328 When everything becomes legendary

At 13 o'clock in the afternoon of September 10 in the third year of Hongji (1557), the Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima came to an end.

Sasa Narumasa led one of the few Rose Knights of Echigo to succeed in killing Takeda Daizen Daisen Daifu Harunobu by using his usual "Ride Collapse" tactics to successfully kill Takeda Daizen Daifu, the former governor of Takeda and the former supreme commander.

However, the counterattack of the Takeda clan governor Yoshinobu Takeda caused heavy losses to the Rose Knights United

The arrival of the Tsume-Mt. Rangers also made the retreat of the Uesugi army extremely difficult.

At 15 o'clock in the afternoon of the same day, the Uesugi army crossed the Xichuan River, and the Takeda army also stopped the pursuit and began to return to Kaijin Castle.

That night, the Uesugi army and the Takeda family held a celebration banquet at Zenko-ji Temple and Kaitsu Castle respectively to commend the meritorious soldiers.

In the history of Japan's Warring States period, the four battles of Kawanakajima that broke out between the Nagao-Uesugi family and the Takeda family came to an end.

Regarding the course and outcome of this battle, there are contradictory and mixed accounts of various families.

The "Annals of the Uesugi Family" and "The Records of the Echigo Army" that record Uesugi Fang's claim that the Uesugi family won, and the "Koyo Gunkankan" and "Yamamoto Susuke Diary" (Yamamoto Kansuke's adopted son) that record Takeda Fang's "Koyo Military Records" and "Yamamoto Kansuke's Adopted Son" claim that victory belongs to the Takeda family, of course, there are also some more neutral materials, such as "Ko-Etsu Army Records" and "Shinshu War Records".

In the above historical materials, more than half of them record that "before the retreat of the Uesugi army, Huihu saw that there was no hope of victory, so he personally led dozens of elite knights to break into the main formation of the Takeda army."

At the same time, historical materials such as Takeda Fang's "Jiayang Military Jian" and "Jiayue Military Discipline" and "Shinshu Battle Record" also recorded a battle between Uesugi Terutora and Takeda Harunobu, the supreme commander of the two armies:

"Legend has it that at the time of the fierce battle, there was a white-robed general, breaking through the Takeda military formation and taking Takeda Harunobu in the formation, slashing three times in a row, the first knife was slapped by the Harumin army, the second knife The general had cut Harumin's shoulder, and the third knife cut off Harunobu's neck and took Harunobu's life. At this time, the Takeda army in the rear swarmed in, and the military general had no time to cut off Harumin's head, so he had to leave, which was the only one-on-one confrontation between Huihu and Harunobu in the legend. ”

"It is rumored that at the last moment, Uesugi Terutora led the Uesugi family's most elite Rose Knights Wing to break into the Takeda Army's central army formation, and Terutora used the famous sword Shodou Nagamitsu to cut Takeda Harunobu's iron Shiru military fan in half with one sword, and the second slash was slashed on Harunobu's shoulder, causing him to be seriously injured. But Huihu didn't have time to take Harunobu's life, and the Chibi knights led by Takeda Nobuyoshi and Naito Masatoyo roared in the rear, and Huihu had to leave with hatred. Although Uesugi Terutora was unable to win over Takeda Harunobu in the battle, Harunobu was unable to set off due to his injuries after retreating to Kaizu Castle, and when the army withdrew to Katsuo Castle, Harunobu died of his injuries and died of illness. ”

――Uttering "Jiayang Military Jian"

What is doubly puzzling is that the records of the Shinshu War Records and the Koyo Gunkan are contradictory, one says that he was slashed three times, and the other says that he was stabbed twice, and the "War Records" records that Takeda Harunobu was killed by Uesugi Terumora, while the "Gunkan" believes that Harunobu died of illness while retreating to Kitashinano Katsuwei Castle.

Did Harunobu Takeda die in battle or die of illness?

Did Uesugi Terutora slash three or two?

Later generations were puzzled by this matter, but at least one of them was a definite fact, that is, Uesugi Terutora led elite knights to break into the Takeda army's main camp and fought with Takeda Harunobu.

