Chapter 63: The Battle of Shanggao to Encircle and Annihilate the Enemy (1)

On March 15, 1941, the commander of the 11th Army, Kazuichiro Enbe, commanded two divisions and one mixed brigade of Reading Power, which were divided into three routes, namely the South Road, the Middle Road, and the North Road, from Anyi and Nanchang, and launched an attack on the Shanggao area, where the headquarters of the 19th Group Army was located, in an attempt to attack and destroy the main force of the 19th Group Army belonging to the 9th Theater.

The 19th Group Army of the Central [***] Squadron, which was stationed in the Shanggao area, had long been informed of the information about the battle of the Yue Army through various channels. In particular, Xiao Xiong's timely and complete operational plan of the 11th Army on its Poyang Lake campaign was of great help to Luo Zhuoying's theater command. Therefore, after clarifying the enemy's operational intentions, the Ninth Theater Command made a major strategic adjustment to the enemy's military deployment in a timely manner in light of the enemy's operational plan, and was ready to strike the most severe blow at any time.

In accordance with the deployment of the campaign battle plan, the Ninth Theater set up three lines of defense in the Northwest Jiangxi Theater. The first line of defense was set up in the areas of Jing'an, Fengxin and Gao'an; The second line of defense is located on the first line of Taojia, Zhacun and Nanling; The third line of defense is set up on the first line of Shangfu, Tangpu, Guanqiao, Sixi and Shijie.

Luo Zhuoying commanded the troops of the 19th Group Army, preparing to use the first and second lines of defense as feigned resistance, luring the enemy deeper, and after the devils entered the third line of defense, they would concentrate superior forces to encircle the enemy and annihilate it.

Luo Zhuoying, commander-in-chief of the 19th Group Army, was the commander-in-chief of the campaign, and in the preparation stage of the campaign, he concentrated a total of about 95,000 troops, including the 19th Group Army and other troops, and about 70,000 troops could actually be put into battle. Nearly 70,000 troops were also involved in the attack.

In addition, in order to slow down the pace of the enemy's offensive and disrupt the rhythm of its attack. The Theater Commander's Department ordered all guerrilla units fighting behind enemy lines in northwestern Jiangxi to actively carry out combat operations, try by all means to disrupt the enemy's rear, sabotage the supply of strategic materials, minimize the pressure of the Japanese army on our troops who are resisting the enemy head-on, and cooperate with our army's combat operations.

At 3 o'clock in the morning on March 15, 1941, the so-called "Poyang Lake Sweeping Battle" of the Chinese army began. Under the leadership of the commander of the 33rd Division of Sakurai Province, the North Road Army fired the first shot of the entire campaign.

The main force of the 33rd Division launched an attack from the direction of Fengxin Ganju towards Fengxincheng to the south. Under the cover of aircraft, they concentrated their forces on a frantic attack and advanced.

The 70th Army fortified in the east and west of Fengxincheng, and relied on the north and south sides of the Luhe River to resist along the river heights. Under the heavy bombardment of Japanese planes and artillery, the troops who held on to Fengxin suffered heavy casualties. According to the predetermined plan, instead of putting up a longer and fiercer resistance, they voluntarily abandoned their positions and evacuated the county seat of Fengxin.

As a result, Yue Kou successfully crossed the Yan River at noon that day and captured Fengxin.

After the army captured Fengxin, it did not stop attacking, but forcibly crossed the Jinjiang River and continued to attack upward.

The 20th Mixed Brigade of the Southern Route Army, under the command of Brigade Commander Naozo Ikeda, also launched an attack on our troops from the north bank of the Gan River on March 15. They forced their way across the Geumgang twice during the night and attacked westward along the south bank of the Geumjin River from the area north of Dokseong.

However, the 107th Division of the 70th Army and the 51st Division of the 74th Army stationed in the area had long been ready for battle, and he stubbornly resisted the enemy's frantic attack in the preset position, stopped the enemy's advance, and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy, thwarting the enemy's attack.

