Chapter 4 The first hero to break the city
The sound of gunfire continued, but it had become much sparser, and the fire inside and outside the city was soaring, and there was a scene of the end of the world in Anqing City.
Late at night on November 19, 1908, after a fierce battle in the middle of the night, with the assistance of the rebels in the city, more than 3,000 people from the 31st Mixed Association Uprising Force of the Anhui New Army stationed outside the city and the Huidang armed forces who came to the aid finally attacked Anqing City, occupied the fire depot in the city, set up artillery to bombard the old military barracks, repelled all the Qing troops defending the city several times their own, drove them out of the city, and successfully joined forces with the rebel troops in the city at the governor's yamen.
With the sky-high fire, in the sound of the revolutionary army's artillery, Anqing City announced its recovery!
History has been rewritten at this moment!
While Xiong Chengji, the commander-in-chief of the uprising, was discussing the battle plan for pursuing the Qing army with his staff officers, Zhao Bei, the acting commander of the 62nd standard of the rebel army, led his subordinates and was busy picking up rifles and bullets on the streets.
These guns and bullets were discarded by the defeated soldiers of the patrol team when they fled, and the whole box was thrown all over the streets along several main roads in the city, which aroused the covetousness of some green-skinned wanderers, and when the guns in the city were scarce, these people poured out of their nests and tried to coax the guns and bullets, and some of them immediately exposed their inferior nature after getting the weapons, and robbed the shops one by one along the street, and if the shopkeeper resisted a little, he was immediately shot down, and what was even more infuriating was that these people fished in the waters, and even called themselves "rebel fighters", which seriously ruined the reputation of the rebel armyand caused panic among the people in the city.
For these scoundrels who usurped the fruits of the revolution, Zhao Beitie was ruthless, and sent his subordinates to search and attack along several main streets in sheds and platoons.
After two hours of ammunition pressure, Zhao Bei's troops had killed more than 200 armed scoundrels, collected more than 500 guns, hundreds of thousands of bullets, and two cannons, and worked closely with the rebel troops outside the city to successfully put an end to the anarchy in the city.
When Wu Zhenhan found Zhao Bei with the letter of appointment in his hand, the time-traveler who had just come to this era was already tired, but his gunsmoke-blackened face was like a soldier with a smile.
"Oh? Appoint me as a left-wing winger? Zhao Bei took the letter of appointment and was quite surprised. When directing the uprising, he didn't think much about getting promoted and making a fortune, not to mention that Xiong Chengji was not the only one who led the uprising, but there were no less than five or six "liaisons" and "athletes" from the Kuomintang alone.
"Not because of your bomb?" Wu Zhenhan smiled. "Before you threw the bomb, the rebels had been lurking outside the city for half a quarter of an hour, and seeing that there should be no gate inside, Commander Xiong was anxious and was hesitating whether to order a strong attack, but the city gate was blown up to the sky, and the morale of our army was suddenly boosted. Commander Xiong said it himself, this is called 'one bullet to make the difference'! If it weren't for the bomb you dropped, I wouldn't have been able to enter the city. β
As soon as he thought of the "mobile phone bomb" that almost blew himself up, Zhao Bei was a little afraid, and immediately restrained the smile on the corner of his mouth, looked at the letter of appointment again, and asked, "You told Commander Xiong about my bomb?" Others have no opinion on this appointment? β
"I told Commander Xiong and a group of officials about this matter in the Huoyao Library, and they all said that this was God's blessing, if it weren't for that, I was afraid that this incident would be a failure. Therefore, as soon as Commander Xiong mentioned the appointment, the others had nothing to say, after all, you were the first hero to break the city, and only a few leaders of the Hui Party were not convinced, they said that you killed their subordinates, and there was no way to command the righteous army. Wu Zhenhan said.
"Oh? There are really people in those robbing scoundrels! Zhao Bei shook his head slightly, just now he heard a report from his subordinates, saying that a few scoundrels who robbed shops refused to disarm after being caught, claiming to be the "righteous army" of the party outside the city, the soldiers naturally would not be polite, a row of guns passed, and immediately lay down, now it seems that those people may really be armed with the party who entered the city with the troops outside the city.
