Chapter 36: Forming an Army

(The transition is almost over, and I know a lot of people don't like these, but it's not okay not to write these things, otherwise readers will have doubts later!) οΌ‰

After a winter of rest, coupled with the fact that Huangzhuang has vigorously renovated water conservancy and started construction since the beginning of spring, more people gathered in Huangzhuang. Not only did all the redundant people in Xincheng County attract here, but even the landless displaced people from other counties in Henan County began to gather here.

And these people were all kept by Sima Shu for various reasons, and now the population under Sima Shu's personal control has exceeded 30,000, more than double that when he first came.

After counting the number of household registrations, Sima Shu obtained a total of 34,896 people, divided into 9,052 households (many households only had one or two young people left). Sima Shu divided the tenants in the Huangzhuang according to the number of households, and divided every 100 households into one tun, a total of 95 tuns.

Each tun has a left and right Sima, the left Sima is in charge of the organization and management of ordinary affairs such as farming and farming, and the right Sima is in charge of handling affairs such as public security, disputes, and later the military training of the tun people. Sima Shu is responsible for the tenant agriculture department of the prince's mansion, and the left and right Sima of the prince's mansion are concurrently served by Jiang Tong and Du Xi.

Sima Shu once ordered the young and strong people of each tun to be organized into several teams to dredge and repair the water conservancy projects such as canals and rivers next to the tundi. After a month of construction and hundreds of thousands of people, not only the original water conservancy canals in Huangzhuang were cleared.

Sima Shu still had time to lead the tenants to first divide the tuntian fields of each tun clearly, and then clean up the farmland to be cultivated in the spring according to some agricultural farming knowledge he had learned from the farmer. Clean up the stones, dig out the running water gullies, pile up grass, firewood and ashes, and put a layer of organic potassium fertilizer on the farmland.

Therefore, when spring comes, it is easy for the tenants of each tun to start spring ploughing. After finishing the crucial spring ploughing and starting work, Sima Shu threw the tedious things to Zu Ti and the others, and finally began to have time to do something he had wanted to do for a long time.

Spring is coming, and the spring ploughing that is very important in the year is about to begin. Since after a winter of running-in, the management organization of Huangzhuang has been perfected, and when it comes to major events related to the livelihood of the next year, why not care? Sima Shu divided the grain, farming tools, ploughing cattle, and horses into equal parts, and then divided each tun into several mutual aid groups, shared a small number of farm tools, ploughing cattle, integrated labor, and began to cultivate in the wasteland next to Yishui.

After finishing all this, Sima Shu was about to start recruiting soldiers, because Sima Shu said in the gold-lettered signboard and recruitment notice among the tenants: The soldiers not only have one pound and two taels of military rations every day, but also have two taels of silk a year, which was quite generous at that time.

However, Sima Shu had the confidence to do so, after all, this was a tenant farmer in his imperial estate, and he did not need to pay taxes to the imperial court, although Sima Shu hated this system very much, but it did not prevent him from profiting from it. Sima Shu estimated that after a year, the tax rate was enough to raise 1,000 elite soldiers in addition to self-sufficiency.

Sima Shu's principle of selecting soldiers is very strict, and he must select 1,000 people out of nearly 10,000 young people who have signed up, and the ratio is almost 1 in 10.

First of all, they looked at each other and discussed the country. All those who are depressed, sluggish, and full of laziness will be brushed down first, and only those who look energetic, have a straight back, and have a good evaluation in the tunli can make this first level.

Next is the simple test. First of all, the stone lock is lifted, and a 100-pound stone lock must be lifted ten times in a row. The second is to draw a strong bow, a strong bow of one stone must be able to pull it to the fullest, and finally line up in a pillar of incense to run two miles, and everything that cannot pass any one is brushed down.

After such screening, only more than 4,600 people were qualified, and the rest were sent back to participate in spring ploughing. But Sima Shu knew in his heart that these more than 4,000 people would still be brushed down, after all, Sima Shu only planned to recruit 1,000 people.

