Because the Red Army's attack could be launched at any time, they had to keep their eyes open for vigilance both day and night. The dwindling number of front-line combatants forced Brigadier General Sherel to make a difficult decision to retreat his remaining personnel into a smaller defensive circle. This decision is relative. Of course, it would have increased the number of Germans on the effective defensive front, but also for the numerically superior Soviet troops, the narrower encirclement also made it more impactful. The daily routine infantry assaults of the Soviet army continued. The dense crowd had no intention of being an excellent live target in front of the desperately defending Germans. Early in the morning of February 12, the Germans were not waiting for the expected tank charge cluster. In areas where previous infantry assaults had not achieved their goals, the Soviet commanders concentrated all their artillery fire and decided to use their "god of war" to deliver the most severe blows to the defenders before throwing tanks.

The first to roar was the Soviet army's 152-mm heavy howitzer, which was also called the "black sow" by German officers and soldiers. Then artillery of other calibers also opened fire, and the dense barrage seemed to destroy all life in the encirclement. Intensive Soviet artillery fire continued throughout the day and night.
