CHAPTER XIX

Manila Bay is located in the southwest of Luzon, the bay is protected by two peninsulas to the east and west, and the vast central plain to the north, and the port of Manila is located in the easternmost part of the bay, where the water is deep and is a natural harbor, where the Spanish built the city of Manila.

Since the Song Dynasty, Chinese merchants have come to Luzon to trade, and many people have lived here. In the Hongwu year of the Ming Dynasty, the king of Luzon sent envoys to the Ming Dynasty three times to pay tribute. In the third year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty, Zheng He went to the West and led a huge fleet to Luzon, that is, he appointed Xu Chalao, the leader of overseas Chinese in Jinjiang, as the governor of Luzon by the edict of Emperor Yongle, and took charge of the country's political, economic, military, and cultural powers, and served for 20 years.

In 1565, the Spanish captured the island of Cebu in the Philippine Islands, and in 1571, the Spaniards invaded Luzon and killed the king of Luzon in the Battle of Manila, and Luzon became a Spanish colony.

Under the guidance of David, the Fuchun arrived at Manila Bay, and soon the Spanish ships came to interrogate, and after learning that it was the Ming maritime merchants who came to trade, the Spaniards were very enthusiastic, and when they saw that David was actually on the Fuchun, the Spaniards shouted excitedly.

Ren Siqi has been learning Spanish with David these days, and his skills have improved dramatically, and he can fully understand everyday conversation.

From the conversation between the Spaniards and David, Ren Siqi learned that after David's fleet was wrecked in the storm, in addition to one sunk and captured by pirates, the third ship returned to Luzon safely, bringing back the news of the wreck. All the Spaniards thought that the other two ships had sunk in the sea, and now they were not thrilled to see David return safely.

From their conversation, Ren Siqi learned that David had lied and did not tell the story of being captured by pirates, but that the ship was destroyed in the shipwreck, and that he had been drifting at sea for many days with a plank, and happened to be rescued by the passing Fuchun, and persuaded the Fuchun to come to Luzon to trade.

The other Spaniards believed David's words, and they thanked the crew of the Fuchun, but unfortunately only Ren Siqi could understand.

After the conversation, the Spanish ship turned around and led the Fuchun into the port of Manila.

David secretly begged Ren Siqi not to tell the other Spaniards about his time being captured by pirates, and Ren Siqi readily agreed.

"Ren, my friend, I will certainly speak well for you in the presence of the Governor, and this trip to Luzon will surely bring you the greatest profit." David embraced Ren Siqi, mounted a horse, and left, going to Manila City to report to the Governor what he had experienced these days.

Fu Chun, the owner of the ship, restrained all the crew members from getting off the ship, and assigned Ren Siqi and Fu Bin to go ashore together.

Manila, however, was very depressed, as David said, and there were no other merchant ships in sight except for a few Spanish sailing ships and the Fuchun in the entire dock.

A river flows into the sea on the north side of the pier, and Ren Siqi has long learned from David's mouth that the river is called the Bashi River, and there is a castle on the south bank of the Bashi River, which is Manila City. There is also a fort next to the castle, with thick barrels pointing to Manila Bay.

From the dock to the shore, you can see a lot of ruins in the distance, which should be the place where the Chinese live, but it was destroyed by the Spanish in the massacre of the Chinese a year ago.

Sure enough, there were no Chinese faces on the shore, only some swarthy native Luzon wandering.

Some Spaniards were waiting on the shore, and they had been looking forward to the merchant ships of the Ming Dynasty for a long time.

"A merchant from the Ming Dynasty, I wonder what kind of goods you brought us?" A bearded Spaniard stepped forward to say hello.

"Raw silk, porcelain, tea, cotton." Ren Siqi said in Spanish.

"Oh God, you speak Spanish." The bearded Spaniard was amazed, "I'm Francis. Kuster. Eldorben, you can call me Francis.

"My name is Ren Siqi, you can call me Ren." Ren Siqi said.

"Dear Ren, I want to talk to you about raw silk, shall we come here?" Francis wanted to pull Ren Siqi aside.

"Francis, you can't dare to do that, I still have something to ask Ren." The chubby Spaniard next to him was not happy.

"Ren, you can call me Melbourne, I am the most powerful businessman in Manila, we can have a good discussion while drinking coffee."

The Spaniards were so direct, in order to compete for business, they actually quarreled on the spot, which made Ren Siqi feel that he should come to Manila this time, and the goods on the ship would be sold at a high price that everyone expected.

However, Ren Siqi felt that the Spaniards in front of him were small traders at best, because the really powerful ones would never argue in person like this, they always planned everything in private.

"Mr. Francis, Mr. Melbourne, and these gentlemen, I'm sorry, I'm not the owner of the merchant ship, so the decision is no longer in my hands, and if you want to talk about business, you have to talk to my boss."

"Dear Ren, I'm going to see your boss, can you introduce me to me?" Francis asked eagerly.

"Of course you can, but not today, you know that we came from the distant Ming Dynasty and came here on a ship for more than 20 days, we are really tired and need to rest for a few days." Ren Siqi politely refused.

The Spanish merchants were disappointed and left, but soon all the people in Manila would know that a Ming merchant ship had arrived at the docks, and that it was time to talk about business.

Ren Siqi returned to Fuchun, told Fu Chun about the situation on the shore, and made an analysis.

"I don't think the Spaniards have any hostility towards the Ming people now, and even desperately want to do business with us, so I don't think you have to worry about it."

Listening to Ren Siqi's words, all the crew cheered, which meant that the goods they brought would be sold quickly, and soon they would return to Daming with a large sum of silver.

"Alright, you can get off the boat, go ahead, and sell your stuff for a good price!" Fu Chun's expression also relaxed, and the crew was allowed to disembark. As for his own bulk goods, he naturally does not go to the docks to set up stalls to sell, and he believes that soon Spanish merchants will come to negotiate business with him.

The crew cheered, and they all happily returned to their cabins, carried out all kinds of goods, and disembarked.

Soon, dozens of stalls were set up on the wharf, and all kinds of goods from Daming were dazzling. The news spread quickly, and many Spaniards came out of Manila to the docks to buy the goods they needed.
