In June 1940, the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army was combined into the new 8th Brigade of the 129th Division, and the 3rd Regiment of the 7th Regiment and the Legacy Column were combined into the 24th Regiment of the New 8th Brigade, with Xu Yushan as the commander. When the cadres and soldiers saw this kind of scene for the first time, they were all overjoyed and excited, and they all geared up to fight, and their desire for war was unprecedentedly high.

At that time, Japanese troops were stationed in all counties under the three subdivisions of southern Hebei. Handan was the base camp of the Japanese invaders, mainly the first independent mixed brigade of the Japanese army. In the daimyo, a wing of the brigade was stationed. In Quzhou, Yongnian, Quang Binh, Feixiang and Jize counties, a squadron of the brigade was stationed each. In Guantao, Linqing and Qiu counties, a squadron of the 10th Independent Mixed Brigade of the Japanese Army stationed in Liaocheng, Shandong Province was stationed.

The Japanese invaders, taking advantage of their advanced weaponry and occupying the county towns and important towns along the highways, often swept our base areas. In the second phase of the campaign from September 23 to early October, Xu Yushan led the 24th Regiment as part of the first smashing team to attack the Handan Guangping section of the Handan Daming Highway in Panzhai. On September 25, the regiment engaged in a fierce battle with more than 200 Japanese puppet troops in the area of Nanzhongbao.

In early October, the three regiments of the New 8th Brigade began to disperse in the direction of Quzhou, Yongnian, Quanping, Feixiang, Guantao and Linqing, and carried out activities as regimental units. The main task was to help the masses in the anti-Japanese base areas to carry out the struggle to reduce rents and interest rates.

At that time, the third battalion of the 22nd Regiment was located in the vicinity of Quzhou County and Yongnian County, and the second battalion of the 22nd Regiment was stationed in Dalianzhai Village, 20 miles southeast of Quzhou County. At this time, the enemy in Quzhou County gathered a large group of troops, armed with a 13-type 75-mm mountain gun, and suddenly launched an attack on the position of the 2nd Battalion stationed in Dalianzhai.

Under the cover of heavy artillery fire, the enemy quickly captured the position of the 2nd Battalion at the west end of Dalian Village. All the soldiers of the 2nd Battalion were caught in a bitter battle, and the situation was very critical.

At this time, Brigade Commander Wang Jinshan, who was inspecting the work of the 2nd Battalion, immediately ordered the cavalry messenger to notify the 3rd and 1st Battalions of the 22nd Regiment to go to Dalian Village to rescue the 2nd Battalion, and quickly notified the 24th Regiment in the vicinity to also flank the enemy in Dalian Village.

After Xu Yushan received the order, he hurriedly marched to Dalian Village to participate in the battle.

When Xu Yushan arrived at Dalian Village, the battle in Dalian Village was in full swing. The Japanese invaders, numbering four or five hundred, had already invaded the village of Dalian Zhai from the west. All the commanders and fighters of the 2nd Battalion were fighting the enemy house by house in the village.

The third battalion of the 22nd regiment had already entered the battle, and they entered the village with the strength of one company to assist the second battalion in counterattacking the enemy. With the strength of one company, he attacked from the south of Dalian Zhai Village to the west to prevent the enemy from encircling the 2nd Battalion from the south of Dalian Zhai. The remaining two companies made a detour from the south of Dalian Zhai to the southwest of Dalian Zhai and surrounded the enemy.
