Chapter Ninety-Six: Top Gun (1)

Compared with the bulky biplanes of the early days, the monoplane has a slight lack of lift efficiency, but it is superior in both flexibility and flight stability. Thanks to the unexpected breakthroughs made by the Republic in the field of diesel engines, the performance of various types of monoplanes, which used to have insufficient lift due to low engine power, has gradually matured.

In addition to LG1897-J and FT1897-F, which can be operated by a single person, several aviation companies have also developed and manufactured a variety of monoplane propeller engine aircraft for different purposes, the most representative of which are FR1897-B, RK1897-E, RK1898-F, these three types of monoplane transport aircraft.

It is worth mentioning that, in addition to the latter two types are still products developed by Avalanche Aviation, the first FR1897-B monoplane propeller transport aircraft for the first time uses a gasoline engine engine developed and produced by a private capital company, which is the only similar aircraft product in the field of non-military aircraft that can be compared with Avalanche aircraft, and the founder of this airline is Feng Ru, the first person in the East in history. It is not surprising that a historical celebrity has this talent, but to Chen Zeyu's surprise, this Feng Ru at this time was just 17 years old!

And when he founded his own Fengru engine and aircraft manufacturing company, the aircraft designer had just passed his 16th birthday!

After a cordial meeting and conversation, Chen Zeyu finally figured out the young man's past, and the young head of the republic was stunned to find that it was he who had changed Feng Ru's experience. According to the original history, Feng Ru was forced by his family to immigrate to the United States after the First Sino-Japanese War between the Qing Dynasty and Japan, where he gradually came into contact with flying machines and eventually embarked on the road of aircraft development. However, due to the influence of Chen Zeyu, a modern man, the emerging development of Nanyang in the early years inevitably aroused the interest of many coastal people on the mainland, including the Feng Ru family who lived in Enping, Guangdong.

As early as Guangxu 21 years, that is, in 1892 AD, the young Feng Ru came to Luzon in Nanyang with his parents' family, at first a family of three was to help in a farm in Manila, and later introduced by the villagers, the family came to the east of Sizhejiang, Feng Ru father and son were both accepted by a small local shipyard and started as apprentice workers, to the end of 1893 Feng Ru himself was because of the local technical school successively passed the grade test of the junior and intermediate technicians and became the chief marine repair technician of the shipyard. The young Feng Ru did not stop there, and the hard-working young technician continued to work and study part-time, and mastered English and a large amount of Western mechanical knowledge through technical school courses and self-study.

Originally, if this situation continued, this Feng Ru might have become a top ship engineer technician. But the development of history once again played a "joke" on him.

One day in the early summer of 1895, the port city of eastern Luzon, Sizhejiang, appeared in the sky for the first time in human history! The Avalanche company's just-successful "Tailwinder" biplane propeller aircraft instantly shocked people all over the world, including Feng Ru, a young marine engineer. Perhaps it was the arrangement of the goddess of fate, Feng Ru, who already had aviation factors in his blood, still embarked on the life path of aircraft development after that.

Because of the solid foundation of turbine technology laid in the shipyard earlier, Feng Ru is far more familiar with power machinery than he was in another time and space. Since this year, Feng Ru has mastered a large amount of technical knowledge of internal combustion engines through dismantling, decoration and other means, and thanks to his own hard work, Feng Ru got the first pot of gold yuan in his life soon after.

On March 17, 1896, because of the improved design of the ZP1894-2S gasoline engine in the early years of Avalanche, the young Feng Ru obtained two engine inventions for the invention of cylinders and transmissions at the Seris Patent Office. At that time, although the Avalanche Power Group had shifted its research focus to the field of diesel engines, Xu Zhenpeng, the company's chief engineer, still instructed the relevant parties to buy the permanent right to use these gasoline engine patents, at a total cost of 26,000 Chinese yuan.

Perhaps in the eyes of the Avalanche company, this cost is just a drop in the bucket, but put it on Feng Ru at that time has become the future key to support this young man's dream of flying.