Curiously, the Echigo Gunki, which is more inclined to Uesugi in terms of stance, is silent on this matter, while the more credible Uesugi Family Annals is sparse and only records the general course of the battle of Kawanakajima, and does not mention any details of the battlefield.

Kansuke Yamamoto, Torada Mokaku, Nobuyoshi Takeda, Masashi Iitomi, Nobuyo Anayama, Kakizaki Keike, Shinbata Tsunasa and others who died in this battle are also recorded in the military records of each family:

"Yamamoto Kansuke Haruki is fortunate to enter the road of Onisai, today's tactics have been discovered, our generals have each met the enemy and were killed, and we are waiting for the return of the ancestors of Saijo Mountain (Mt. Tsuma-to-me), and we have learned from the pain, and decided to ride deep into the enemy formation, and there are enemy troops in front and back, left and right, and can help kill seven cavalry in the area, kill thirteen enemy cavalry, and finally be killed by the enemy."

――Uttering "The Tale of the Three Generations of Takeda"

Seeing that Takeda Yoshinobu's defensive team was unstable, Uesugi Terutora ordered his generals to attack Yoshinobu's team first, and then retreated. The veteran Zhujiao Fenghou Shouhu was eager to save the young master, and led the army out of the position to cover Yoshinobu's retreat, and Huding broke through a corner of the Uesugi army's encirclement network, so that Yoshinobu was able to fight out of the encirclement and retreat to the position. ”

――Uttering "The Tale of the Echigo Army"

"The veteran Zhujiao Fenghou defended the tiger ding, led his own troops to break into the Uesugi army formation, the Honjo, Shinbata, and Sebe troops in the Uesugi army immediately met the Takeda army, after a few assaults, the Zhujiao army was scattered, wearing a vermilion lacquer bucket with feet, wearing a flame hood Zhujiao Huding, holding a big gun and rushing into the Uesugi army position, its brave momentum, so that the warlike Echigo army reminded of the ghost god Asura, and died heroically after taking the first twenty-three."

――Utterance of "Shinshu War Record"

It can be seen from this that there are also two completely different theories about the death of Zhujiao Huding.

It is recorded in the "Military Records" that the Tiger must have been surrounded by the Uesugi army in order to rescue Takeda Yoshinobu who had fallen into a siege due to recklessness, but the "War Record" mentions that the time of the Jacked Tiger has nothing to do with Takeda Yoshinobu, and "led his own troops to break into the Uesugi army", and there is no explanation for why the Tigers of the Horns attacked and why they penetrated deep into the Uesugi army.

Some people believe that these two records of the "Military Records" and the "War Records" can corroborate each other and complement each other, but some researchers believe that the "Military Records" and the "War Records" have many contradictions, so it is wrong to supplement the two with each other.

In the first half of the 21st century, some people believe that Takeda Kansuke broke into the Uesugi army to rescue Yoshinobu and that the raid was for another purpose and had nothing to do with Takeda Yoshinobu.

However, as soon as this statement came out, it was ridiculed and criticized by everyone, and it was considered to be "too rich in imagination", "the head is full of vinegar kelp", and "the brain hole breaks through the sky".

It was not until decades later, in the second half of the 21st century, that the "Diary of Keiji Maeda" unearthed in Tsushima Island seriously contradicted the above-mentioned historical materials.

Since then, the Diary of Keiji Maeda has become an important material for the study of Hokuriku Sasa-Genji and the Hokuriku Maeda family.

Among them, it is also recorded that Maeda Keiji was captured in the Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima:

"Tease to the left! I've been killed by you! Before you set off from Kasuga Mountain Castle, you are still lewd. Laughing and saying to me what nonsense such as 'I raise your wife, don't worry about it', it's really a crow's mouth! Now Lao Tzu has been captured! I'm about to go to Kai Hesitant Pavilion, and when I get home, I find that Ah Song is missing a hair or something, and you're going to die! Don't hit Ah Song's idea, you bulldozer! ”
