Chapter 175: The Value of Repairing Wonders

In 1943 of the Republican calendar, Zhang Bo arrived at the archaeological site designated by the teachers, and naturally discovered Borobudur. As an authority and fanatic of Buddhist studies, it was natural that archaeological and restoration work began on the neglect of sleep and food.

Borobudur was built as an entire large stupa, and when viewed from above, it resembles a mandala in the Buddhist Vajrayana, representing both the great world and the depths of the heart and soul of Buddhism. The base of the tower is a square with a side length of about 118 meters. The tower has nine floors, with the lower six floors being square and the upper three floors being circular. At the center of the top floor is a circular stupa surrounded by seventy-two bell-shaped stupas. Each stupa is decorated with many holes in which a statue of the Buddha sits. The pagoda is built with about 55,000 cubic meters of stone from a nearby river. The stones were cut into size and transported by hand to the construction site. The stones are connected by mortise and tenon joints. After the construction was completed, craftsmen carved reliefs into the stones. The stupa has a good drainage system to cope with the local rainstorms. To prevent water accumulation, each corner is decorated with drainage holes decorated with dripping beaks, and there are a total of 100 such drainage holes throughout the stupa.

Borobudur is very different from other similar buildings. It was built on a hill, not flat ground. However, the construction process is similar to that of other temples in Java. Due to its solid structure and pyramid-like shape, Borobudur was initially thought to be a stupa rather than a temple. The purpose of the stupa is to worship the Buddha, and sometimes it is only a sign of piety. Temples, on the other hand, are dedicated to the Buddha in houses and are visited by devotees. However, judging by the elaborate design and construction of Borobudur, it is in fact a temple. The steps and corridors of Borobudur lead the faithful up the stairs to the top floor. Each layer of Borobudur represents a realm of cultivation. The pilgrimage routes of the devotees are decorated with various motifs that symbolize the vast world of Buddhism.

Javanese folklore believes that Gunadharma was the architect of Borobudur. Little is known about him. The basic unit of length he used in the construction process was called tala, which was the distance on the face from the hairline of the forehead to the base of the jaw, or the distance between the tips of the two fingers when the thumb and middle fingers were extended as far as possible. Obviously, such units of length vary from person to person, but the stupa is very precise. A 1977 census found that the parts of the stupa often formed a ratio of 4:6:9. The same proportions were subsequently found in nearby Buddhist temples. Archaeologists speculate that this ratio has calendar, astronomical and cosmological significance, like Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

Vertically, we can divide the main building into three parts: the base, the body and the top. The base of the tower is a square with a side length of 123 meters and a height of 4 meters. The tower is made up of five gradually shrinking squares. The first floor is 7 meters from the edge of the base of the tower, and then each floor is closed by a gap of 2 meters, leaving a narrow corridor. The top of the pagoda is composed of three layers of circles, and each layer is built with a circle of porous relics, and the three-story relics stupas form three concentric circles. In the center is a main round tower, the top of which is the highest point of the building, 35 meters above the ground. Borobudur has entrances in the middle on each side, with a total of 32 stone lions guarding the four entrances, each with steps leading to the top of the tower. The main entrance to the stupa is on the east side, and the story on the relief begins here. There are steps on the hillside that lead to the flat land below.

The three parts of the stupa represent the three realms of cultivation that lead to the great world of Buddhism, namely: the realm of desire, the realm of color, and the realm of colorlessness. The base of the tower represents the realm of desire, the body of the five-story tower represents the world of color, and the three-story circular top of the tower and the main round tower represent the colorless world. The delicately decorated square of the color world evolves into an unadorned circle in the colorless world, symbolizing the transition from the color world that is obsessed with color and hue to the colorless world.

"The Charentra Dynasty, who believed in Mahayana Buddhism, was defeated by the old opponent of Shivaism, Salted Fish, after conquering the kingdom of Haling, conquering Chenla, ruling the Cham Empire, and building the Brahbudur Empire?

Do you say that it is because the first emperor built the Great Wall and Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty built the Grand Canal and exhausted the people's efforts to build Borobudur, which led to the internal and external troubles of the people's distraction, and destroyed the Charentra dynasty, or did Prince Batapan rebel be too rebellious and suddenly killed the opponent who had pressed and beat the opponent? ”

"It's not hard to figure this out, as long as you figure out the ins and outs of this Charentra dynasty.

Borobudur is the greatest building of the Charentra era. Generally speaking, the era that can leave this great building that has been immortal for future generations for thousands of years must be an era of economic prosperity and cultural development. However, as Dean Zhao Shouzhong said, the Charentra dynasty "came and went suddenly." Too little is known about this dynasty. In the three years since the discovery of this miracle, scholars have traced the clues from the numerous Buddha carvings, stupas, and shrines in Borobudur itself, from the stone inscriptions unearthed around Borobudur, and from the historical documents of Indonesia and neighboring countries (including China), trying to sort out the ins and outs of this dynasty.

Some scholars have come to the conclusion that Charentra was originally a royal family in Java that advocated Buddhism, and after its rise, it destroyed the ancient kingdom of Haling, and 250 years ago controlled Sumatra as the ruling center of the powerful dynasty - Sri Buddha, so it was very powerful and powerful. It was then that it mobilized hundreds of thousands of people to build this magnificent building. It is a Buddhist building with a touch of native Javanese ancestor worship: in the environment where the Buddha lived, Javanese houses, temples, ships, tombs appeared, and this is the proof.

