Chapter 045: Yiyang Deng Shizai
In history, Zhong Hui and Deng Ai are more ruthless, and here I also evaluate the two, in addition, Deng Ai actually died quite resentfully, and I personally think that Sima Zhao is sorry for Deng Ai.
【Zhong Hui and Deng Ai】
Zhong Hui and Deng Ai are both heroes and famous generals who destroyed Shu in the late Wei period, here we will first take a look at the background experience of the two.
Deng Ai was single-handedly promoted by Sima Yi, and had been reused during Sima Shi's period, Sima Shi adopted Deng Ai's advice many times, and Deng Ai also went south with Sima Shi to crusade against Biqiu Jian and Wen Qin. But during the Sima Zhao period, although Deng Ai rose step by step because of his repeated military exploits, the relationship with Sima Zhao was relatively limited, and Deng Ai once opposed Sima Zhao's attack on Shu in history, and Sima Zhao sent the chief bookkeeper to Deng Aijun as Sima, looking for an opportunity to persuade, and Deng Ai was ordered.
Compared with Deng Ai, Zhong Hui and Sima Zhao had a much closer relationship, after Sima Shi's death, Cao Chao used this opportunity to try to seize power and let Sima Zhao guard Luoyang, Sima Zhao led the troops back to Luoyang under the advice of Zhong Hui and others, and successfully controlled the situation. When Sima Zhao crusaded against Zhuge Day, Zhong Hui also accompanied him, and Sima Zhao also used Zhong Hui's suggestion to separate Quan Yi, Quan Duan, Quan Pian, Quan Ji and others in Shouchun City, forcing them to surrender and finally break Shouchun. When Sima Zhao was determined to destroy Shu, the ministers were basically opposed, and only a few people such as Zhong Hui firmly supported Sima Zhao.
Therefore, compared with Deng Ai, Zhong Hui can be regarded as Sima Zhao's descendant, Deng Ai is incomparable in this regard, Sima Yi and Sima Shi are more trusting of Deng Ai than Sima Zhao.
Before the invasion of Shu, Deng Ai belonged to the local system, and once opposed the invasion of Shu, not Sima Zhao's lineage, while Zhonghui belonged to the central system, Sima Zhao's lineage, and vigorously supported the Southern Expedition. So in the end, Sima Zhao took Zhong Hui as the commander and led more than 100,000 troops to attack Shu, while Deng Ai's troops were only about two or three percent of Zhong Hui's, assisting Zhong Hui to attack Shu.
Because the military strength led by him is very disparity, and the status is not the same, so Deng Ai had to deal with the strong enemy Jiang Wei with Zhuge Xu, and Zhong Hui led the main force to easily attack Hanzhong, which opened the door, Zhong Hui himself led many troops and his skills were not bad, so he captured Hanzhong, suppressed Jiang Wei to the Sword Pavilion, and got most of the military achievements, if it wasn't for Deng Ai's surprise attack and direct destruction of Shu Han, the credit would not be able to surpass Zhong Hui.
In terms of military affairs, Deng Ai has a lot of military exploits on the Western Front and the Eastern Front, and directly destroyed Shu Han, Zhong Hui is relatively average, without Deng Ai, Shu Han is difficult to be destroyed by Wei at one time, Deng Ai's military ability is still significantly stronger than Zhong Hui, it can only be said that Zhong Hui is not bad, but Deng Ai may be able to enter the top 100 in the entire ancient Chinese history, not Zhong Hui can be compared.
In the third year of Jianzhong (782), Yan Zhenqing, the ceremonial envoy, suggested to Tang Dezong that sixty-four famous generals in ancient times be posthumously crowned and set up temples for them to enjoy, including "Wei Taiwei Deng Ai". At the same time, only Zhang Liao, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhou Yu, Lu Meng, Lu Xun, and Lu Kang were included in the list of temple enjoyment. In the fifth year of Xuanhe (1123), the Song dynasty set up temples for ancient famous generals in accordance with the practice of the Tang Dynasty, and Deng Ai was also included among the seventy-two famous generals. In the "Biography of Seventeen History and Hundred Generals" written during the Northern Song Dynasty, Deng Ai is also among them.
