Chapter 136: The Pyongyang Monster

Originally, Shakru thought that his "Bandit Queen", which had been shortlisted for the Italian David Award, must be the winner of the best foreign language film at this Changchun Film Festival, with China's current status in the international film industry, those good films do not bother to participate, to put it mildly, if you are not Chinese, it is impossible to come, but after arriving at the hotel, Shakru was stunned to find that the competition for the best foreign language film is still very fierce.

Although the films from European and American countries did not participate, and all the films that came came were from socialist countries, the films that came to participate this time were very strong. In earlier years, there was a Chinese folk talk about the films of various countries: "Chinese Films, News Bulletins; Vietnamese films, airplane artillery; North Korean movies, crying, laughing, laughing; Romania, cuddle cuddle; Albania, inexplicably; Japanese films, internal ticket sales" But this time, several foreign films have broken through everyone's mindset.

The first is "Monster of Pyongyang" from North Korea. Don't think that monster movies are the preserve of Japan or the United States, and North Korea, the country of Juche ideology, also has them. The monster story, Pulgasari, is from North Korea and was produced in 1985. The movie originated from Jin Erfat's hobby. There were rumors that the director of this film was Kim Erpang, but this rumor is not true, the director is actually South Korean Shin Sang-yu. For his hobby (or to put it mildly, "to develop the North Korean film industry"), Kim Erpang sent agents to kidnap director Shin Sang-ok and his actor's ex-wife in Hong Kong and transport them to North Korea by merchant ship. Of course, Juche said that they went to North Korea of their own free will. arrived in North Korea, and the two got married again.

The story of the movie is relatively simple. In ancient Korea, a group of peasants rebelled because the government was dissatisfied with the government's tyranny, and the old blacksmith was brutally killed. The little monster he pinched with rice before he died came to life after accidentally touching a drop of blood from the blacksmith's daughter. The little monster eats iron and grows up to become a giant monster of great power, and eventually helps the peasants overthrow the government. However, the iron-eating monster continued to eat iron, which would make it impossible for the peasants to work and live, so the blacksmith's daughter had to feed the beast with her body to destroy the iron-eating monster.

Although the story is simple. But the whole movie is not simple at all, with the technical level at the time, this monster film is by no means inferior to Japan's Godzilla and the United States' King Kong, which also shows another less well-known strength of North Korea from the side, that is, animation production, it may be difficult for everyone to imagine that "The Lion King", "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", "A Day in Pompeii", "Gladiator" and other well-known cartoons are all produced by SEK in the form of outsourcing orders.

Another film was "Song of Chance" from Poland, which seemed very bold and avant-garde at the time. The film tells the story of Poland in the 80s of the 20th century, when Whitaker, a young intern at medical school, is in a hurry to catch a train to another city. By the time he arrived at the station, the train had already started. Witaker struggled to catch up. Fate thus branched off into three tributaries, each of which led him into a different social environment.

One way was that he caught the bus, met a Communist Party member, and was encouraged to join the ruling party; The other road led him to the exact opposite path, where he crashed into a guard while chasing a car, was detained, sentenced, and locked up with a ******, and became an "enemy agent" himself; The third way was that he didn't make it to the train. and happened to meet a female classmate in the past, and later got married, practiced medicine, and went abroad on business in a plane crash......

Is life accidental or inevitable? Can serendipity change the trajectory of one's life and thus break inevitability? Or regardless of the many accidents. In the end, there is only one inexorable necessity in life? These are the expressions of "Song of Opportunity" that transcend form, and are also related to a series of political, religious, and moral tortures, forming a speculation on the value of life and the beliefs to which people are attached.

Although the box office of this movie is not very good, whether it is the plot of the film itself or the thoughts expressed, Shakru likes it very much, and he feels that his "Bandit Queen" is acceptable whether it is defeated in the hands of these two movies. But when he was having dinner with Lao Mouzi. I was surprised to find that there were actually two strong opponents who did not appear.

One is the Russian film "Cheka", this movie is not because people are unwilling to come, but because it did not pass the review by the organizing committee, and the organizing committee cannot be blamed for this, because this movie is too real and bloody. The whole movie is just over 80 minutes long, but an hour is devoted to the execution and shooting of prisoners.

In the basement of a detention center, a group of men, women, and children were brought here from the cell, then stripped naked and walked naked to the door, standing with their faces facing it; Each time, it was the same five executioners, who shot at them with their hands and feet; The body was hung headfirst to the ground and then thrown onto a cart and pulled out of the city. The whole process is exceptionally standardized, just like a slaughterhouse.

The Cheka, short for the Committee for the Suppression of Counter-Revolutionaries established at the beginning of the Soviet Union, was an organization on which Lenin relied considerably, and was "an institution that fought against all counter-revolutionaries by extraordinary means" (Lenin's words). For the sake of the newborn Soviets, it is indeed murderous. The name of the Cheka has only existed for more than four years, but the horror caused by this name is haunting the history of mankind like a ghost. This film "Cheka" filmed by Russia shows the audience a bloody picture through the eyes of a local leader in the Cheka. The film is indeed quite bloody, with gunshots and corpses torturing your nerves and testing the limits of your patience.

The other is that the organizing committee wants to invite the competition, but people are reluctant to come, this movie may not be seen by many people, but the original novel should be seen by many people, and they have left a very deep impression, and even brought reference and inspiration to many companies. During the Asian financial crisis, Samsung's chairman Lee Kun-hee called on all 45,000 employees to learn the indomitable spirit of "A Bowl of Soba".

Therefore, the organizing committee felt that this film was very educational, so they wanted to invite it to participate in this Changchun Film Festival, but they were shirked by director Katsumi Nishikawa, and it was because of this incident that the organizing committee issued a task requirement to Lao Mouzi that must be completed.

PS: I still have some feelings about "Cheka", and I will post them in the work. (To be continued.) )
