troops into battle was when he encountered an emergency. At that time, Gongsun Chan was patrolling the fortress with more than a dozen cavalry, and encountered hundreds of Xianbei cavalry on the road, and Gongsun Chan was forced to retreat to an empty pavilion, when he said to his cavalry: "If we can't rush out today, we will be killed by the enemy!" ”

Gongsun Zhan himself also held a spear, with spear heads at both ends, and took the lead, leading his subordinates to gallop out to assassinate, killing and injuring dozens of Xianbei people, but nearly half of his subordinates died, but in the end he was able to avoid the catastrophe. The Xianbei people were punished this time, and after that, they did not dare to enter the fortress to make trouble. Gongsun Chan was then appointed as the county magistrate of Zhuo County because of his merits.

And Gongsun Zhan later officially became a general, and it was not until the Zhongping period of Emperor Ling (184-189).

During the Zhongping period, Liangzhou's Bian Zhang and Han Sui rebelled, and the imperial court organized 3,000 Wuhuan cavalry cavalry in Youzhou area, in view of Gongsun Zhan's personal situation, he was temporarily promoted to the governor, exercising all the powers of the governor, so that he led 3,000 cavalry to follow the cavalry general Zhang Wen to suppress the Liangzhou rebels, and Gongsun Zhan also began his career as a horseman.

But I didn't expect that the action of the imperial court to transfer the Youzhou army was seen as a good opportunity by Zhang Ju and Zhang Chun, who had long been dissident Yuyang, and the two of them were dissatisfied because they were not reused by Zhang Wen, so they were dissatisfied, and simply took the opportunity to lure Qiu Liju and others of the Karasuma Kingdom in Liaoxi to rebel and attack Jizhong, Zhang Ju claimed to be the Son of Heaven, and Zhang Chun was the general of Mitian and the king of stability.

At that time, Gongsun Zhan's troops had only marched into Jizhong, and in this case, his plan to go to Liangzhou was also abandoned, and under the leadership of Zhonglang General Meng Yi, Gongsun Zhan turned to suppress the rebellion of Zhang Chun, Qiu Liju and others.

Later, Gongsun Chan pursued Zhang Chun and Qiu Liju's troops, and the two sides fought at Shimen, a vassal state of Liaodong, and Gongsun Chan won a complete victory, and the enemy abandoned his wife and children and fled across the border fortress, and all the men and women he had snatched were recaptured. Gongsun Chan took advantage of the victory to pursue, but because he was too deep behind the enemy and isolated, he was surrounded by Qiu Liju and others in Guanzi City, Liaoxi, the two sides were deadlocked for more than 200 days, the situation of Gongsun Chan's troops gradually deteriorated, the grain was finished eating horses, the horses were finished eating the leather on the bow and shield, and the combat power had begun to run out, helplessly, Gongsun Chan and the soldiers said goodbye, asking everyone to disperse and break through, there was a lot of rain and snow at that time, and five or six out of ten of Gongsun Chan's men died in the ravine, and the enemy was also hungry and poor in this situation, and there was no way to stop it with all his might, After being broken through by Gongsun Zhan, he also retreated to Liucheng.

After this battle, the imperial court appointed Gongsun Chan as the commander of the captive school, made the capital pavilion marquis, and made him concurrently serve as the chief of the subordinate state, mainly responsible for fighting against foreign tribes and rebels.

From then on, Gongsun Zhan commanded the soldiers and horses to resist the border invaders. Every time there was an enemy, he always looked angry, as if he was looking for an enemy, and when he saw the enemy's trace, he rushed to kill him, and sometimes followed by a night fight. The enemy knew his reputation, feared his bravery, and no one dared to confront him.

Gongsun Chan often led dozens of good archers, all riding white horses, as the left and right wings, calling themselves "white horse righteous servants". The Wuhuan people are afraid of Gongsun Zhan, they tell each other, and actively avoid the long history of the white horse, as long as they meet the "white horse righteous servant", the enemy will flee away.

Zhang Chun, Qiu Liju and others hated Gongsun Chan deeply, and even painted a portrait of Gongsun Chan, and the Wuhuan people rode on horses to shoot it proudly, and shouted long live when they were shot.

Later, Gongsun Chan led his troops to fight with Zhang Chun, Qiu Liju and others, and under the strong pressure of Gongsun Chan, the king of Karasuma of the subject country led his tribe to surrender to Gongsun Zhan, and Gongsun Chan was promoted to Zhonglang General, and then stationed in the subject state of Liaoxi.

In the years of war with the northern Hu, Gongsun Zhan accumulated many merits, and his status was also constantly improved, from the cavalry governor to the commander of the captive school, and finally became the Zhonglang general of the guarding side, and the marquis of the capital pavilion.

However, Gongsun Zhan and the Hu people held each other for a long time, although they also had many achievements, but they still couldn't stop Zhang Chun and Qiu Liju from invading the four prefectures of Qing, Xu, You, and Hebei, and they plundered everywhere, and the four prefectures suffered greatly.

In order to completely solve this problem, Emperor Ling was ready to change the head of Youzhou, and it happened that Liu Yan proposed to Emperor Ling to "abolish Shi Limu" and send important officials from the court to serve as local governors and county governors, so as to guard and stabilize the world.

The court commented that Liu Yu, the official of the Zongzheng Sect in the East China Sea, was not only virtuous and prestigious, but also served as the assassin of Youzhou, and Rong Di and other ethnic minorities were also attached to him.

So the story of Gongsun Chan and Liu Yu began.