In the face of this astonishing wealth, Feng Ru not only used part of it to help his parents buy a manor in Nanyang and improve the life of his family, but most of the rest was invested by this young technician in the research and development of gasoline engines and flying machines.

On May 5, 1896, the biplane "Feng Ru No. 1" designed by Feng Ru himself successfully flew outside his estate, and the whole aircraft stayed in the air for more than 45 minutes, causing a sensation in the local city of San Fernando!

From June to September, several new types of aircraft, such as "Fengru No. 2", "Feng Ru No. 3" and "Feng Ru No. 5", which had been improved by Feng Ru himself, were also successfully test-flown one after another. Despite this, Feng Ru was still frustrated after comparing the successful aircraft tested at the same time as the avalanche, and fell into an emotional depression for a considerable period of time.

What Feng Ru didn't know was that with the cooperation of a large number of technical elites within the Avalanche Power Group, there was no shortage of "Chen's creativity" in these Avalanche aircraft series, which had already embarked on the road of modular and systematic aviation equipment development. Coupled with the world's leading airframe structure design and equipment configuration, Avalanche's competitiveness has not been challenged by others from the beginning.

After a period of adjustment, Feng Ru once again devoted his energy to the development and improvement of gasoline engines.

On October 9, 1896, with the newly developed FQ-3 90-horsepower four-cylinder four-stroke gasoline engine based on the Avalanche series of gasoline engines, Feng Ru finally won another victory in the field of gasoline engines. Funnily enough, this time it was still the previous Avalanche Power Group that bought the design patent rights from him.

Just two weeks later, the first batch of 500 Centrino cars in the gasoline-engined version, equipped with the FQ-3 engine, rolled off the production line of Avalanche Automobile Company in the city of Ceris in Nanyang.

Because the cost of engine configuration is much lower than that of the previous 96XBD series version of the sedan, the ordinary price of this FQ-3 Centrino sedan is only 1750 Chinese yuan, which is only equivalent to 2/3 of the former's domestic price. In terms of performance, compared with the 120 horsepower 96XBD diesel engine equipped with the old Centrino, this FQ-3 version of the Centrino sedan is slightly inferior in the upper axle climbing and starting acceleration stages, and the difference between the two is almost not felt when driving on ordinary flat roads. In addition, the new gasoline version of the Centrino is also not inferior to the former in terms of use consumption, although in terms of engine fuel consumption, the fuel consumption of the new FQ-3 Centrino sedan is still higher than the diesel version of the Centrino car 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers, and the refueling is more frequent in normal times, but because of the refining process of the oil industry itself, the price of gasoline in this era is still lower than that of diesel fuel, and the 7.9 liters of the FQ-3 type is not much different from the usual cost of the former 96XBD type 6.6 liters. Coupled with the huge price advantage of the FQ-3 Centrino, since the launch of this gasoline-engine version of the sedan, there has been a surging rush of buying in the entire Republic of Seris.

While seeing that the partner Avalanche Automobile Company began to "make a lot of money", Feng Ru, who came back to his senses, couldn't help but pat his head and scolded himself for being stupid.

In November 1896, inspired Feng Ru obtained a loan from a local bank in San Fernando, Luzon Province, and soon established his own gasoline engine manufacturer, Feng Ru Gasoline Engine Company.

The performance is not as good as the Avalanche aircraft, but it can be sold together, and the low engine cost will doom the future Feng Ru company to occupy a place in the world aviation industry.

Since November 7, after Feng Ru's planning, the gasoline engine company under his name has officially entered the field of aircraft production, and from that day on, it began to provide gasoline engine versions of aviation aircraft to various domestic flying clubs and aircraft enthusiasts.

Feng Ru's first project was a "Sightseer" biplane propeller aircraft equipped with an FQ-3 gasoline modified engine.

