Chapter 246: There are many rights and wrongs in the literary world
Lin Zixuan was ready to put into practice the plan that had been simulated many times, and the first thing he did was to remediate English.
As a scumbag who hated English in later generations and barely passed even Level 4, learning English is a very painful thing, which is a kind of resistance and disgust that goes deep into the bones.
Why do Chinese schools use English as a subject for further studies and graduation assessments? English is not the native language of Chinese.
Will foreigners use Chinese as a subject for further studies and graduation assessments?
It's a question he's been figuring out.
Fortunately, after the crossing, he has a certain foundation in English, has the experience of studying in the United States, and has no problem with listening and general communication, and the next step is to seriously review the knowledge he has learned before.
This was something he was extremely resistant to, so he used to prefer someone to translate the novel rather than learn English on his own.
Now he's learning English to change the world, and that reason sounds a little bit lofty.
Lin Zixuan asked people to buy a typewriter from a foreign bank, and purchased paper and ink.
He did not come forward to deal with these things, but went to the purchasing staff of his publishing house to handle them, for the reason that he had already thought about it, and it happened that he was going to promote the new literature series to the Western society, and these books were also in English.
He had already received the manuscripts of Yu Dafu and Pearl Sai, and only Lin Yutang's manuscripts were sent in November.
Lu Xun's "The Scream" novel collection is quite difficult to translate.
How to make Westerners understand the living customs and conditions of rural China, and how to make Westerners see the critical nature of it, is a difficult problem. If translated literally, Westerners may think that this is the norm in Chinese life.
They read novels with a curious mentality. And I can't see the deep sadness and criticism of the author.
The essence of Lu Xun's novel lies in the eight words "mourn its misfortune and be angry with it".
So. The translation should not be so concise, but should introduce the general environment of China's rural areas, so that Western readers can understand the background of the times, and most Westerners do not know the actual situation in China at all.
Lin Zixuan will write a preface or guide to each collection of novels.
The content and ideas expressed in this collection of novels are equivalent to a literary review, allowing Western readers to understand the background and profound connotations of the times.
Naturally, these literary criticisms were not written by him, but were based on later research articles on Lu Xun and Yu Dafu.
It can be said that it is quite profound and insightful.
Yu Dafu read it and wrote to Lin Zixuan, thinking that Lin Zixuan was the one who really understood his novels.
Lu Xun wrote back that it was too much praise. He couldn't afford it.
He recognized the literary criticism written by Lin Zixuan, especially Lin Zixuan's evaluation of his novels with "mourning his misfortune and being angry with him", and he felt even more ashamed.
These eight words are the words that Lu Xun once commented on the English poet Byron.
In February and March 1908, Lu Xun wrote an article under the pseudonym of Ling Fei, entitled "Moro Poetic Theory", which was published in the second and third issues of Henan magazine.
Henan Monthly was an anti-Qing patriotic revolutionary journal founded by Japanese students in China in the winter of 1907.
In his dissertation, he wrote: "Emphasizing independence and loving freedom, and standing before the slave, he will be sad and look at it, sad because of his misfortune, and angry because of his eyes......"
This is what Lu Xun said about Byron's attitude towards his unconscious Englishmen.
Lin Zixuan can write this sentence. It shows that I have read Lu Xun's previous articles, and this sentence does show Lu Xun's attitude towards the Chinese people.
He felt that Lin Zixuan was at least very insightful in literary appreciation, but it was a pity that he did not follow the right path.
During this period, Lu Xun was for the Crescent faction. In particular, Xu Zhimo was quite dissatisfied.
He even wrote a limerick poem "My Broken Love" to satirize the prevalence of boring lovelorn poems, the main reason is Xu Zhimo's pursuit of Lin Huiyin, not to mention that he hasn't caught up yet.
This incident became a fuse. It implicates the contradiction between the later Silk School and the Modern Critics.
Lu Xun wrote "My Broken Love", which was ready to be published in the supplement of "Morning Post". Sun Fuyuan, as a loyal fan of Lu Xun, is also the editor-in-chief of the supplement of "Morning Post". Upon receipt of this work, it was typeset immediately.
But on the first night of the newspaper, Sun Fuyuan went to the newspaper to look at the sample and found that the work had been taken down by the editor-in-chief Liu Mianji.
Liu Mianji is Xu Zhimo's fellow villager and friend, and he knows the relationship between Xu Zhimo and Lin Huiyin, so he is particularly sensitive and taboo to the poem "My Broken Love", so he is not going to publish it.
Sun Fuyuan felt sorry for Lu Xun, couldn't hold back his anger, and slapped Liu Mianji with his hand, and immediately resigned.
On October 31, 1924, Sun Fuyuan resigned and left the supplement of the Morning Post.
In order to have a propaganda position for publishing articles, in November, Lu Xun, Zhou Zuoren, Lin Yutang, Sun Fuyuan and others founded the magazine "Yuxi", which was the first literary journal in the history of modern literature to focus on prose.
Interestingly, Xu Zhimo didn't know the inside story.
He saw that a friend in the literary world had started a new magazine, and he also took the initiative to send a translation of the poem "Dead Body" by the French poet Baudelaire, which was published in the third issue of "The Silk of Words".
In the fifth issue of "Yuxi", Lu Xun wrote the essay "Music" to satirize Xu Zhimo again.
Later, he explained in the Preface to the Extra-Collection: "I don't really like to make new poems...... I don't like Xu Zhimo's poems even more, and he prefers to submit articles everywhere, as soon as "Yuxi" is published, he will come, someone approves of him, and when he publishes, I made a miscellaneous article and made a joke with him, so that he couldn't come, and he really didn't come......"
Xu Zhimo understood the cause and effect, so he naturally would not submit it to "Yuxi" again.
The petty contradictions between these literati accumulate day by day, and once there is a controversial topic, a big controversy will erupt.
Lin Zixuan asked the staff of the publishing house to typeset and print these English novels, and he supervised and studied on the side, preparing for his own independent production of "The Man in the High Castle" in the future.
The paper and ink he asked people to procure were from Europe and the United States, as well as from Japan, and they were mixed together and were not easy to find.
Moreover, as a bookstore, it is too normal to buy these printing items, and the only thing that is abnormal is that Lin Zixuan is supervising on the side, which makes the employees of the bookstore tremble.
They didn't know what the boss was nervous about, so they just stood by and watched, putting a lot of pressure on their work.
Even Ping Banya didn't understand, and deliberately ran over to take a look, thinking that there was something new.
Lin Zixuan explained that this is because of the importance attached to this batch of books, after all, they have to be mailed to foreign countries, and there can be no mistakes.
Ping Banya was quite speechless, this is not a regular publication, just print out a few sample books and mail them out, there is no need to pay so much attention to it, and you have to supervise it personally.
But the boss spoke, and he couldn't say anything, just watch it if you like, I won't accompany you.
This set of new literature series, Lin Zixuan focuses on publishing in the United States, and he will not let go of the United Kingdom.
He is ready to promote it in English-speaking countries, but he has done it anyway, so it is better to do his best and expand the influence of Chinese new literature in the world as much as possible. (To be continued.) )
