Chapter 12: The Secret Meeting I
For this task, of course, Rommel is happy to accept, he, the traverser, can just put forward his own requirements to those arms research and development institutions, such as the appearance and performance data of the Leopard tank, or the damn two-layer asymmetrical load wheel of the Tiger tank, anyway, the traverser Rommel can make Germany take fewer detours in weapons research and development, and put forward some of the defects of Germany's weapons in World War II at the beginning of research and development, which is the advantage of the traverser.
In the next few days, Rommel began to visit one by one according to the list on the allocation of funds, and what Germany needs most now is, of course, tanks, and the two German tanks, the Leopard and the Tiger, were not designed by one company. For example, the Leopard is a hull designed by the German MAN Group, a turret designed by Rheinmetall, and the Tiger is a tank that has been developed since 1935 and is also jointly developed by several companies.
Rommel hosted a small, low-key family dinner in his apartment, inviting the heads of various tank manufacturers, such as Daimler, MAN, Rheinmetall, and Henschel.
Of course, Rommel did not understand the development of tanks, he just listed the performance data of the Leopard tank and the Tiger King, along with the exterior drawings and models. You must know that Rommel's painting is still good, and the tank painted is really lifelike. (The illustrations in Rommel's book "Infantry Attack" were drawn by Rommel himself, which is very good!) )
It's not that Rommel ignored the Tiger tank, but the Tiger tank has been developed for several years, and now the design is being modified, which is completely a move to add to the snake, and there is no need for that at all, and the Tiger tank was indeed invincible in the middle of World War II, but it was a little powerless in the later stage, so Rommel asked several major manufacturers to develop the Tiger II tank in advance. (Tiger II is the Tiger King)
Although the armor of the Tiger tank was thick and heavy, it used traditional vertical armor and did not use the more advanced inclined armor design of the time, so that its protection ability was not comparable to its weight. The frontal protection of the Tiger tank is not satisfactory, and the frontal protection is even inferior to that of the Panther tank, which weighs much lighter. Although the Tiger tank, in 41 and 42, was considered the most powerful tank at that time, when the T34-85 and IS-2 were gradually put into the battlefield in 1943, the Tiger became a little incapable of the battlefield. This is an important reason for the discontinuation of Tiger after 44 years.
The Tiger tank did not use the diesel engine commonly used in later tanks, but used a Maybach 700 horsepower gasoline engine, in all fairness, the Maybach engine was also a very good engine at that time, the power was very strong, much stronger than the engines of the same level tanks in the Soviet Union and the United States.
However, the use of gasoline engines makes German tanks often easier to be ignited than Soviet tanks, and the mileage of full fuel is much lower than that of Soviet tanks, but this is obviously a helpless situation, at that time gasoline engines were still the mainstream of tanks, such as the United States also used gasoline engines, and the rare metal materials used to manufacture diesel engines, Germany was quite lacking at that time, German diesel production was not high, synthetic fuel was also gasoline, and the choice of gasoline engine may be the only choice that Germany could make at that time.
Rommel is now unable to let major manufacturers install diesel engines for these tanks, there are two reasons that limit the German tanks to equip diesel engines, the first Germany does not have a high-horsepower diesel engine suitable for installation on tanks, and the marine high-horsepower diesel engine is available in Germany, but it is too large to be installed on the tank at all.
The second is that Germany is desperately short of diesel, and Germany's synthetic oil is gasoline, and if Germany does not seize the oil production areas in the Middle East and Africa, Germany cannot afford to install tanks with diesel engines.
Therefore, Rommel only asked that the double-layer asymmetrical load wheels of the Tiger tank be eliminated and replaced with all-steel symmetrical load wheels, and Rommel did not make any requirements for the other parts, and the Tiger tank could only do this, and the Tiger King was the tank that Rommel wanted the most.
But for the Leopard and King Tiger tanks, Rommel insisted on installing diesel engines, and the ice cars had to be designed according to the drawings and models provided by Rommel. Daimler and Henschel are two companies that produce engines, while the other two companies work on car bodies and turrets, among other things.
When Rommel put a Swiss bank check of $200 million in front of these four manufacturers, all their complaints and lack of cooperation immediately disappeared, and all four manufacturers patted their chests and promised to complete the task within one year.
One year to complete the research and development of the tank and launch, Rommel is still relatively confident in this, Germany has this ability. For example, it took only nine months for Germany to develop and produce the Leopard tank, and as for the initial Leopard that was prone to fire, it was a problem with the engine, and once the Leopard used a diesel engine, all the problems of the Leopard were solved.
As for the development of tanks, Germany's four large-caliber anti-aircraft guns are sufficient, such as the 75, 88, 105, and 120 anti-aircraft guns, which are common to anti-aircraft guns and tank guns, and a lot of manpower and material resources must be saved.
After dealing with the tank and engine, Rommel immediately invited two German research helicopter manufacturers to his home, namely Fokker and Flett. (Companies named after people)
The Fly company is working on the Hummingbird helicopter gunship, and the Fokker company is researching the transport helicopter FA223.
The Hummingbird helicopter is not much different from modern helicopters, but the load is not enough, and it is only a pitiful 500 kilograms. Because the company did not have enough money, they did not use enough power for the aero engines.
Flett has been looking for investors, but no one wants to put money into this extremely risky project, when Flett is anxious about the funds, Rommel appeared, which really made Falk overjoyed, and Fry made very good preparations for this meeting
"General Rommel, you see this is the Hummingbird helicopter we have developed, and I dare say that it is the most perfect helicopter in the world."
Flett gave Rommel a picture of the appearance of the hummingbird helicopter he carried, and next to the picture, there was also the performance data of the hummingbird helicopter. After Rommel saw the hummingbird helicopter, he was really deeply shocked by the German technology, the appearance of the hummingbird helicopter is almost no different from modern helicopters, the only thing missing is the tail propeller.
Rommel then looked at the performance data of the hummingbird helicopter, the 500 kilograms of weight is too low, this load only carries one person and fuel, and there is a G34 machine gun, such a gunship can only be used as a reconnaissance helicopter, and the gap between the gunship and the gunship is too big.
People engaged in technology research and development never like nonsense, and it just so happens that Rommel is the same person, Rommel directly picked up a pencil, and then said and wrote on the appearance drawings of the hummingbird helicopter:
"Dr. Flett, to be honest, although the Hummingbird helicopter is the most advanced in the world, such a helicopter has not yet reached the standard of participating in the war, and my opinion is this, enlarge the size of the Hummingbird helicopter and replace it with a more powerful engine, so that the Hummingbird helicopter can carry a load of more than 2,000 kilograms. Also, in order to increase the flight stability of the helicopter, we can design a tail propeller, which is synchronized with the main propeller, and the size is about 10 to 1! How much will need to be tested by Dr. Falk. ”