On March 16, the 34th Division of the Central Route Army, under the leadership of division commander Ogashige, attacked along the north bank of the Jinjiang River in the direction of Gao'an, attempting to cooperate with the north and south roads to break through the defensive positions of the 70th Army of the defenders, and then gather forces from the 3rd Route to besiege the garrisoned 74th Army.

Although the 107th Division of the 70th Army resisted for a while in the face of the strong offensive of the Yue Army, it finally suffered heavy casualties under the fierce blows of the enemy's aircraft, tanks and artillery.

On March 18, the 34th Division invaded Gao'an and marched west to Longtuanwei, continuing its attack on Guanqiao, Sixi and other places.

On March 19, the 33rd Division of the North Road Army retreated to Anyi before and after occupying Fengxin and Village.

The 20th Brigade of the South Road Reading Force was stubbornly blocked by the [***] 49th Army in the area of Ducheng and Jinglou, and the main force was stopped at Gray Port, and the enemy forces on this road were forced to cross the river and go north to join the 34th Division.

On 19 March, with the development of the war situation, Luo Zhuoying, deputy commander of the 9th Theater and commander-in-chief of the 19th Group Army, made up his mind to make use of the preset positions to resist the enemy's attacks one after another, induce the Yue army to enter the Shanggao area, and mobilize the main force to encircle and annihilate it through the enemy.

He immediately ordered by telegram: "Strictly punish all armies to attack the enemy fiercely, and make sure that the enemy who penetrates deep into the north and south of the Jinhe River will be annihilated in the north and south areas of Gao'an." In order to enhance the attack force of Luo Zhuoying's group, the 9th Theater Commander's Department dispatched Wang Lingji's two divisions of the Sichuan Army, Chen Liangji and Fu Yi, to the south immediately.

At this time, in the entire theater of operations, all the troops were intimidated by the strict military discipline and knew that reinforcements were about to arrive, so their morale was greatly boosted, and they fought bravely to fight against Yue Kou first. In accordance with the instructions of the Theater Commander's Headquarters and the Military Headquarters of the 19th Group Army, the armies of all walks of life rushed to the Shanggao front line one after another, preparing to encircle and annihilate the 34th Division of the Yue Army, which had already attacked Shanggao.

Although the 34th Division of the Central Route Army itself was in a bad situation, they wanted to eat swan meat and tried in vain to find an opportunity to annihilate the main force of the 19th Group, so as to capture Shanggao Castle and make great achievements for their emperor.

On March 19, the 34th Division of the Devils was stopped by the 57th Division led by Yu Chengwan near Sixi on the east bank of Surabaya, and did not give up. On 20 March, they again adopted the tactic of cone-shaped penetration, concentrating more than 10 artillery pieces and more than 30 planes to bombard the port area of Silo on the west bank of Surabaya.

The enemy's frenzied attack destroyed all the positions, and the enemy took the opportunity to force the Surabaya River from Zhankou and Gangxi Luo respectively.

Liao Lingqi, commander of the 58th Division, personally led the troops, fought bravely, and desperately blocked the gap. On the second day of fierce fighting, a large enemy force attacked near Zhitangkan, and the position was finally broken through.

Liao Lingqi was forced to lead the remaining troops to move to the line of Baimao Mountain, Xinshuxia, and Caoshe at midnight on the 21st, and they connected with the positions of Panjiaqiao, Yuntou Mountain, and Leijiashan of the 57th Division of Yu Chengwan's Division, as well as the reserve positions of Shigong Bridge and Xiapo Bridge Xulou, so as to ensure the safety of Shanggaocheng. Subsequently, the main force of the 34th Division attacked the high forward position in a big way, and although it fought fiercely for a whole day with the support of aircraft, tanks and artillery, it never moved forward under the stubborn resistance of the [***] team.

Under the strict supervision of the Theater Commander's Department, all the troops participating in the battle bravely killed the enemy one by one, one after another, and dealt a great blow to Yue Kou.

