Chapter 4: Ian
In Granny Sumu's cabin, the dim light of the fire swayed, and several rickety figures were reflected on the mottled walls, deep and shallow.
The owners of these shadows are the village chief, Granny Sumu, and several village elders. They were sitting around Granny Sumu's bed, and on it lay a pale young man. Perhaps because of hunger and fatigue, his cheeks were as thin as a knife, his eye sockets were deep, and his cheekbones were prominent.
"I almost died. β
"Tomorrow morning it's going to be air-dried meat. β
"It's thanks to Granny Sumu," said the village chief, "and if we were replaced, I'm afraid we wouldn't hear anything." β
Another old man said worriedly: "But this child's origin is unknown, and he is living here alone, and I don't know if he will be a wanted criminal, so when he wakes up...... Give him something to eat and drink, and let him go!"
"He's a bit like my grandson......," the blind Granny Sumu sighed softly as she looked at the young man on the bed.
"Mother-in-law, your grandson left here with his mother when he was 3 years old and never came back. The village chief reminded.
"yes, don't be fooled. An elderly peasant woman shook Granny Sumu's hand.
"There shouldn't be any danger for the time being," said an old man sitting near the bedside as he cleaned up the medicine box in front of him, "If you wake up tomorrow morning, let him leave quickly." When he walked to the door, he didn't forget to turn around and remind: "This world is not as peaceful as it says." β
The sound of footsteps, the creaking of the door opening, the gentle sound of the wind, the creaking of the door closing...... Granny Su Mu knew that the village chief and several elders were gone. She stood up slightly, approached the bed, and reached for it.
It was the boy's hand that was touched.
It was a hand that was extremely inappropriate for its age, and even the skin of the palm was rough and stiff. Granny Su Mu has been blind for many years, and as long as she touches the facial features of a person's face, she can roughly tell the age, but this hand and his facial features clearly give a very different number. Mother-in-law Su Mu frowned, touched the young man's bare feet again, and sighed for a long time.
"Son, what have you been through......
As soon as the sky was shining the next day, there were many people outside Granny Su Mu's house.
Near the door were the village chief and several elders, and in the outer circle were nearby villagers. They had all heard about Granny Su Mu rescuing a teenager in the middle of the night.
"Squeak-" The door opened, and Granny Su Mu walked out with a pathfinder stick. The one who came out of the house after her was the young man he had rescued last night, wearing a beige old cloth shirt and pants borrowed from Granny Sumu. The clothes and pants were cleanly washed, neatly folded, and the creases on both sides of the trouser legs were clearly visible, but the size was a little too large for a teenager and it didn't look very good.
The young man's face was pale, without a trace of blood, and his body was emaciated, as if the slightest wind in Light Breeze Village could blow him down, and he was crumbling. But his eyes were much more energetic than his body looked, and a pair of amber eyes sparkled in their sockets.
He glanced alarmingly at the villagers around him, and quickly lowered his head again.
"Granny Su Mu......" The village chief was about to open his mouth, but was interrupted by Granny Su Mu.
"Ouch, everyone's here? Exactlyβ" Granny Su Mu turned sideways, pulled the young man out, and said happily: "Let me officially introduce to you, this is my grandson!" Granny Su Mu paused, and muttered softly, "What's it called......?" and immediately raised her voice again: "Ian, my poor grandson has come to join the old woman!
The surrounding villagers were in an uproar.
"Does Granny Sumu have grandchildren?"
"Mother-in-law can't see with her eyes, she shouldn't have been deceived by this kid!"
"When did Granny Su Mu have a grandson? My son has never seen it, where did such a big grandson come out?"
Someone tugged at the man: "The son is there, and he left early...... But this kid ......."
The discussion became louder and louder, and the village chief turned around and waved his hand, signaling everyone to be quiet, and then turned around and walked a few steps closer to Granny Su Mu, and said, "Granny Su Mu, are you- are you sure that he is your grandson?
"Alas, the twelve gods are above!" Su Mu exclaimed, "I am the one who will return to the twelve gods at any time, so I am looking forward to returning such a relative, but you want to drive him away?
An elder with white and long eyebrows hurriedly stepped forward to appease him, and said, "Granny Su Mu, don't worry, no one said to drive him away, we also care about you." β
"Yes," the village chief took over, turned his head to look at the villagers and Ian again, and said, "I think so, since Granny Su Mu said that this is her grandson, then we naturally believe it." But he had to have some proof of his background, to tell us where he was and what he had been through all these years, and I as the village chief and a few elders had to know that I couldn't let someone of unknown origin live like this, and no one would agree. If something happens, I won't be able to explain it to my lord. β
The village chief turned to look at the boy named Ian and said, "You stay first, but you must come and explain your situation to us in the next two days, what happened after you left here at the age of 3 and why you came back, we must find out and keep a good record." That's fine, right, Granny Sumu?"
"Ah, of course no problem, this is the best, this is the best. Granny Su Mu immediately smiled. Even with strips of cloth over her eyes, she could feel that her eyes were smiling like crescents.
"Boy, thank the village chief and elders!" she nudged Ian hard.
β...... Thank you, village chief, elder. The young man named Ian lowered his head and whispered, his eyes still looking at the ground.
In his sight, everyone's legs and feet gradually receded, and finally only the dirt floor remained, and he quietly let out a sigh of relief.
Suddenly, a child rushed into his field of vision and yelled viciously, "Hey, if you dare to bully your mother-in-law, I won't spare you!"
"Ah Hu, come back!" the child's mother snorted behind her a few steps away, and the child called Ah Hu snorted and walked back in a huff.
"Hahaha, Ah Hu is such a good boy. Granny Sumu laughed happily behind Ian's back, "Let's go, let's go inside and talk." With that, he turned and walked back into the house. Ian turned around and saw that Granny Su Mu was walking slowly, remembering that her eyes were inconvenient, he reached out to help, but just lifted it into the air and took it back, just quietly followed Granny and moved into the house.
After the door was closed and both of them were seated, Ian said, "Thank you for saving me, Granny Sumu. β
"You should be thankful for the night god Knox," the mother-in-law smiled, "If he hadn't guarded you, how could I, a blind old woman who had nothing to worry about, not sleep in the middle of the night, and how could I have found you and saved you?" Truth...... I guess you don't want to say that, right? Well, you'll have to think about itβah, don't make it too complicated, if they come and ask me...... I can't remember that much. β
She thought for a moment, and then said, "You have to memorize the things about your 'mother'! Those old guys have a good memory!"
β......β
Seeing that Ian didn't speak, Granny Su Mu said "Huh?"
"If I don't, let's go. Maybe someone else is chasing me, in case it bothers you......" Ian said, glancing uneasily at the window, which was the direction he had come.
"Bastard, what are you going to do? You look like this, you won't be so lucky next time, and you will meet a blind old woman who can save you in the middle of the night!" Su Mu thought for a while, her tone softened a little, and said, "You haven't found anyone chasing you all the way, right? Don't scare yourself." Stay first, and then accompany me, a blind old woman who has no relatives and no reason. I saved your life, didn't I?"
Hearing her mother-in-law say this, Ian couldn't refuse again, so he agreed first, but he still felt that he couldn't be at peace in his heart, thinking about how to leave as soon as possible, so as not to drag down his mother-in-law and the village.