Although in terms of performance, because of the limitation of the engine 90 horsepower, the maximum flight speed of this "Sightseer" is only 135 km / h, but compared with several civil aircraft that Avalanche Aviation has rolled off the assembly line before, there is no doubt that the cost of Feng Ru's aircraft is more than one, only 1550 Chinese yuan, and the price is even lower than the price of a Centrino sedan.

In addition, this "Sightseer" civil biplane also uses a number of designs of previous avalanche aviation aircraft for the first time, except for the lack of an enclosed tempered glass cockpit and radio, the rest of the flight instruments and control equipment on the aircraft are readily available. And because the aircraft adopts a biplane body design, although it is inferior to the monoplane of the same period in terms of flexibility, there is no doubt that the strong lift rate of the aircraft also reduces the burden on the engine, making the fuel consumption of the whole aircraft much better than the former. Considering the low price before, I have to say that the cost-effective advantage of the "Sightseer" is very prominent. Therefore, since the birth of this aircraft, it has aroused the interest of many domestic flight enthusiasts, and they have paid for orders.

By the end of that year, the newly-born Fengru gasoline engine company had sold a total of 137 "Sightseer" aircraft, and the company's various research and development processes were also on track.

It was also at this time that the Republic of China simultaneously introduced various preferential subsidy policies for the development of the aviation industry, and set up the country's first aviation industry R&D and manufacturing base in Jinan New Area, Shandong Province.

In this way, in the early spring of 1897, as if he had been called, the young aircraft designer Feng Ru came to the north with more than a dozen workers and three newly developed gasoline engines.

Just six months later, a slightly different FR1897-B medium monoplane, largely modeled after the Avalanche Aviation Group's earlier aircraft, rolled off the assembly line at the newly established Fengru Engine and Aircraft Manufacturing Company in Jinan.

FR1897-B Light Monoplane, Technical Statistics -

Wingspan: 12.55 meters, Length: 9.16 meters, Height: 3.35 meters;

Empty weight of aircraft fuselage: 930 kg;

Maximum take-off weight: 1660 kg;

Maximum flight speed: 195 km / h;

Cruising flight speed: 150 km / h;

Practical ceiling: 4200 meters;

Maximum range: 800 km;

Fuselage structure: single-wing wooden structure;

Powertrain: 260 hp with a 96FG gasoline engine in the nose of the engine powered by a propeller engine;

On-board carry: The aircraft consists of 2 driver's seats and a cargo load of 250 kg;

Onboard weapons: none;

Other equipment: installation of an airborne radio;

In terms of overall interior design, this FR1897-B aircraft of Feng Ru Company is very similar to the early RK1896-A of Avalanche Aviation. In terms of internal equipment, except for the slightly outdated semi-enclosed cockpit, the rest of the instrumentation equipment has completely caught up with the similar products of the avalanche, of course, the biggest difference is that the aircraft has been replaced with a gasoline engine with excellent performance.

260 horsepower, which is currently the largest power aviation gasoline engine that can be achieved in China, this superior performance 96FG engine is also really poured into Feng Ru's efforts.

When the aircraft is flying at high altitude, because the air becomes thinner and the air pressure begins to decrease, the gasoline in the body is inevitably in a low pressure state, under normal circumstances, the gasoline in the fuel tank and oil circuit system will be close to the boiling state, and the volatilization of the gasoline in the plane will gradually accelerate when it will produce a lot of oil vapor, thereby blocking the oil path and causing "gas lock". At this time, the aircraft engine will stop in the air due to the lack of fuel, resulting in a serious flight accident in which the plane is destroyed and people are killed. In addition, because the lubrication performance of gasoline fuel itself is also inferior to that of diesel, it will greatly shorten the normal service life of gasoline engines without changing the design or adding lubricants, so for Feng Ru, who pursues aviation career, the development of a new aviation gasoline engine is the first step he must take.

In the face of unprecedented technical difficulties, at this time, hard work and talent once again helped the young aircraft designer, after finding the right direction, Feng Ru through hundreds of tests finally succeeded in developing three different specifications, gasoline-fueled aviation power engine, and the 96FG engine is the best of these works.