The 74th Army, which had been completely equipped with American-style equipment, under the leadership of army commander Wang Yaowu, was even more powerful, and was determined to add a glorious stroke to the military history of the 74th Army in the battle. He inspired the officers and men of the whole army to fight desperately and kill more devils. In order to cut off the rear route of the 34th Division of the Yue Army, Wang Yaowu of the 21st said that Wang Yaowu ordered Li Tianxia, commander of the 51st Division, to lead the troops to clear the remnants of the enemy on the south bank of the Jinjiang River, and lead the troops to attack and advance to Gao'an.

On the night of the 21st, Naozo Ikeda led the 20th Brigade of the Yomito Mixed Brigade to assemble its headquarters and took the lead in launching an attack in the early morning of the 22nd. As soon as the forward troops of the 51st Division came out of Stone Street, they encountered the main force of the 20th Brigade of the Reading Force, which crossed the river from the north bank of the Jinjiang River, and they attacked through Lujiawei. The devils attacked Lazhu Mountain with one force, crossed the Jinjiang River from the south of Xihujia in Shijie Street, copied the flank of the 51st Division, and bombarded the position of the 51st Division from north to south with 9 planes and 4 cannons.

Under the indiscriminate bombardment of the Japanese army, the 51st Division could not resist the enemy's attack and was forced to retreat to the high ground southwest of Stone Street. After receiving this unfavorable news, Wang Yaowu immediately changed his battle plan, he ordered Li Tianxia to lead the main force of his 51st Division to move to the left, and ordered the field supplementary regiment directly under the 74th Army deployed near Yintang to immediately rush to the Huayang area to block the 20th Brigade of the devil to attack westward.

At a speed of 15 miles per hour, the field supplementary regiment of the 74th Army seized Huayang and its unnamed heights northeast at about 7 o'clock, ignoring the frantic strafing of enemy planes in the sky and the interception of troops on the ground.

Before the enemy's large forces arrived at the position at about 9 o'clock, they used more than 10 planes to frantically bomb the position of the field supplementary regiment in an attempt to cooperate with its ground troops to occupy Huayang.

The officers and men of the field supplementary regiment fought bloodily, repelled numerous enemy attacks, and kept their positions. He suffered heavy casualties, and the corpses of devil soldiers were lying in front of the position.

The 20th Brigade of the Reading Force Mixed Brigade could not capture Huayang for a long time, so it turned to Kuangjia with the main force, and joined more than 1,000 people from Baichetou to cross south along the river to Xiongfang, in a vain attempt to return to the left flank of our army and launch an attack on our position. The soldiers resisted to the death, and the devils saw that it was difficult to break through the positions of our army, so they released a large number of incendiary bombs and poison gas. The battle was fought unusually fiercely, but the enemy was never able to break through the positions of our troops.

With the continuous arrival of reinforcements from our army, the 20th Brigade of the Reading Force of the Chinese Army fell into a bad situation of being in the back of the water.

In the early morning of March 24, our army smashed the offensive of the 34th Division against Nie's family and Baimao Mountain.

In the morning, the 34th Division mixed more than 3,000 remnants of the 20th Brigade into the battle with the remnants of the 20th Brigade transferred from the south bank of the Jinjiang River, and the 3rd Flying Regiment of the Yue Army also dispatched more than 70 planes to assist the Devil's ground troops in the attack. The enemy dropped more than 1,700 bombs, and most of the positions of our 51st Division were destroyed. The enemy twice took the opportunity to break into our forward positions, but they were both repulsed, and the two sides repeatedly fought hand-to-hand battles for positions, and the troops suffered heavy casualties, and finally their attacks were weak, and they were driven out of the downhill bridge by our troops.

By the 24th, the 34th Division of the Chinese Army had lost its skills and was in a desperate situation, and it was surrounded by the large force that we arrived later. Subsequently, according to the situation on the battlefield, Luo Zhuoying once again ordered all units of our army to continue to narrow the encirclement and launch an attack on the enemy's center.

On the evening of the 24th, our army had compressed the 34th Division of the devil in an encirclement of more than 10 miles from north to south and more than 30 miles from east to west.