"Not only that, but those members of the party also said that your origin is unknown, and asked Commander Xiong to investigate carefully. But Commander Xiong waved his hand and said, "Since it is anti-Qing, it is a comrade, and there is no doubt in employing people, and there is no need to suspect people!" What's more, if you hadn't led your troops to kill and cut off the electric pole, how could the Qing army in the city collapse in a blink of an eye? As a result, those people have nothing to say. Now the rebels have made up three roads: left, middle and right, Commander Xiong is the middle wing commander, Duan Zhixuan is the right wing commander, and our sixty-two standards are arranged as the left wing, and you are the wing commander. β
"Commander Xiong's trust in Zhao, Zhao has nothing to repay, only to fight bravely, recover the province as soon as possible, and enter the Central Plains!" Zhao Bei put away the letter of appointment and made the appearance of a soldier dying as a confidant, moved by the frankness of these young revolutionaries, and at the same time regretted their political naivety.
In the "Xinhai Revolution", there was still no shortage of political naivety among the young revolutionaries, some of them participated in the revolution with the idea of "retiring after success", and immediately retired as soon as the revolution was completed, while others used their own blood and even their lives to pave the way for those late Qing politicians who were bent on drilling camps, and also laid an ambush for the warlord melee in the future.
Of course, not all revolutionaries are simply naΓ―ve, and some of them take advantage of the general trend of the revolution to successfully push themselves to high positions, and then they also throw themselves into the warlord melee, but at that time, they were no longer revolutionaries.
In this era of China, the soil was more suitable for nourishing warlords than for pure revolutionaries.
"Now that I've traveled back in time to this era, let me change all that." Zhao Beixin said.
Taking the horse lantern from the soldier's hand, Zhao Bei led Wu Zhenhan into a silk shop that had been looted, pointed to the room full of guns and ammunition, and said: "If we expand the army immediately, relying on these picked up guns and ammunition, we can at least expand the number of people by a few hundred more, and we have also picked up two cannons, although they are old cannons, they are still complete, and there are two or three hundred shells." β
"Commander Xiong means, let's expand the army to 20,000 before dawn. A total of more than 20,000 guns of all kinds were counted in the Huoyao storehouse, and the ordnance was enough, but there were not enough people, plus the party that entered the city one after another, and we only had more than 5,000 people at the moment. Wu Zhenhan frowned.
"The party is unreliable, and the green-skinned wanderers in the city are even more unreliable. Soldiers are expensive, not much. Although Anqing has been conquered now, the enemy is outnumbered, and Anqing is close to the Yangtze River, and it is convenient for gunboats to come and go on the river. In my opinion, the best strategy for us now is not to hold on to the city, but to withdraw from the city with arms and ammunition! Directly attack the defense of the empty northern Anhui, or move to the west, where the mountains are dense and the people are strong, where we may be able to create a situation, where the people are suffering, we will go. Zhao Bei said.
"To drill a ravine? I'm afraid it's not appropriate. Commander Xiong meant that the 20,000 people would be divided into three ways. After annihilating the defeated Qing army outside the city, our army attacked Jixian Pass all the way north, cut off the return route of the new army in the ninth town of Jiangsu, instigated their uprising, and covered the troops attacking Jiangning on the other road, while Commander Xiong himself sat in the city and planned the overall situation. In this way, I am afraid that 20,000 people will not be enough. β
"Of course it's not enough! Although the ninth town of the Jiangsu New Army is now participating in the autumn exercise in Taihu Lake, it does not mean that Jiangning City's air defense is weak, don't forget, in addition to the new army in Jiangning City, there are also patrol battalions, and in Pukou, there are more than 10,000 Jiangfang troops of the pseudo-Qing Dynasty, these troops are unable to move, they are a stone's throw away from Jiangning, and they will be the great enemy of our army. Zhao Bei felt that it was not good, now there are few soldiers in the city, and he may not even be able to defend the city, and he actually wants to divide his troops to attack Nanjing.
The historical "Anqing Horse Artillery Battalion Uprising" was not successful, so the planned plan to attack Nanjing was not implemented, but now the situation has changed, due to the intervention of Zhao Bei, the uprising was at least partially successful, history has changed, if the uprising command at this time adheres to the plan of attacking Nanjing, then, even if there is no historical experience to sum up, Zhao Bei can also foresee the inevitable failure.
The problem was not only the encirclement and suppression of the Qing troops along the way, but also the lack of ships for the rebel army. Anqing is close to the Yangtze River, located in the upper reaches of Nanjing, hundreds of miles apart, the best way to transport troops is by ship, if you walk on foot, it will take at least five or six days to reach the city of Nanjing, and by that time, I am afraid that the city of Nanjing is already heavily guarded, and there is no way to attack, after all, there is a new thing in this era, called "wireless telegraphy", every move of the rebel army will be summarized by the Qing army along the way, and it is definitely not difficult to judge the direction of the main attack.