The next step is to start programming training. Sima Shu took 10 people as a team, three teams plus flag-bearers, trumpeters counted more than 100 people as a tun, Santun plus flag-bearers, more than 300 trumpeters as a battalion, three battalions and flag guards, etc., totaling more than 1,000 people as a capital, and the three capitals set up a military service, secretary, military law, joint logistics baggage, detailed intelligence and other departments.

Sima Shu's original escort team of more than 200 people were all brought from Sima Ya and Xu Chao. After following Sima Shu for more than half a year, after several trainings, he has already become an elite division.

Sima Shu ordered more than 100 elite people to be sent down to each of them as instructors. Then, he wrote a training textbook for recruits and standardized the subjects for each recruit.

Every morning, after blowing the trumpet, getting up and washing, immediately assemble, first line up in the field, run for an hour, and then have breakfast. Then, in the morning, I walked in a queue again, divided into about noon, lunch, and rested for an hour. In the afternoon, it is another hour of running in the field, and then crossing for individual physical training and queue walking training. You have dinner at three o'clock, and then gather together to listen to the clerk tell the story (the cold one) and talk about things. I slept with a trumpet at all times.

After two months of recruit training, after 4,600 people have eliminated a group of people, the rest will be assessed for queue marching, individual soldier physical fitness, and field long-distance running.

The daily subject is to blow the trumpet in the morning, get up and run in the field. In the morning, they learn how to use shields, spears, and knives made of wooden strips that are more than twice as heavy as real people, and the targets of assassination are puppets that look like real people. This kind of technical assassination action is summarized by those skilled fighters, written in line with the principle of efficiency and usefulness, and is not comparable to ordinary showmanship. In the afternoon, it is training basic skills for individual soldiers, such as jumping, running, crossing trenches, climbing over wooden walls, etc. In the middle, there will be mixed with mutual fighting, and the formation changes to move forward.

Sima Shu appointed Zu Ti as the commander of the first battalion and the commander of the first battalion, and Sima Ya and Xu Chao respectively served as the commanders of the other two battalions. At this time, whether it was the clansmen of Sima Ya and Xu Chao, or the clansmen brought by Zu Ti from the north, they were all disrupted and reorganized by Sima Shu. Coupled with the recruited locals, Sima Shu tried to avoid the expansion of clan power in the army.

In order to ensure that the future army can be ordered and prohibited, and that there will be no offenses in the autumn, Sima Shu formulated strict military laws. And he personally served as the supervisor of the army, in charge of military law and training.

In this military law, Sima Shu ingeniously put forward the rights, obligations, and responsibilities of soldiers. First, the rights of the military: I. Military personnel have the right to be treated and honoured as they deserve; Two. meritorious service must be rewarded, and there is the right to ask for promotion; Three. the right to take time off to rest; Four. The private property of servicemen is protected.

Then there are the obligations of the military: I. Serve one’s country with true allegiance; Two. defend against foreign aggression; Three. Defend the rights of the people. The third is the responsibility of military personnel: 1. consciously and unconditionally obey orders; Two. Dedicated service; Three. Truthfully report military information and maintain military secrets.

Not only did these things confuse the sergeants, but even the three powerful subordinates only understood part of it under Sima Shu's detailed explanation. But Sima Shu insisted on writing it in military law, believing that it would not be long before many people would understand the true meaning of these three paragraphs.