【Rehabilitating Deng Ai】
In history, Deng Ai's death was very unjust, and he did have some arrogance and pride later, but the culpability could not reach the point of death, and Sima Zhao was obviously a little irresponsible in Deng Ai's sentence.
There were four people related to Deng Ai's killing, the first was himself, the second was Zhong Hui, who framed him, the third was Wei Qian, who sent people to hunt him down, and the last one was Sima Zhao, who was in power.
First of all, Deng Ai was indeed a little proud and complacent after destroying Shu, and he followed the previous practices of the Eastern Han general Deng Yu without authorization, divided the Shu Han officials, and also made plans in Shu to further destroy the Eastern Wu, which made Sima Zhao very dissatisfied, coupled with the false accusations of Zhong Hui and others, Sima Zhao finally decided to send Wei Qian to escort him back to Luoyang.
However, although Deng Ai did something excessive, it was not too out of line, and Deng Ai's hometown Deng Yu was not punished by Liu Xiu for similar things, as for Shangshu, because Zhong Hui did something wrong, it may not be true, and Deng Ai is in Chengdu (Cheng) Capital, Zhong Hui is in the north, Zhong Hui is the coach again, Deng Ai is difficult to detect, Deng Ai's own guilt is not big, but he was framed.
Secondly, for Zhong Hui, after the fall of Shu, he himself led the main force of Wei, and Jiang Wei led most of the elite troops of Shu Han to surrender to him, so Zhong Hui's ambition rose all at once. At that time, Zhuge Xu had been sent away by Zhong Hui, and only one Deng Ai was too threatening, so Zhong Hui had to deal with Deng Ai if he wanted to rebel, but he didn't want to startle the snake and let Sima Zhao be on guard, so it was impossible to say that he threatened Deng Ai's life, and Zhong Hui let Deng Ai be escorted back to Luoyang like Zhuge Xu.
The person who really wanted Deng Ai's life was Wei Qian, not Zhong Hui, Zhong Hui didn't see the attempt to kill Deng Ai from beginning to end, although he framed Deng Ai, but he just wanted Deng Ai to be driven away like Zhuge Xu, so that he could be in power alone, so that he could rebel calmly. After Zhong Hui's rebellion failed, Deng Ai was actually whitewashed, everyone already knew that he was wronged, and Deng Ai's subordinates also took the opportunity to rescue Deng Ai.
At this time, Wei Qian cleaned up the mess and became the de facto controller of the Wei army, because he had framed Deng Ai with Zhong Hui, he simply didn't do anything, and sent someone to kill Deng Ai, and Deng Ai died in a daze.
Then the most deplorable thing happened, Sima Zhao, the ruler of the Wei state, acquiesced in Wei Qiang's approach, and killed Deng Ai's rest of the sons even though he knew that Deng Ai was framed, and sent his grandsons to the frontier. Sima Zhao couldn't have done this because he was afraid of threats, after all, Deng Ai was already dead and couldn't threaten others. Why didn't Sima Zhao rehabilitate Deng Ai? Because Sima Zhao is also shirking responsibility.
Zhong Hui framed Deng Ai and plotted rebellion, Wei Qian was responsible, and Sima Zhao couldn't escape. First of all, when Zhong Hui changed the letter, Sima Zhao didn't notice that it was already a mistake, although he was suspicious of Zhong Hui, but among Zhong Hui and Deng Ai, he finally chose to believe in his cronies Zhong Hui, and sent someone to directly escort Deng Ai, so that Zhong Hui could take the opportunity to make trouble, this black pot Sima Zhao has a share, if Sima Zhao rehabilitates Deng Ai, it means that he caught the wrong person earlier, which is equivalent to slapping himself in the face, so Sima Zhao simply made mistakes again and again.
Deng Ai actually died very unjustly, Wei Qian killed him, Sima Zhao also shirked his responsibility and admitted this unjust, false and wrongful case, although Sima Yan re-established his own grandson Deng Lang as Langzhong, but can this be regarded as Deng Ai's rehabilitation?
