Chapter 009: Zhou Yu's Death

Although Liu Bei took Yizhou in history, before Liu Bei, Zhou Yu was ready to launch an offensive against Yizhou, but unfortunately Zhou Yu fell seriously ill and died before he traveled.

[Born in a family, following Sun Ce]

Zhou Yu, whose name is Gongjin, is a native of Shu County, Lujiang County. His cousin Zhou Jing and Zhou Jing's son Zhou Zhong were all lieutenants of the Han Dynasty, and later Zhou Yu's father Zhou Shang also served as Danyang Taishou, so it can be said that Zhou Yu is an out-and-out son of a family.

Zhou Yu and Sun Ce were good at the general angle when they were young, and then Sun Ce went south to crusade against Liu Xuan to Danyang, Zhou Yu strongly supported Sun Ce, and followed Sun Ce to the south, defeated Liu Xuan's subordinates Zhenrong, Xue Li and others, and finally occupied Qu'a and forced away Yangzhou Mu Liu Xuan. After Sun Ce defeated Liu Xuan, he let Zhou Yu return to the north.

Then Yuan Shu appointed Yuan Yin to replace Zhou Shang as Danyang Taishou, Zhou Yu followed Zhou Shang to Shouchun, Yuan Shu found that Zhou Yu was able to use him for his own use, but Zhou Yu did not want to be Yuan Shu's subordinate, so he asked for an external transfer, and Yuan Shu allowed it.

After Sun Ce and Yuan Shu broke up, Zhou Yu left Yuan Shu and went south, after Sun Ce learned about it, he greeted Zhou Yu with a grand etiquette and gave him a heavy responsibility.

In the fourth year of Jian'an (199), Sun Ce led the army to break through Anhui City and obtained the two daughters of Qiaogong, both of whom were beautiful and beautiful. Sun Ce is from Na Da Qiao, and Zhou Yu Na is Xiao Qiao. According to the "Biography of Jiang Biao", Sun Ce also said to Zhou Yu about this matter at that time: "Although the daughters of the Duke of Qiao have suffered from war and displacement, they are fortunate to have the two of us as sons-in-law. ”

Now many people think that Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao are the wives of Sun Ce and Zhou Yu respectively, which is not right, at that time, Er Qiao was actually the spoils of war obtained by Sun Ce after conquering Anhui City, and their status was not worthy of Sun Ce and Zhou Yu, and at that time, Sun Ce and Zhou Yu were not young as ancient people, and they should have already had wives, not to mention that the word used in "The Biography of Zhou Yu" is obviously "Na".

So whether it is Da Qiao or Xiao Qiao, they are at most just the concubines of Sun Ce and Zhou Yu, and they don't have much status, as for Qiao Gong, he may be a famous family in that area, and it can't be Qiao Xuan of the Third Duke, because the age is not right.

In the fifth year of Jian'an (200), Sun Ce died, Sun Quan inherited the great cause of Jiangdong, Zhou Yu led the army to the funeral, and stayed by Sun Quan's side in Wu County to serve as the central guard. He had a heavy army, treated Sun Quan with the courtesy of a monarch and a minister, and was in charge of military and political affairs together with Changshi Zhang Zhao, helping Sun Quan control the Jiangdong group.

[Loyalty to Sun Quan, rejection of Cao Cao]

In history, not only did Yuan Shu want Zhou Yu to use it for himself, but Cao Cao also heard about his talent, and even sent his friend Jiang Gan to persuade Zhou Yu to surrender, but Zhou Yu refused.

According to the "Biography of Jiang Biao", Cao Cao knew earlier that Zhou Yu was young and talented, and Jiang Gan's hometown Jiujiang County was adjacent to Zhou Yu's hometown Lujiang County, and Jiang Gan was Zhou Yu's childhood classmate and friend, and he was able to speak well, so he sent Jiang Gan to see Zhou Yu, hoping to persuade Zhou Yu to leave Sun Quan and join him.

