Chapter 91: The Monk's Diary (I)
Kyoto Koryuji Temple (built in 622 by order of Prince Shotoku and is the headquarters of the Shingon sect.) The temple is designated as the No. 1 National Treasure of the Asuka period because it is one of the most outstanding temple buildings in the Asuka period. Venerable Guanghai, the head of the temple where the statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva is half-kneeling and meditating, suddenly felt a palpitation, and this unprecedented sudden symptom made him pay great attention to it. His intuition told him that he was going to be caught in a huge storm, just like the great creation of Kobo Daishi Kukai, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, and that an opportunity to make him happen would appear in front of him.
Kobo Master Kukai was the first person to be proficient in Sanskrit, and his book "Sanskrit Sitan Character Interpretation" created the conditions for the spread of Sanskrit in the Sanskrit text. "The Truth and Meaning of Sound and Words" became the first philosophical work on language and philosophy in this book; The Shingon sect founded by him has been running for thousands of years and has not faded to this day; "The Theory of the Ten Dwelling Minds" is an epoch-making work in the history of Buddhism; He borrowed Chinese characters from cursive script to create the hiragana of the 曰本文字文字, and also compiled the first Chinese dictionary in the history of the 曰本 - "The Name of the Seal Li" (a total of 30 volumes); His works have always been regarded as treasures in Chinese poetry, and there are a large number of editions, manuscripts, and annotations that have been handed down to the world. "The Secret Mansion of Wenjing" is a very important historical material for the study of Chinese poetry; He was also an outstanding calligrapher, and was known as the "Three Calligraphers" along with Emperor Saga and Tachibana Yoshisa; Not only that, but he also founded the first national public school in the history of the country; At the same time, he introduced the advanced production technologies of mining, road construction, water conservancy, and bridge building in the Tang Dynasty, and personally participated in the construction of water conservancy and other practical projects...... The abundance of achievements is still impressive after a thousand years!
If Guanghai wants to surpass him, he must surpass him in all these aspects, which is simply a wild fantasy that is as difficult as reaching the sky. He surpasses him in foreign languages, philosophy, sects, writings, national languages, translations, history, calligraphy, education, engineering technology, and so on, unless he directly becomes a Buddha.
"Oh no, host, a group of Song people came to Kyoto, claiming to be high-ranking officials of the fourth grade, and among them, there are writers like Zhao Shouzhong and Zhao Liren!" A small novice rushed into the courtyard in a panic and reported.
"Isn't that great? Isn't it very good for high-ranking officials and literary masters to go to Kyoto, and it's not on fire! Why are you so flustered? ”
"Those high-ranking officials of the Song Kingdom want you to go! The ministers of the Manchu Dynasty want to see with their own eyes the master who wrote the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West! The one who compiled the Four Books and Five Classics, Li Ji and Li Benhua, is also among them, and he is the one who asks you to discuss the Dharma by name! The dignitaries all over the street were about to burst the temple gates. ”
Hearing this, the throbbing in Guanghai's heart erupted again, and he thought to himself, "Could this be the source of the intuition that transcends the ancestor?" I didn't go to China to study the scriptures, but there were nobles who came to preach and preach the Fa, no wonder I woke up in the morning with a light mind, deaf ears and clear eyes, this is a happy event! But if you don't handle it well, it can turn into a disaster. ”
"You immediately open the temple gate and bring in the ministers, and I will ask the truth. Later, I will tell my disciples to come out with great energy, clean the temple, and wait for the guests to come so as not to lose their manners. Gwanghae instructed his disciples to prepare to welcome guests. In history, no high-ranking official of the Central Empire of the mainland came to the islands, and although the envoys or canonized personnel of the past dynasties were official status, their rank was too low and their reputation was not enough to be compared with these distinguished guests. Even if I used the etiquette of the emperor, I would not feel that it was wrong.
"Lord Nayan is here, please take a seat. It's to ask to see the sages of the Song Dynasty who insist on not seeing guests! If the old man knew that the dignitaries of the kingdom had ordered me alone, he would never dare to meet them first. Your lord's words of entrustment must be brought, and you must be allowed to see the legendary departed and Benhuajun. Guanghai looked at the court minister with eyes full of please, eagerness, and expressed determination and confidence.
"There is Master Lao Guanghai, every time we say that we read the masterpiece of the Emperor at home, every time we wait for the Song Dynasty to bring the words and update the content to go crazy, if we can see him in person this time, it is a rare luck for a thousand years, if we can come close to ask one or two, hear a sentence or two, and get one or two ink heirlooms, that is our supreme glory.
I heard that they were envoys to Goryeo, and they came to Yuben because they were lost at sea, and the first guide they met was still Taira Masamori of Fengpu County of Nagato Province (required for the plot), and it was he who recommended to the Song envoy to visit Kyoto and meet Master Gwanghae, and asked the two to make sure that the Song envoy stayed a few more days, and did not return to the Great Song or go to Goryeo immediately. ”
"Yes, I also heard that the huge ship on which the Song envoy rode carried a large number of exquisite goods, and there were as many as 50,000 materials on just one ship (3,000 tons is equivalent to 60,000 stones, that is, 60,000 materials, excluding the ballast and some food and fresh water, the load I estimated was very accurate) These goods flowed into thousands of stones in Fengpu County alone, causing local prices to skyrocket, and the money in circulation in the market increased dozens of times. Dazaifu, as the direct person in charge of the mainland trade department, is naturally extremely concerned about the good news for the Song trade.
I will definitely live up to expectations, and the ministers who came to Guanglong Temple are very relieved, and this sea of light can also gain great benefits from the trade with the Song Dynasty. Monastic life also tended to be extravagant during this period. Buddhism is very closely integrated with the state and society, politics and life, and religious ceremonies are held on all occasions. In order to pray for the peace of the country, the monks are summoned to chant in the Zigeng Palace, the prince is to gather the monks to pray for blessings, the palace is built to do Buddhist things, and the monks are called to chant the scriptures when epidemics, droughts and wind disasters occur. Dozens of monks are invited, hundreds of people are invited, and those who chant sutras for a few days and many can last for several months.
When practicing Buddhism, it is necessary to have a peacock tail, two frames of Da Mancha Luo, seven zhang of plain clothes, seven zhang of Su Qihe, seven of Mi Qihe, famous incense (white sandalwood, Shen Shui incense), five treasures (gold, silver, glass, pearls, crystal), five medicines (ginseng, order, asparagus, liporice, white mustard seed), five spices (smoked land, white sandalwood, Suhe, borneol, rest), five grains (rice, soybeans, adzuki beans, barley, flax), etc., many of which need to be imported, especially spices. In the sixth year of Tianping (734 A.D.) and the eighth year (736 A.D.), the Empress of Pingcheng Palace gave Horyu Temple the following spices: 715 taels of smoked land incense, 96 taels of Shenshui incense, 788 taels of light incense, 219 taels of green wood incense, 1,533 taels of white sandalwood, 84 taels of clove incense, 70 taels of benzoin, 96 taels of sweet pine incense, and 12 taels of Suhe incense. [9] These spices are only one of the largest temples in one temple, not counting other small temples, but the total number of spices required for a year is considerable if the famous temples of the Nara and Heian periods, such as Yakushi-ji Temple, Motoko-ji Temple, Kofuku-ji Temple, Daan-ji Temple, Todai-ji Temple, Enryaku-ji Temple, and Sonojo-ji Temple, are combined.
