Chapter 8: The Real Plan

Enemy.
If we put aside other objective factors and only talk about Britain and France, it is like playing chess, Britain and France represent Chu and Han, and the English Channel is that shallow river boundary, and the two sides arrange their troops and use pawns, artillery, chariots, and horses to fight in this square inch.
However, the struggle between great powers is not destined to be as simple as playing chess, rather, chess itself is an expression of extreme simplification, and it is only done for the sake of proliferation. In the real national conflict, in addition to the two countries that are the parties concerned, we also need to bring in bystanders, and bring in the forces of the third party, the fourth or even the fifth party.
And in this Anglo-French dispute, the third force is the Church.
"As for us, we can only be regarded as a chess piece at most, and we are not at all comparable to these chess players."
Still in the blacksmith's shop, Magnus sat on the floor with an axe, a sword, and a cross in front of him.
"I'll use this axe instead of William."
Magnus put the axe down in front of him.
"Then use this sword instead of France."
Magnus then placed his sword directly across from the axe.
"Finally, use this cross to represent the church."
Odegar sat on the ground as well, and he didn't care even if his gorgeous robes were stained with dust, because he had a hunch that what His Royal Highness said was something that would really change his life!
And these three things are not bad at all, William is a Norman, the Normans are a branch of the Vikings, good at axes, even if it is a Norman iron horse, in addition to a spear used to charge the battle, the melee weapon is mostly used with a battle axe.
And France, the country where the flower of knights blooms, the sword is the standard equipment of knights.
As for the cross, there is no need to say more about that.
"Why William and France are rivals, do you understand?"
Magnus stretched the axe forward, just enough for the hilt to touch the tip of the sword, and then asked Odegar, who was pondering and wondering what His Highness meant by doing so.
"It's Normandy, Normandy."
After waiting for a long time, he didn't wait for an answer, and in desperation, Magnus could only reveal it himself.
"William became King of England - do not be unconvinced, we must admit that he is stronger now - he is King of England, so what is his dominance in France? Is it counted on the head of France, or on the head of Britain? β
Odegar suddenly brightened.
No monarch would tolerate the division of his country, even if he was trapped on the Γle-de-France and controlled only one-fifteenth of the country.
However, with William's temperament, the devil believed that he would willingly give up Normandy.
That's his lair!
For more than 100 years, the Normans have made Normandy's management impregnable, advanced management methods and a set of effective training systems, so that the Normans can pull out an army of more than 3,000 people in Normandy at any time - all of them have undergone basic training and have good combat effectiveness!
For William, if he were given a choice between England and Normandy, he would rather give up England than lose his fortune; England can fight back if it is lost, Normandy is lost, and he can't even find a place to recruit soldiers!
This is an irreconcilable contradiction, and sooner or later William and France will have to do a fight for this place.
"But we don't know when they will fight, or even whether they will fight in our lifetime, so France can only be an ally, but not a dependent."
Magnus said, and Odegar suddenly realized that he couldn't do anything but nod.
"And then there's the church."
Magnus then picked up the cross, which symbolized the church, and placed it in a very delicate position. This location, very close to England and close to France, is an isosceles triangle in layman's terms.
"Don't ignore the power of the Church, the peasants are so devotive to their faith that they are poor, and the same is true for the soldiers, and once the Pope issues a fatwa of excommunication, that person must first appease his men before going to war."
Odega, a Saxon from the countryside of Europe and a pagan background, said, "We really don't understand your beliefs.
"And, most importantly, this one."
As he spoke, Magnus shifted the position of the cross slightly downwards to the direction of France, and the balance of the triangle was broken.
"The day before yesterday, William publicly rejected the Pope's request for the implementation of the 'ecclesiastical ordination law.'"
Free ordination and ecclesiastical ordination were the dividing point between clerical and royal power in the Middle Ages.
To put it simply, if the authorization of the church is implemented, then it is equivalent to the church having extrajudicial jurisdiction in this country, and can rely on this extralegal jurisdiction to manipulate the state form step by step, and finally achieve the goal of the church power being higher than the royal power.
Of course, this was not a big deal in the first place, and although the power of the Church was good, it was impossible to force every country on the continent to implement the ordination of the Church. With this power, the church simply unified it directly, and what are you doing with all these conspiracies.
But, crucially, when William asked the Pope to grant him the title to attack England, he agreed to all of these conditions.
Those who play religion rely on their mouths and faces, which makes the Pope's face go wherever it goes!
"In the end, here we are."
Magnus picked up an inconspicuous pebble from the ground and placed it between the axe, the sword, and the cross, and Odegar's face twitched twice.
"Don't think that's an exaggeration, compared to them, our strength is so weak."
Sensing the changes in Odegar, Magnus raised his eyes and explained, and continued:
"The fact that we are still in existence is entirely the result of a three-way game, France and the Church kept us, but it also made us hostage to them; As soon as they don't need it, or if they go to war, we will immediately become abandoned rocks, pathfinders, and we will be overturned in a moment. β
Therefore, it is imperative to jump out of this chessboard, to change one's identity, from a chess piece to a chess player; Brittany is the place I chose. β
"Capture Brittany, to the north, we can threaten England proper, to the east, we can also radiate to Normandy, once the end of the war begins, it only takes a surprise army to force William to be unable to take care of each other; Moreover, we can surrender to the King of France, even if it is a temporary allegiance to him and a tribute to him, and Louis VII must have been quite happy to see William have another formidable enemy, not to mention that he still has taxes; Finally, we maintain a good relationship with the Church and give the illusion of obedience to the Pope. Once the time comes, the three parties will exert their forces at the same time, and William will be wiped out in an instant! β
Wonderful......
It's so exciting!
Odegar couldn't even speak.
Such a scheme, such a scheme...... Even if the great god Woden himself descended to earth, he couldn't think of a better plan, right?
Odegar looked at the figure of His Royal Highness the Prince squatting on the ground, although he was squatting, it was so majestic, and suddenly tears came out.
Your Majesty! His Royal Highness the Prince is so smart, there is hope for the restoration of the country! Hopefully!
β¦β¦ To be honest, seeing Odegar crying like a child in front of him, the corners of Magnus's eyes moistened a little.
This is not moving, but just a tribute to a veteran, a loyal courtier.
"Your Highness! What else needs to be done in order to accomplish this plan, you just ask! As long as I can return to the country, even if you let me die, I, Odega, will never take a step back! β
PS: For the sake of logic, this chapter is written about real headaches.
ps: In addition, asking for a wave of recommendation votes, even if I am lazy, I occasionally want to rush to the list, which can also make the book sign as soon as possible and give me a little motivation to write a book.