Indian scholars have retorted that Charentra is a transliteration of the Sanskrit word ailendra, which translates to "Emperor of the Mountains", which was the honorific title of Lord Shiva in India at the time. The Pandyya dynasty of South India claimed to be a descendant of Shiva and had the title of "Minankita 'Charentra", suggesting that Charenda, who built Borobudur, may have been a branch of the Pandya dynasty that migrated from South India to Java for some reason. Because of this, Borobudur's sculpture style has a strong Indian classical color, and the arch of the Buddhist altar is more obviously in the style of Indian mausoleum temple I. What's more, it has been suggested that Borobudur was the product of a wave of Indian immigration.

But when did this wave of migration begin? What is the cause and process? But it is not known.

As a result, some scholars assert that in the history of Cambodia, an ancient Buddhist country, there was once a Funan Kingdom, and the Funan monarch was also known as the "Emperor of the Mountains". Therefore, there must be some connection between the "Emperor of the Mountains" in Java and the "Emperor of the Mountains" in Cambodia. Coincidentally, some people have verified that the end of the Funan Kingdom is very close to the establishment of the Javanese Charentra Dynasty, and the Charentra Dynasty once conquered and controlled the Funan homeland after it became strong. Some scholars who advocate this theory further deduce that it may be one of Java. After marrying a princess of the "Emperor of the Mountains" lineage in Funan, he inherited their title and became the monarch of Charentra after returning to Java, spreading the Buddhist culture of Funan......

All three of these claims are unconvincing due to the lack of strong evidence. Moreover, many questions arise from this: Is Charentra native to Indonesia? So is it from Central Java, East Java, or West Java? Some say it's Sumatra, others say it's the neighboring Malay Peninsula; Is Charentra from the Indian subcontinent? Some say South India, others say Deccan, others say Myanmar to the east....... There are really different opinions, and there is no consensus. ”

"I don't care how the builder of this miracle disappeared, I just want to know how to end the protection of this miracle as soon as possible, and I want to go to another miracle sooner?"

"Zhang Bo, don't worry, we have a budget of three million, and we can't spend it at all. Teacher: I think this place has been abandoned for a long time, and no one has maintained it. But in reality, local Buddhists still come here regularly. One hundred and fifty years of wind and rain will not cause any great damage to this stone structure. In fact, the local Jungyalu dynasty and the Keyili dynasty were both Hindu states. Fearing a civil war, the two sons of the Shiva believer Erlanga decades ago seemed to be at odds with each other, and fearing a civil war, he divided the kingdom into two kingdoms, the eastern kingdom called Rongyalu and the western kingdom called Panchalu, which is what we call Jiyiri.

Unlike in China, the son-in-law also has the right to inherit. The inheritance and growth of many countries are in the hands of sons-in-law. In ancient times, when there was no paper, local history and political events were recorded on Bayeux and, like the Buddhist scriptures of India, were full of faults and missing key parts. Without sufficient documentation, it is naturally impossible to find the truth.

The only thing we can confirm is that the struggle between Buddhism and Hinduism here is only ideological, and there is no political persecution or means such as the destruction of Buddha by the three martial arts. The ideological and religious struggle is very modest, so the ruins here have not been destroyed, they have only been abandoned. Zhao Shouzhong, a fanatic who loves archaeology and collects cultural relics, took the opportunity of an official diplomatic return visit to Sri Buddha and the monarchs of the Javanese kingdoms to split up with Bai Jia and sneak into Borobudur to visit and archaeology.

Every day, the traversal delegates things to their cronies, and only grasps the financial power, military power, and personnel power. Every year, we hold a meeting to approve the budget and personnel appointments and dismissals, and after confirming that the scientific and technological research and development are on the right track, the teaching and research and development tasks are taught to students and other professors. Why don't you seize the opportunity to travel abroad?

"Have you done all the drawings in the past few years? Are there 500 boxes? ”

"Teacher, this spectacle is so great that it doesn't promise much more than the Dunhuang I've been to. It took more than 70,000 sheets of paper to paint the Buddha statues and figures inside. Including all the construction and decoration of the six views and renderings, the drawings brought five hundred boxes had just run out.

Although many local Buddhists also gathered here to build a small town, most of our medicines and building consumables were consumed. Is it possible to return to your home country after completing the first stage to recuperate? I don't think those two small countries will move this special zone. ”

"You've got a good idea of making this a special zone. But now the industry here is still very simple, and there is no one to consume when we are gone. The Buddhist stronghold with no source of income was still difficult to sustain under the siege of Hinduism. We can bring the Srivijaya, oh, it was the forces of Sri Buddha who came here. After all, the power of Buddhism is still very strong within us. Buddhism in Southeast Asia as a whole is still a tool for our strategy, and in the future, de-Indianization will have to fight at Hinduism. Neither Confucianism nor Taoism in China is suitable for this black face, so they have to rely on Buddhism. We spent money on the restoration of Borobudur, but it was nothing compared to the goodwill and goodwill of the entire Sri Buddha and the Buddhists in Java. ”

"In the future, if you pass through India and West Asia, will you also use this weapon?"

"Anyway, the areas where there are Shakyamuni relics stupas are all places where the light of the Buddha shines!" Zhao Shouzhong looked at the beautiful silhouette of Borobudur in the afterglow of the setting sun and said with a smile.

"I see!" Zhang Bo thought to himself that the teacher really deserved to be a generation of grandmasters. Even all Hindu countries are not taken into account, as if they were fish on a chopping block. (To be continued.) )
