Chapter Fifty-Nine: Back to the Embankment
Although the Chinese youth on the embankment live in Vietnam, and many of them were even born in Vietnam, they cannot get rid of the essence and style of Chinese children.
Five or six years ago, Chinese men and women liked to wear Chinese clothes, and men wore cloth buttoned Tang suits and wide crotch pants, and the color tone was mainly black. Wealthy families also wore silk embroidered with flowers or large flowers to show that there were differences in social class. Women wore black or black cardigans, and only some of the more progressive women wore new clothes with patterns or shades.
In the years after the end of World War II, the small society of the embankment has undergone earth-shaking changes.
Men wore large collars, corporate collars and trousers, women wore wide skirts, blouses or colored skirts, and students wore white and blue trousers and blue skirts, and wore sneakers or leather shoes. The whole mental outlook is very similar to the first few years of reform and opening up in the mainland in later generations, no matter where you are, you will be recognized as Chinese when you look at your face.
Because they have changed with the times, the locals have not changed much.
Regardless of men, women, and children, the clothes are still mainly dressed as three women, and the women all wear a bun on their heads and hats; Young women and schoolgirls like to wear long hair and wear white or light odai colors. Only the young male students from wealthier families are no different from the Chinese youth in appearance, only in language.
Looking at the Chinese students fighting in front of him, and thinking of the Pingdong refugee camp he had just visited, Professor Anderson couldn't help but sigh: "Li, your compatriots are more generous, more compassionate, and more helpful than I imagined. If all the citizens of this city were like you, the few refugee camps on the outskirts would not have to worry about Mr. Prime Minister. β
Most of the overseas Chinese who fled spontaneously from the north lived in the area of Lajia Street (now Nguyen Chi Phuong Street) in the 10th district, which was originally the Yizhuang (cemetery) of the Five Gangs Association.
The Five Gangs used the help of the poor to purchase zinc iron sheets, timber and thatch for those penniless villagers to build sheds, factories, rice mills, shops, wood mills, restaurants...... Hire as many refugees as you can and as many apprentices as you can. Those who have relatives and friends on the embankment have started all kinds of small businesses with the support of relatives and friends, and with the relief food donated by overseas Chinese leaders, the death of starvation will basically not happen.
It is worth mentioning that the major Chinese schools on the embankment have set up teaching points or night schools on Lajia Street to let the children study. Nghe An, Fude and other hospitals also often arrange doctors and nurses to come to visit, in short, except for the unsatisfactory hygiene, other aspects are impeccable.
Tens of thousands of people, without a penny from the government, without even a little assistance from the International Red Cross and the United States government, settled down with the help of their fellow villagers. And it won't be long before they are almost all able to support themselves, and as a Chinese, Li Weimin is very proud.
He raised his arm and glanced at his watch, and said excitedly: "The big rich are businessmen, the small rich are thrifty, and thrift is the virtue of us Chinese." Our ancestors did not want to sit still in their hometown because of the difficult and precarious life, and they encountered years of war, so they had to go overseas for the sake of the rice bowl at home.
The experience was as bumpy as that of its American predecessors on the Mayflower, with some dying in angry seas, others dying in other places, and only a few lucky people were able to reach here after several displacements.
They are hard-working by nature and not extravagant, and in their daily lives, they only seek clothing to cover their bodies, food to satisfy their hunger, shelter from wind and rain, and only to have strength under their feet. Therefore, when they arrived here, they worked day and night, saving food and consumption every day, and accumulating their meager remuneration little by little.
Decades later, everyone has a considerable amount of money, some of them remit back to their hometown to buy land, and some stay here to invest and operate, starting from the smallest business, and so on from generation to generation. β
Professor Anderson pondered, and Li Weimin continued: "Because of the law-based management, diligence, and frugality, some people have changed from small to rich. Even though they were very wealthy, they were still frugal and indulged in their work. From the most successful Guo Tonghe and Guo Yan at the end of the 19th century, to the current 'MSG King', 'Rice King', 'Iron and Steel King', 'Waste Materials King'...... Almost all of them came from a slightly cold background.
Some of them have worked as hotel handymen, shop handymen, street vendors, and some even worked as sidekicks for dancers, and they all have the experience of not having enough to eat, sleeping well, and being discriminated against. And these experiences gave them another virtue in addition to thrift, they liked to participate in social welfare and charity, and gave back to the society as their obligation, so the embankment had a school and a hospital. β
"Your ancestors were one of them?"
"Yes, I'm proud of it."
"Lee, I am convinced that you will be as outstanding a businessman and philanthropist as they are."
"Actually, it already is, don't you think so?"
"Yes, yes, you are now."
As he was talking, a team of Pingchuan soldiers stopped the jeep in front, Ah Cheng jumped out of the car and straightened his military uniform, took out a certificate and handed it over, the officer took it and looked at it, and then walked to the side of the car and looked inside, and when he saw Professor Anderson take off his hat, he immediately raised his hand and saluted, signaled his subordinates to let go, and stepped on a motorcycle to lead the way in front.
Financing is inseparable from the Chinese, and if you want to find the Chinese, you must go back to the embankment.
In order to ensure the smooth implementation of the "Industrial Village Project", Professor Fisher and his senior officials and friends have been putting pressure on the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam. As the military aid and non-military aid programs began to be implemented, and the policy toward Vietnam became clearer, Ambassador Heath could no longer contradict Washington, D.C., and personally telephoned the commander of the French Expeditionary Force, emphasizing that Lee Weimin was an employee of the U.S. agency in Vietnam, and that the Pyongchuan faction, which was under French control, ensure its safety on the embankment.
Lansdale, who is responsible for urging the Vietnamese anti-Vietminh forces to support Ngo Dinh Diem, has a good relationship with Master Li, and made a special visit to the embankment yesterday afternoon, and while suggesting that Le Van Yuan support the new government, he stressed that Master Li was under the protection of the US Government and suggested that he should not act rashly.
There is only one life, and Li Weimin does not think that he has the good fortune to live again.
This morning, I called Nguyen Van Thanh again, the chief of the general staff is much more reliable than the French and the Yankees, first called to warn Le Van Thanh not to cause trouble, and then ordered two battalions of the national army in the suburbs to be stationed in the tenth district, putting on a posture that if you don't give face to the people who dare to touch my protection, I will start a war with you without a coup d'Γ©tat for the time being.
Li Wen is far from being Cixi Lafayette, and he is not crazy enough to dare to declare war on the whole world, not only through the French side and Lansdale to convey to Li Weimin that the embankment is very safe, and he can come whenever he wants. And asked the city police to send an invitation card and invite him to eat at the big world.