Zhou Yu met with Jiang Gan and said to Jiang Gan: "Ziyi is good and hard, and he travels far to be a lobbyist for the Cao family? Jiang Gan said: "I am separated from the state of the foot, and I am separated from the middle, and I hear the fanglie from afar, so I come to talk about the broad, and look at the elegant rules, and the cloud lobbyist, is it not a deceit?" Zhou Yu said: "Although I am not as good as Kui and Kuang, I can listen to the strings and appreciate the music, and I know the elegant music." Then he ate with Jiang Gan. Three days later, Zhou Yu invited Jiang Gan to visit the military camp, and invited the waiter to show his clothes and treasures during the banquet, and said to Jiang Gan: "The husband is in the world, meets the master of the confidant, entrusts the righteousness of the monarch and the minister, and the grace of the flesh and blood inside, the words and deeds are subordinate, and the blessings and misfortunes are shared. Jiang Gan smiled but never spoke. But after going back, praising Zhou Yu's high elegance to Cao Cao was not something that could be described by words, that is, he was persuaded to give up the idea of surrendering.

After Sun Ce's death, Zhou Yu wholeheartedly assisted Sun Quan, and defeated Cao Cao with a small army in the Battle of Chibi, and then went up the river, defeated Cao Ren to conquer Jiangling, and completely expelled Cao Cao's forces from the south of the Yangtze River.

Later, Zhou Yu persuaded Liu Bei to take the opportunity to put him under house arrest while in Jiangdong, but Sun Quan thought it was too risky and did not listen.

[Preparing for the Western Expedition, Seriously Ill and Dying]

After Zhou Yu occupied Jiangling, Sun Quan appointed Zhou Yu as a partial general and concurrently served as the Taishou of Nanjun. Xiajun, Hanchang, Liuyang, and Zhouling were his Fengyi, and he was stationed in Jiangling and was responsible for the war on the Western Front.

At that time, Liu Zhang was serving as the pastor of Yizhou, and Zhang Lu was invaded by Kou in the north, so Zhou Yu went to Jingkou to meet Sun Quan and said: "Now Cao Cao has just suffered a setback, and he is worried about his internal turmoil, and he will not be able to fight against you. Please allow me to march with Sun Yu, the general of Fenwei, to capture Shu, and then annex Zhang Lu after Shu, and then leave Fenwei there to hold on, so as to echo with Ma Chao's reinforcements, and I will come back with you to occupy Xiangyang and attack Cao Cao, so that there is hope for the capture of the north. ”

Sun Quan agreed. Zhou Yu returned to Gangneung and prepared to pack, but when he passed through Baqiu, he fell ill and died at the age of 36.

The reason why Zhou Yu died so early is likely to be related to the trauma he suffered in the Battle of Jiangling, when Zhou Yu was injured, in order to stabilize the morale of the army, forcibly suppressed the injury, although there is no record of this afterwards, but Zhou Yu is very likely to leave sequelae because he did not recuperate well this time.

After Zhou Yu's death, Sun Quan mourned in plain clothes, touching all his subordinates. When Zhou Yu's coffin was returned to Wu County, Sun Quan went to Wuhu to greet him, and all the expenses for the funeral were not lacking. Later, an edict was issued: "The late generals Zhou Yu and Cheng Pu, and their family Tianke, cannot ask them to pay taxes and serve." At the beginning, Zhou Yu was treated by Sun Ce as a friend, and Sun Ce's mother asked Sun Quan to treat Zhou Yu with respect for his brother. At that time, Sun Quan's status was still a general, and the generals and guests only practiced general etiquette to him, but Zhou Yu was the first to show him respect and courtesy to Sun Quan's courtiers.

According to the "Jiangbiao Biography", when Liu Bei returned from Jingkou, Sun Quan took a big ship to Feiyun and saw him off with more than ten people including Zhang Zhao, Qin Song, and Lu Su, and everyone held a large-scale banquet to say goodbye. Zhang Zhao, Lu Su and others went out first, only Sun Quan and Liu Bei stayed to talk, and after talking for a while, Liu Bei sighed Zhou Yu and said to Sun Quan: "Zhou Gongjin's civil and military strategy is a talent only among ten thousand people, looking at his broad measure, I'm afraid he won't be a courtier for a long time." ”

After Zhou Yu defeated Cao Cao in Chibi, Cao Cao said: "I didn't lose unjustly!" Later, he wrote to Sun Quan and said: "During the Battle of Chibi, I happened to encounter an epidemic, and I had to burn the ship and retreat, but Zhou Yu gained a false name." "Because Zhou Yu is famous, both Liu Bei and Cao Cao are suspected of slandering him. Later, Zhou Yu died, and Sun Quan said in tears: "Gongjin has the capital to assist the emperor, and now he suddenly has a short life, what good do I have!" ”

After Sun Quan was proclaimed emperor, he also said to the ministers: "If it weren't for Liu Jin, the Duke of Zhou, I wouldn't be able to be the emperor." ”
