Volume 1: Shadow Rise Chapter 18: The Return

Ground floor, central coroner's room, BPRD headquarters.

For Edward Locke, it was the usual night shift. As usual, he turned on the lights in the autopsy room and began to examine and count the corpses.

The corpse in front of him had been sent two weeks earlier, and due to various delays, it was only now that Edward had removed the almost forgotten corpse from the refrigerated corpse locker.

The autopsy job has always been very boring, especially for Edward, who has to deal with corpses every day, and the job is simply boring and drives him crazy.

"What is your name first?" muttered Edward, reaching for the corpse's neck to find the name tag. Because the corpse had been frozen for too long, the cold and hard feeling made him get goosebumps even with rubber gloves, and when he finally touched the metallic texture, Edward immediately pulled his hand and took off the name tag.

"Kane Maiter? So you're Kane Mait. Edward was intrigued by the name on the metal nameplate, and although he was just an ordinary medical officer, the most unpopular coroner of all medical personnel, he had heard of all the things that were happening at headquarters.

He had long heard about the annihilation of the Shoal Robert-led forces in France, and one of his friends happened to be the Commander-in-Chief's affairs officer, so the last time he was chatting in his office, Edward's friend joked about the report submitted by Shore, saying that the person who wrote it must have gone mad. Although Edward did not read the report closely, he remembered several names, including Kane Maiter's.

Edward placed the name tag in a sealed plastic bag, and then selected a handy No. 2 scalpel on the instrument table to begin the dissection. Remembering that the report seemed to say that he had been strangled by a demon, Edward struggled to retrieve useful information from his mind, as it would reduce his workload and perhaps have time for a drink after work.

Let's cut open the throat first. Edward thought that the dead would not complain anyway, and this was the only thing that made him find the corpse cute.

He skillfully swung his knife and made a beautiful curved incision in the corpse's throat, and then used a medical searchlight to perform a cursory examination of the apparatus. "Is the bone meal in the neck shattered, but also accompanied by severe internal bleeding, it is a terrible injury. Edward said to himself as he examined.

"It seems that a more thorough examination is needed, and the right arm is completely missing, and it will take a long time. Edward frowned and looked unhappy, it seems that he can't drink alcohol tonight, and I'm afraid it's already morning after a set of checks.

But work is work, and no matter how unhappy it is, you have to do it. Edward yawned and stretched to the next room to find a depth instrument.

After a few minutes, he returned to the central infirmary with a cart carrying equipment, but as soon as he entered, he almost fell in horror with the sight in front of him.

Kane Mait, who had been lying on the bed of corpses, was now sitting on the edge of the bed staring at him with a pair of frosty eyes, Edward had been in the autopsy industry for more than ten years, and although he had heard all kinds of weird stories, he had always laughed at them as after-dinner jokes. Now that the horror story is alive and well in front of his eyes, Edward feels like he's about to pee his pants.

"You, come here. The dead man's hoarse sound from the hole in his throat was like the wind whistling, making Edward feel that every cold hair of his body stood on end.

"I called you over, didn't you hear?" the hollow voice sounded again. Edward finally believed that everything that was happening in front of him was not a dream, and he took a few steps forward with a trembling voice, asking in an almost trembling voice, "Is there anything I need to do?"

The deceased's voice was not emotional: "You're a doctor, right, sew my throat again." ”

Sew it again!?Edward's mind was full of strange thoughts at the moment, it wasn't because of his disrespect to the dead that they came to him for trouble, God, O Virgin, if I could be spared retribution, I swore that I would take good care of these dead people in the future, and I would never have any desecration against them.

"Why don't you want to do it?" asked the deceased in a displeased tone.

"No, no, no, no, no. Edward felt his tongue get knotted. "No, it's not like that, I'll sew it for you now. ”

"Then hurry up, I'm still in a hurry. ”

Edward, completely oblivious to the strangeness of the dead man in front of him, took out the medical needle and thread and scissors from the instrument table, and just like that, sweating his hands, stitched the incision in Kane Mait's throat.

He had never felt that the work of stitching up the wound was so long, and the sweat in his palms almost made it impossible for him to hold the needle, so much so that he almost lost the money for the needle several times.

Edward didn't know how much time had passed, all he knew was that when he had finished the last stitches and cut the threads, he felt a feeling of relief that he had never felt before, a feeling that came from nowhere and almost made him untenable.

"You're very good at sewing. Kane said as he touched the stitched wound, and then he got up from the bed and felt the sensation in his body as he woke up. He tried his best to get every muscle and bone back in place, because he had been frozen for too long, and every time he moved, there was a "click" sound of bones resetting.

"Looks like you're almost recovering. Kane stopped in satisfaction, and he turned to Edward, who was already frightened, and asked, "Guy over there, do you know where Shore Robert went?"

"This, this," Edward stammered. "I've only heard that he's leading the newly formed X-Team to St. Peter's Basilica, I'm just an ordinary doctor, and I don't know the details. ”

"That's right. Kane said in a slightly disappointed tone, "I was expecting more from you, but it seems that you are a useless fellow!"

It's useless, it's useless, Edward shouted in his heart, I just hope you get back to Hades quickly, don't appear in front of me anyway, I'd rather quit drinking in the future than never see you again.

"I, can I go?" Edward asked in a humble tone, though he thought to himself, "since I'm useless, I should be able to leave, right?"

Kane nodded: "That's right, useless people should leave, you can leave now." ”

Finally getting rid of my nightmares for the night, Edward felt like he was about to cry. He hurriedly turned to leave, but Kane gently raised his left hand and whispered, "The time of judgment has come, the Holy Word is destroyed." ”

As soon as his words fell, Edward, who had just unscrewed the doorknob, was shocked and froze in place. He looked back at Kane in disbelief and asked, "Why? Didn't you say you were going to let me go?"

Kane replied with a nonchalant look on his face, "I said he should leave if he didn't work, but I didn't say where I was going to send him." He paused. "Besides, I think it's better to shut you up, after all, only dead people can't speak. ”

"Why lieβ€”" Before Edward could finish his words, his body began to drift away like smoke and dust from the hand holding the doorknob, and in just a few seconds Edward Lodge turned into dust and completely disappeared from the world, leaving only the white medical uniform remaining on the ground.

"It seems that Mephistopheles did not lie to me, and indeed made me complete the awakening of the Word. Kane put away the words in his left hand, his eyes full of joy and impatience. "Well, it's time to meet my old friend, Shore, I'm looking forward to having a good fight with you when I get stronger, and I wonder if you can let me have a good time now. ”
