Maasai people

Masai East African ethnicity. It is mainly found in the grassland areas of southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. It belongs to the sultan type of the Negro race, and is the southernmost branch of the Nilots. Use the Maasai language. It belongs to the Shari-Nilotic language family of the Nilo-Saharan language family. Believe that all things are animist. The Maasai still live under a strict tribal system, governed by tribal chiefs and councils of elders. Adult males are graded according to their age. In nomadic herding, pastures are publicly owned, and livestock belong to the family and are inherited according to the patrilineal line. In recent years, the governments of Tanzania and Kenya have encouraged Maasai to settle down for agricultural production, with a small number of people converting to semi-farming and pastoralism, and a small number moving to cities to earn a living. The Maasai people feed on meat and milk, and like to drink fresh cow blood, and each large family raises dozens of cows for the purpose of sucking blood. Polygamy is prevalent among the Maasai people. Adult men grow their hair and braid, and young women shave their heads. In recent years, settled Maasai children have begun to attend school, and a small number of Maasai intellectuals have emerged.

The Maasai are brave and good hunters, and according to logic, the Maasai live in the grasslands and jungles, and are in the company of wild beasts, so it is natural that they are good at hunting. But in fact, not only do the people of Maasai not hunt, they even eat meat only during celebrations, and they never eat wild animals, including fish. The worship of nature kept them away from hunting. The daily needs of the Maasai are provided by the milk and blood of the animals, and when their mouths are dry, they pull out the sharp knife from their waists, stick it in the neck of the ox, and suck it with a small straw hose, just like we drink. The Maasai believed that the herd was a gift from the gods, and they despised the farming life, believing that farming made the earth dirty. The Maasai regard their cattle as life, and at night they are kept in the village and even share a hut with their owners. During the day, the young children tend to the calves, while the older children drive the herds to distant pastures.

The Maasai people's attire is very conspicuous, and the men approve the "bundle card", which is actually two pieces of cloth with black stripes on a red background, one covering shame and the other draped diagonally over one shoulder. This garment resembles a fire, and this is exactly what they are trying to achieve, in the savannah where wild beasts are everywhere, so that "a ball of fire" can effectively drive away wild beasts. Maasai women wear a "kanga" with a large round shawl around their necks and a circle of white beads on their heads. Their ears are large, some of them have large earlobes and shoulders, and the Maasai girls are born with piercing ears and eyes, and then gradually increase the weight of the ornaments, so that the ears are longer and longer, and the holes are getting bigger and bigger. Most of the Maasai people are missing two lower front teeth, which were extracted from an early age in order to facilitate the administration of medicine. Of course, the avant-garde youth has begun to abandon many customs, so don't be surprised if you see a Maasai girl with a ponytail. In addition, the Maasai carried a log or spear with them for self-defense and cattle herding. Because of the habit formed over a long period of time, even if you go shopping in the city, you will not leave it. It is said that this is a government concession, and no one else is allowed to do so.