The next three orders and seventy-four bans will be clear to everyone. The three orders refer to the three serious crimes of violating the order, delaying the fighter plane, and retreating without a fight, and the chief officer has the right to admonish, dismiss, and behead his subordinates according to the severity of the three serious crimes committed. The 74 prohibitions cover a wide range of disciplines, such as marching discipline, garrison discipline, combat discipline, etc., and the provisions on the abduction and harassment of the people are very detailed, and the punishment is also extremely severe, and those who dig graves and burn houses, plunder assets, and damage people's property are punished with 20 lashes at the least, and hanging; ** Those who are hanged by women, and those who are annihilated, or who bring women into the camp, are whipped thirty times and removed from service; Those who torture prisoners, take meritorious service, and possess booty for private purposes are punished with different punishments, and those who kill people and take advantage of meritorious service are hanged; Other general offenses, such as untidy military posture, damage to armor, fighting, night bans, drunkenness and trouble, etc., are punished according to their severity.

Sima Shu divided punishment into three categories in military law, one is light punishment such as reprimand, dismissal, and dismissal; the second category is caning, from ten to forty; The third is the death penalty, which is hanged in peacetime and beheaded in wartime. The first and second categories are often punished together.

Sima Shu also implemented the law of joint sitting, and if one person made a mistake, he would be punished even for a long time; If the commander or non-commissioned officer or three of his subordinates make a mistake, the team will be punished consecutively, and if the team principal or the non-commissioned officer or ten people make a mistake, the commander will be punished consecutively, and so on. If there are deserters, half of the team will be confined, and the remaining half will be arrested, and the monthly salary will be removed. If someone makes a mistake and is exposed by a sergeant in the same place, there is no need to sit together, and if no one reveals it, they must be punished for all of them.

For the sergeant's ordinary mistakes, he demanded that the first offender and the second offender be reprimanded, withheld pay and other punishments, and the third offender was given a whipping sentence. Moreover, he also stipulated in the military law that except for the wartime officer, who has the right to deal with the three serious crimes and other war-related crimes on the spot, all other crimes of misconduct must be tried and adjudicated by the military justice department, and then the military law department will enforce it.

This military law was promulgated and formed from the establishment of the Prince's personal guard, and has been continuously improved since then.

Seeing more than 130 people standing straight in front of him in six rows, Sima Shu walked around in front of them, and then stood there and said loudly: "Do you know how to win a war? ”

"I don't know!" More than a hundred people shouted in unison. They are all used to it, and since they marched in line last month, they knew that the words of the chief must be answered whether they know it or not, and they must answer it neatly and loudly, otherwise the prince in front of you will make you shout loudly.

"It's very simple," Sima Shu was very satisfied with the answer of the crowd, because the voice was loud enough, "that is, we survived." But remember, it's never about running away and stealing life down. The enemy is dead, and you are still alive, and that is victory! ”

"How to survive on the battlefield? I tell you, that is, trust your companions and comrades-in-arms in front of you, in front of you, on your left and right, and give them your sides and backs with confidence, and you can only deal with the enemy in front of you. ”

"When it comes to the battlefield, the strength of one person is small, and if you want to win, you must rely on the strength of the whole shi, the whole team, the whole tun and even the whole battalion."

"You are all officers and non-commissioned officers, and your responsibilities are great, because the lives of your comrades and comrades are all in your hands, and if you make a mistake or incompetence, you can kill all your brothers."

Sima Shu said to all the officers and non-commissioned officers standing in front of him with a serious expression. Sima Shu stipulated that the commander and above were officers, and the rest such as the chief, the non-commissioned officer, the team officer, and the non-commissioned officer chief were all non-commissioned officers. He defined officers and non-commissioned officers as officers leading soldiers to victory, while non-commissioned officers assist officers in managing soldiers, and their main tasks include carrying flags, beating drums, giving orders, and boosting morale. In order to distinguish them, Sima Shu ordered the non-commissioned officer to draw a horizontal line on the sleeve of his right arm, the non-commissioned officer chief to add an extra X to the horizontal line, and the officer to add an extra three-dimensional star to the horizontal line.

Sima Shu knows the important surnames of officers and non-commissioned officers, if the general is the brain of the army, and the soldier is the body of the army, then the officer and non-commissioned officer are the bones that support this huge body. So he simply taught the sergeants to march in formation, and then began to train officers and non-commissioned officers in rotation.
