Chapter 112: Flying Cigars

Dr. IonGrosu looked at the expressions of the crowd and knew that this aircraft was indeed a little weird, but this was the only way they could think of, if they used the conventional design, they simply could not surpass their competitors in this business transport aircraft scheme, and even then the economy of this aircraft was relatively poor, although the use of tandem twin engines reduced the aerodynamic drag caused by the two-wing layout, but the weight of the structure was also greatly increased.

Manecozi also did not expect that the IAR company's transport aircraft scheme would be like this, this kind of design is completely beyond everyone's imagination, although it can be seen that this design does not have much advantage, but Manecozi can not help but be proud of the whimsy of his own aircraft designers, so he took the lead in applauding vigorously, and the rest of the audience in the audience could not help but be attracted by this wonderful design, and applauded.

Manekozi waited for the applause to subside before he exclaimed, "Dr. IonGrosu, your design is fantastic!" This wonderful design has simply created a new school of design, although from the data point of view your plan does not have much advantage, but your bold and innovative ideas are very worthy of encouragement, our own aviation industry needs to have this innovative spirit, in order to catch up with the international advanced level in the fierce competition. Okay, you go on. ”

Dr. IonGrosu nodded, "Thank you for the compliment, Your Excellency, we are all ashamed. Okay, let me talk about the cabin design of this business transport aircraft, it reaches a height of 1.9 meters, a width of 1.8 meters, and a length of 5.5 meters, so the space is still very large. The design ceiling of our commercial transport aircraft is 5,000 meters, so when the flight altitude exceeds 4,000 meters, each passenger must be equipped with oxygen supply equipment, but we also considered when designing, under normal circumstances, the flight altitude cannot exceed 4,000 meters. Therefore, only when the route has special requirements, we can add oxygen supply masks. Of course, the best feature of our transport plane is that it can take off and land on very simple airports, even on a flat lawn. ”

With that, Dr. IonGrosu turned around again and flipped out the design of the trainer that was hidden behind him. When this picture appeared, Philip exclaimed, "Oh my God, isn't this the later yellow-headed cigar?" Why did you show up here in advance? If this plane does fly, isn't it just a flying cigar?

True, the appearance of this trainer aircraft is very similar to the IAR.80 fighter designed and produced by the IAR later! While losing two bids in quick succession to Poland's state-owned aviation industry company, the design team, led by Dr. IonGrosu, has been working on new fighter designs. He was convinced that the lower wing design pioneered by IAR.24 was far superior to the PZL Seagull Wing, known as the "Polish Wing". The design team fully studied the characteristics of the PZL fighter and incorporated its advantages into the design of the new fighter, as a result of which the IAR.80 was created.

The IAR.80 is a cantilever lower monoplane fighter with a conventional control wing layout. The front fuselage has a circular cross-section, which gradually transitions from the rear of the cockpit to an oval shape and is combined with the spine part, and the canopy is a short blister type with a bulge in the middle and a gradual fusion of the rear part with the fuselage, and the layout is very similar to that of the F4U "Corsair". The cockpit is very rear, about 1/2 of the back of the fuselage. The forward-arranging wings are roughly trapezoidal, with the trailing edge slightly tilted forward, and its slender flaps extend from the fuselage to 1/3 of the wingspan, and continue outwards to the round wingtips of the ailerons. Such a design undoubtedly ensures that the aircraft has good maneuverability. The main landing gear can be stowed into the belly, and the rear landing gear has a fixed tail skid.

The design of the IAR.80 absorbed many of the features of the PZL aircraft. The design of the rear fuselage of the semi-monocoque structure is directly derived from the P.24, and the design of the front part of the fuselage, including the engine and its bracket and fairing, is also based on the P.24. The fuselage from the engine to the cockpit was completely redesigned, including a frame made of welded steel tubes and duralumin skin. The cockpit interior instruments, sights and other equipment are almost entirely imported. This overall design was far more advanced than that of the Poles, and the IAR finally gave it the trump card to beat the PZL. This aircraft became a glorious figure in the history of the Romanian aviation industry. Later, part of the IAR.80 was converted into a trainer aircraft.

Now, Dr. IonGrosu shows the trainer aircraft, which is very close to the cigar shape of the IAR.80 fighter jet in appearance, and the entire fuselage of the aircraft looks like a stout cigar. Of course, in terms of dimensions, this trainer is much smaller than the IAR.80 fighter, and in addition there are a lot of details that are not the same.

Dr. IonGrosu stood in front of the podium and said confidently, "This is the junior trainer designed by our company, which uses a semi-monocoque all-metal fuselage, and the whole aircraft presents a streamlined shape, not only with low aerodynamic drag, but also with a very beautiful shape." It is a single-engine, lower-wing, rear three-point landing gear, tandem cockpit trainer. The aircraft uses a German BMW piston engine, with a power of 280 horsepower, a four-blade torque conversion propeller produced by Dragon Soul Aircraft Manufacturing Company, with a length of 8.3 meters, a wingspan of 10.5 meters, a height of 3.4 meters, an empty weight of 1250 kg, a maximum take-off weight of 1650 kg, a wing area of 15.5 square meters, a 12.7 mm machine gun can be installed, and 50 kg bombs can be mounted. The designed maximum level flight speed is 260 kilometers per hour, the endurance time is 3.5 hours, the range is 600 kilometers, and the ceiling is 5000 meters. ”

The design of this trainer is quite decent, and there is nothing too unusual. Therefore, the people in the room did not talk as before, but just quietly watched Dr. IonGrosu explain. However, judging from the performance parameters of this training aircraft, it is still worse than the training aircraft program of the Dragon Soul Ordnance Complex. Not only is it lower in terms of speed and range, but its rear three-point landing gear does not seem to be as good as the front three-point landing gear in the Dragon Soul Ordnance Complex scheme. But after all, this is a plan made by their own people, so many people in the Royal Romanian Air Force are still very proud.

Dr. IonGrosu bowed to the crowd and strode off the podium.

All three companies have now presented their plans and their master designs have been submitted to the judging committee, but according to RAF Commander Manekozi at the beginning of the bidding meeting, it will take a month of detailed evaluation before the results will be determined.
