Chapter 11: A Surprising History (2)
Yuan Shao and Lu Bu attacked Zhang Yan together, and there is not much difference between the records of the "Three Kingdoms" and the "Book of the Later Han", but the record of the "Book of the Later Han" is more detailed: "Yan Jing has more than 10,000 soldiers and thousands of horses. Bu Chang Yuliang horse, called Chi Su (pronounced "Tu"), can gallop the city to fly the trench, and its athletes Cheng Lian, Wei Yue and other dozens of horses galloped through the Yan array, one day or to three or four, all beheaded. After more than ten days of fighting, the Yan army was broken. However, the record of "Zizhi Tongjian" is different: "Yan Jing soldiers are tens of thousands, riding thousands of horses. Shao and Lu Bu attacked Yan together, and fought for more than ten days, although the Yan soldiers suffered many casualties, the Shao army was also tired, so they retreated. ”
The difference between the two accounts is mainly a question of strength and results. The first two both said that Zhang Yan had more than 10,000 elite soldiers, and Lu Bu and his generals charged into battle, fighting for more than ten days, and then broke the Yan army. The latter said that Zhang Yan had tens of thousands of elite soldiers, and although the Yan army suffered many casualties, the Shao army was also tired, so they retreated. I think some people will be very confused about these two results, thinking that the two accounts are contradictory. In fact, this is not contradictory, because the first two are talking about the details, and the latter are talking about the overall situation, of course, it is not excluded that the first two are suspected of concealing the real data.
It is said in the history books that the Montenegrin army claims to have millions of people, which is a bit exaggerated, but there are tens of thousands of elite soldiers, but it is still more in line with the real situation. The so-called elite soldiers actually refer to well-armed and well-equipped troops. Although Yuan Shao and Lü Bu defeated Zhang Yan and the four battalions of the Xiongnu to slaughter the soldiers and horses of various tribes, due to several major battles in the past few days, the troops themselves were also very tired, and the terrain of Changshan was relatively complex, easy to defend and difficult to attack, so Yuan Shao did not continue to pursue, but ordered a retreat to rest. And such an explanation is more reasonable.
Because Lu Bu fought bravely and made a lot of contributions to Yuan Shao, it is recorded in "Cao Concealment Biography" that people at that time still passed on the proverb "There is Lu Bu among the people, and there is a red rabbit among the horses". In this regard, Lu Bu will inevitably be suspected of being a "master of high merit", and it is not surprising that he will be suspicious of Yuan Shao. After all, Lu Bu's purpose was to welcome the Han Emperor to return to Luoyang, while Yuan Shao's purpose was to establish himself as a hegemon, and the intentions of the two were completely conflicting.
However, the accounts of the two editions of the canonical history are quite different from each other. "Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms" said: "And seek the benefit of the soldiers (pronounced "west", soldiers are troops), the soldiers plundered, and the troubles were taboo." Bu felt his intention and went from Shao. The Book of the Later Han Dynasty said: "Bu not only relied on his merits, but also invited troops to Shao, Shao did not allow it, and the soldiers were more tyrannical and troubled." Bu is not at ease, because he wants to return Luoyang. ”
The difference between the two versions of the narrative is that the former says that Lü Bu caused Yuan Shao's displeasure because he indulged his soldiers in plundering the people, and Lü Bu felt uneasy and asked Yuan Shao to leave; The latter said that Lü Bu asked Yuan Shao to allocate some soldiers and horses to him, but Yuan Shao refused, and Lü Bu's soldiers were therefore arrogant and unreasonable, which made Yuan Shao feel dissatisfied, and Lü Bu felt uneasy, so he said that he wanted to go back to Luoyang.
In fact, in the "Heroes" that originally recorded this history, there is another record: "Lu Buyi Yuan Shao, Shao Bu Bu." Buqiu returned Luo, Shao fake Busi was under the lieutenant. The outside should be sent, and the inside wants to kill the cloth. ”
There are three records in "Heroes" about this incident that are not exactly the same, but none of them say that Lu Bu was because of the plundering of the army, which caused Yuan Shao's dissatisfaction. The Book of the Later Han Dynasty and the Zizhi Tongjian both adopted the narrative in the "Heroes". Lu Bu is praised by others, how can he plunder? Therefore, in "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", it is said that he plundered the army, but it is just a slanderous statement.
In fact, no matter which version of the narrative is written, the reasons for this seem a bit far-fetched. A person like Lu Bu, who is both strong in martial arts, good at fighting, and praised by the world, will either be trusted and relied on, or will be suspicious and fearful. The result will only be two, and there will never be a third possibility.