Anqing is located on the north bank of the Yangtze River, it is an important commercial port in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and it is also a strategic place to control the Yangtze River waterway. After the end of the war, Anqing was deserted for hundreds of miles, but later with the gathering of foreign population, the city gradually recovered a trace of vitality, relying on the diligence of the Chinese and convenient transportation conditions, once again became a lively commercial port under the Yangtze River with tourists and merchants. Originally, there were many large and small ships moored along the coast, which were the most suitable for transporting soldiers, but because the patrol battalions in the city were repulsed, they all went out of the city through the south gate, they robbed all the boats along the river, and those that could not be taken were burned, and the flames burning along the river reflected half of the sky, and they have not been extinguished until now, so it is impossible for the rebels to move by boats.
When he learned that the boats along the river had been burned out, Zhao Bei knew that the plan to attack Nanjing could no longer be implemented, and it was even more inappropriate to trap the isolated city. In Zhao Bei's view, the timing of the uprising chosen by the Kuomintang was very inappropriate, and compared with the "Xinhai Revolution" that was supposed to break out three years later, the Anqing uprising had three congenital shortcomings:
First of all, on the eve of the outbreak of the Xinhai Revolution, due to the poor agricultural harvest and the consequent soaring grain prices, many popular uprisings broke out in Hunan, Hubei, Anhui and other places, in which the Kuomintang and the Hui Party were involved, and some units of the new army were sent by the Qing court to suppress the popular uprising. And this is one of the innate conditions that the Anqing Uprising does not have, although it is not smooth now, but whether it is a soldier or a common people, they have not been forced to a dead end by the imperial court, as long as there is something to eat, few people will rebel with their heads, and they want the world to respond to all the calls, and the people look at the wind and shadows, it seems that some strongmen are difficult.
Secondly, the reason why the Xinhai Revolution was launched by the new army and received the response of most of the Qing army was half because of the instigation of the Kuomintang Party, and the other half was because of the reduction of military salaries and unreasonable arrears. Therefore, the Xinhai Revolution was not so much a revolutionary uprising as a mutiny provoked by a ramp-up, at least in the early stages. This is exactly what the Anqing Uprising lacked, at least in Anqing City, the distribution of military salaries is still sufficient, which can be corroborated by the number of troops who participated in the uprising, the total number of officers and men of the 31st Mixed Association is more than 4,400, and only about 2,000 people took the initiative to participate in the revolution, and the old army headed by the patrol battalion has hardly formed a system and turned to the revolution, at least in the eyes of the soldiers of the old army, the imperial court has not yet reached the time of "anger and resentment".
In the end, the reason why the Xinhai Revolution quickly evolved from a mutiny to a full-scale revolution that spread to all provinces after its outbreak was entirely because the "constitutionalists", who had high hopes for the imperial court, turned their guns. For various purposes, many feudal officials were also sympathizers and supporters of the constitutionalists, so when the Qing court's funny "imperial cabinet" was established, the constitutionalists were completely dead, and began to obtain some tacit understanding with the revolutionaries, and when they found that the court was weak, they decisively participated in the "revolution". This is the biggest congenital deficiency of the Anqing Uprising, without the response of the provinces, relying on the power of a single province, it is difficult to shake the foundation of the Qing Dynasty's rule, "there is no revolution in the era of post-loading guns", there is no division and disintegration within the ruling group, it is difficult for the revolution to succeed, the current "constitutionalists" are waiting for the imperial court to give alms to the next "Constituent Assembly", at least for the time being, they do not support the revolution, because revolution means war, means the collapse of the old order, and means the redivision of the interest cake, It's not what they want to see.
The so-called "times create heroes", moving with the times, can get twice the result with half the effort.
To sum it up in a textbook sentence, the current social situation is that "the time for revolution is not yet fully ripe."
As a traverser, Zhao Bei is convinced of this conclusion, and he does not intend to forcibly confront the "general trend", at least not now. Revolution is never an accidental impulse, and success requires long-term planning, careful preparation, and preparation for repeated defeats.
"Let's go, let's go visit Commander Xiong. I have a suggestion that I would like to share with him. β
Zhao Bei summoned his subordinates to form a team, left some people to guard the ordnance, and then drove with Wu Zhenhan and his troops to the governor's yamen.