Lu Bu couldn't ask Yuan Shao for troops, and found that Yuan Shao was suspicious of him, so he wisely chose to leave. However, Yuan Shao was not at ease with him, so he sent thirty-six strong warriors in armor to send Lü Bu and told them to secretly get rid of Lü Bu. After Lu Bu found out about this matter, he asked people to pretend to be playing a kite in the tent, and then quietly slipped away. In the middle of the night, the warriors attacked Lü Bu's tent, slashed down the tent and bed, and then went back to report to Yuan Shaoyu that Lü Bu was dead. The next day, Yuan Shao learned that Lü Bu was still alive and immediately ordered the city gates to be closed. Who knows, at this time, Lu Bu had already led his subordinates to leave. Yuan Shao was worried that Lu Bu would become a disaster when he grew stronger in the future, so he ordered his subordinates to hurry up and chase him. However, after everyone caught up with Lu Bu, they were all terrified of him, and no one dared to approach him. Then, Lu Bu led the crowd away.
Seeing the above historical materials, I think many Three Kingdoms fans who like Lu Bu should be excited. In fact, the reason why Luo Guanzhong described Lu Bu as so powerful and brave was mainly based on two reasons: first, Lu Bu could defeat Zhang Yan's more than 10,000 elites with dozens of horses; Second, the sergeants under Yuan Shao pursued and killed Lu Bu, but they did not dare to approach.
The history books say that after Lü Bu left Yuan Shao, he once again attached himself to Zhang Yang. Some historians believe that this is untrue. In fact, after Lu Bu left Yuan Shao, he went directly to Chen Liu's Taishou Zhang Miao, instead of just passing through Chen Liu.
Zhang Miao is quite loyal and has always been more righteous. When Cao Cao was in the east to conquer Tao Qian, he once told his family that if he failed to return alive, they could go to Zhang Miao. Lu Bu thought that he had also heard of Zhang Miao's reputation, so he wanted to try his luck there. Unexpectedly, Zhang Miao was indeed loyal, so he decided to help Lu Bu. Therefore, the two would later shake hands and swear an oath. Later, Yuan Shao learned about this, and he was quite worried, so he instructed Cao Cao to kill Zhang Miao. In this regard, Cao Cao refused, saying: "Meng Zhuo, relatives and friends, right and wrong should be tolerated." Today's decision is undecided, so why is it in danger? ”
Lu Bu came to Zhang Miao, and he was very happy to come to Cao Cao. In terms of official rank, Zhang Miao belongs to Cao Cao's subordinates, and Lu Bu's defection to Zhang Miao is equivalent to defecting to Cao Cao. If Lu Bu and his subordinates can help, how can Cao Cao be unhappy?
"Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms" also said: "The edict of the Great Seal was issued, and the cloth was used as the Yingchuan Taishou." "I don't know if there is such a thing, if there is, then "Zizhi Tongjian" should be included, probably Sima Guang doesn't think there is such a thing. In this case, why did Chen Shou write like this? I can't speculate about this for a while.
Subsequently, Cao Cao asked Taishan Taishou Yingshao to pick up his father Cao Song to come to Yanzhou, but he was attacked by one of Tao Qian's generals at the junction of Hua County and Fei County, and Cao Song and his youngest son Cao De were killed. In the autumn, Cao Cao sent troops to attack Tao Qian, Lianke more than ten cities, and when he attacked Pengcheng, he fought with Tao Qian's headquarters, Tao Qian was defeated and fled to Tanxian to hold on.
It can be seen from the information that the combat effectiveness of Cao Cao's troops is also relatively strong, and they can conquer more than ten cities in a row, and Tao Qian gave up Pengcheng and ran to Tanxian to defend it. Of course, it is not ruled out that Lu Bu and others will also help Cao Cao's troops in the war.
Later, Cao Cao besieged Tan County, so he made a detour to capture the three counties of Xianxian, Suiling and Xiaqiu, and slaughtered them in the past, the chickens and dogs were not left, and the city was deserted and there were no pedestrians to pass by. It is said that with Cao Cao's style of acting, he should not do such a thing. Some people think that it was not Cao Cao's original intention, but the actions of the Qingzhou soldiers under him, but Cao Cao couldn't restrain them. I can't figure out this kind of overly obscure thing, and even Chen Shou said in "Three Kingdoms" that "there are too many slaughters", and I can't fake it.
Speaking of which, by the way, the 300,000 Yellow Turbans in Qingzhou wanted to join the Montenegrin Army, but they were broken by Gongsun Zan twice, and tens of thousands of people were beheaded and captured. Later, when he attacked Yanzhou, it actually increased to one million people, and I don't know how such a huge number of people gathered. Come to think of it, maybe the power of faith is endless.
